ORIGIN OF DORPERS

🔹Dorper sheep breed was developed in South Africa in the early 1950s by Dorper sheep Breeders' Society of South Africa by a delegation of 60 farmers.
🔹A breed that would be hardy and very adaptive to any kind of climate was required so that it would thrive under very little feeds or tough conditions.
🔹Dorper is a portmanteau of the parents names i.e the Dor' part was coined from Dorset horned ram which was mated to a black headed Persian ewe where the 'Per was obtained hence Dor + Per = Dorper .
🔹The breed also had to conform to certain breed standards (Follow my page MethMethuselas Dorper BreederspMethuselas Dorper BreederseMethuselas Dorper Breedersknow about breed standards I will be posting about it in few days) Example: It must have a black head and sometimes the neck region,it must have a clean underbelly with no hair or fur while the top should be a mixture of hair and wool etc.
🔹One of the main advantages is its hardiness,a dorper ewe can raise a lamb from limited feed resources where other breeds can hardly survive.
🔹It also has a longer breeding season and are also very fertile where you can have atleast 3 lambing seasons in 2 years.
🔹They also grow very fast and can gain weight of between 150-450 grams per day per lamb. They usually reach slaughter weight as soon as 4-5 Months hence very profitable since lactation period is 3 months and hence you will have only fed it for 2 months if you sell it at 5 months.
🔹About the price well the say it is quite expensive but worth it imagine a lamb hitting over 50Kgs in 5 months.
🔹Getting a weaner ram from an established breeder is usually 30k+.
🔹Weaner Ewes 15k+.
🔹Pregnant ewes 25k+
🔹1year plus ewes 30k plus.
