Who can spot the fractures?

Pathologic fractures occur when a reptile has secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism, more commonly known as metabolic bone disease.

One of the main causes of this disease is inadequate husbandry and an insufficient diet.

Want to learn how to provide an adequate diet for not only lizards, but rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes, turtles and birds?

Our 1 hour Online learning ‘Appropriate Feeding of Exotic Species’ worth 1 CPD point is now available at www.exoticvetnursetraining.com for $19

Ps: who can tell me the species?

Bunny patients are very common but how many of you accurately measure their food to see what they have eaten or do you peer into the kennel and see if they have eaten anything?🐇🐇

Well it is important to measure the food as it may seem they have eaten but in fact they haven’t and just meerley had a nose in the bowl as you can see from the picture, it looks like the rabbit has eaten but when weighed none have been eaten.

This time of year we see more and more GI stasis bunnies due to the lack of fibre in the grass or due to more stressful events such as fireworks so it is important to see how much they are really eating.

Remember when feeding GI stasis rabbits or any rabbit inpatient:

✨Measure their pellets accurately and often enough i.e 2-4 times a day
✨Give a handful of hay at a time so it does not become soiled and easier to see whether they have eaten some.
✨Weigh or check vegetables/grass regularly to see if eaten or provide more fresh if wilted.
✨If you are lucky enough to have a choice of syringe diets, it is recommended to feed emeraid for 24 hours then switch to oxbow/supreme recovery diet with any rabbit that come in to the practice with anorexia.
✨Keeping their feeding station away from their bedding area so cannot soil it especially their hay
✨If a rabbit that is litter trained comes in provide a litter tray
✨Provide bottle and bowl for a choice
✨If you syringe feed then measure how much (as best you can) is being fed to the rabbit and how much they are actually eating of it
✨Decrease frequency of syringe feeds and the amount being given the more they eat on their own.

So don’t forget to measure the rabbits food next time you have a bunny inpatient 😁

Be confident with your exotics as always 💪
