Prevention is the best medicine!

👉

There are simple tasks that done frequently can prevent disease.

Consistent maintenance is the secret to preserving everything, including health. And the wallet. It's better to spend less in prevention than to spend more in treatment.

Leashes are a tricky business

👉

None are wrong or right, but some have a few limitations.

Personally I prefer a longer, non-retractable leash, which I can manage perfectly well, even if the dog starts to pull from nothing.

Again, it's important to let dogs explore when walking them, and that's difficult with a shorter leash. Remember, walking and training are different.

Another cause might be pain

👉

Aggression is nothing more than a high intensity response to something that was bothering a dog. Or anyone for that matter. Obviously personality plays a role, at least in humans.

And that brings me to breeds. Not that it depends on personality, but some breeds were created for the sole purpose of being aggressive, despite of many individuals not showing it. Like doberman and rottweiler.

Another special considerarion is disease, or pain. In these cases, aggression is often sudden, and might be on simple manipulation, specially in the neck.

Helpful skill in needing moments

👉

Having your dog's undivided attention can be very important in stressful moments on walks.

And it's trainable like any other skill. Same as 'look'.

The goal here is to give them freedom to explore, but still being able to get their attention if something comes up.

What would you like them to fetch?

👉

Progressions and dividing one complex behavior in several smaller steps are the best ways to train most behaviors.

First, teaching not to chew, but to just hold the toy instead. This is trained by alternating toys, making them expect to drop the one they have.

Next, timing on that reward. The clicker can be of great assistance for timing.

Don't let them pull back when you ask for the toy. Grabbing them by the collar is fine. Dropping it is the hardest part

All relationships require maintenance

👉

And for dogs, who are social beings just like us, it's even more important.

So understand what they need or not, and like or not, and provide accordingly.

It varies from dog to dog, but in general, good physical and mental stimulation are important, as well as constant training (also known as education).

Did you know about escape behaviors?

👉

These behaviors show for fighting frustration or unease. When there is something they don't like, they might react. It's even worse if it works.

If they chew on the couch and you hit them, they might bite you. They don't learn to stop biting the couch and on top of that learn that biting will keep you away.

This is why we prefer to offer a replacement. Instead of chewing on the couch, they have their toy to chew on. And we make them like the toy more than the couch.

Plus, punishment only counts as punishment if it works. After two or three times, if it doesn't work, change strategy.

Bad experiences with you can cause damage to your bond, and punishments are bad experiences.

How is your training going? 👇

👉

There are several reasons a training can't be very productive.

First, schedule progressions and start with the easiest ones. When they get those, you can start leveling up a notch. Progression is key.

And I'm adding distractions to progressions as well. For the same exercise, increase surrounding stimuli, gradually. This counts as progression in the way that later they can do it anywhere, not just at home.

And rewards. If they aren't motivating, then a behavior is less likely to show. This varies greatly from dog to dog, but most go well with tasty treats.

Also, keep it short. This training can be highly demanding in terms of focus, so 3 or 4 minutes at a time can be enough.

It's important to differentiate both

👉

Training requires a lot of focus and energy from our dogs, so keeping it for too long, like any regular walk, isn't sustainable.

They start losing interest and excitement, and being around the same person for too long can make them not want to be so much with that person, thus not responding to the recall.

Names can be useful, if they get it

👉

It's like a come or look command, if you will, but it's more generalised.

So, it's better if they associate it with good stuff. I wouldn't go to someone calling me in an aggressive way, I'd probably even run away.
