Staggering statistics.

❗ RAGWORT WARNING ❗

With the hot weather set to stay with us for the foreseeable it is becoming even more important to be on the lookout for ragwort in your horse’s field.

Grazing is becoming increasingly sparse due to the lack of rain, potentially making ragwort more appealing to horses. When ragwort begins to dry out, it starts to lose its bitter taste but still remains toxic. Being more palatable, horses may seek it out when foraging and become more likely to eat parts of the plant.

Ragwort poisoning can accumulate over longer periods of time and have devastating effects. Be sure to regularly check your pasture and remove any ragwort to minimise the risk and help stop the cycle of growth.

🐄🐑🌞It's getting to that time of year when blue green algae and its danger to dogs and people hit the newspaper headlines but cattle and sheep can be killed by it too. They present as sudden deaths or animals with nervous signs.
Drinking from stagnant water is a big risk factor. This may be canals, slow moving river edges or ponds but remember to clean out dirty water troughs especially those in fields that have stood for several weeks and where now the cows are turned out onto the aftermath🐄🐑🌞

Some very good advice from BHS.

Also remember if you have to travel your horse in hot weather try to choose a cooler time of day.
Have plenty of water with you for you and your horse in the event of breakdown/road blocks.
Have a plan in place!

Timely reminder everyone!

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️

I know I’ve done a few posts on this but I keep seeing people posting about horses coming up short, uncomfortable or lame and they’re assuming it’s an injury but it’s more likely to be grass right now.

The grass in the UK is currently lethal and horses need to be managed very carefully if they’re on grass. The reason it is so deadly at the moment is the days are sunny, which activates photosynthesis and then the temperatures overnight drop to below 6 degrees which means the grass is storing the sugar rather than using it to grow. This is a trigger combination.

Until the temperatures overnight reach 6 degrees consistently we will stay in this cycle.

Think about adding salt and magnesium oxide (magox) to your horses’ feed to help counteract the effect of the grass.

Urgent Appeal – do you want to help Ukrainian horses and owners caught in the crisis created by Russian conflict? https://bit.ly/3sSslx1

We’re raising funds with British Equestrian, The British Horse Society and British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) with support from member bodies across the equestrian industry to provide emergency support for horses and their owners in Ukraine. We will be working initially with the Ukrainian and Polish Equestrian Federations who are best placed to provide immediate help to Ukrainian horses and owners right now, and we hope to add more local partners soon.

Please donate today to help Ukrainian horses receive much needed haylage, feed and bedding, as well as fund aid where it’s needed the most - https://bit.ly/3sSslx1

❗BE HORSE AWARE - Think twice before disposing of your Christmas veg❗

Although it may seem like a treat for horses, we urge members of the public not to dispose of any food waste in local horse fields. What may appear to be a harmless act of kindness could in fact cause:

• Extreme stomach problems, which can lead to severe illness and possible death
• Risks the horse choking
• Fighting between horses, potentially causing injury
• Potential injury to yourself if bitten

To help prevent these incidents occurring the BHS urges members of the public NOT to feed horses.

📣PLEASE SHARE this post so we can reach more people and help protect the welfare of everyone’s horses📣

With temperatures starting to drop, it can be really tempting to rug our horses to keep them cosy, especially when we feel cold ourselves. However, it is important to consider the natural processes highlighted below when rugging your horse or planning their winter management routine.
.
🐴Self-protection: horses naturally turn their backs on wind and rain and huddle close together with members of the herd.
.
🌳Natural shelter: seeking shelter from thick hedges and tree lines, or they may have access to a field shelter.
.
🔥Natural insulation: the hairs of the horse’s coat stand on end, trapping heat and creating a layer of insulating body heat.
.
🌾Forage: eating forage acts as an in-built heating system by creating heat as the fibre is broken down in the digestive system.
.
All horses are individuals and as a result their needs will vary. Some horses will cope absolutely fine without a rug as long as their essential needs are met, but others will definitely require this protective layer.
.

Even the most sensible of horses can be frightened by fireworks. The BHS has put together information to help your horse cope with local displays.

Great to see horses working. Anyone in the area definitely worth a visit. 😊
