Fuel for the frost! ❄️ Did you know that sled dogs burn 20–50% more calories in winter? Their nutrition is key to keeping them strong and ready for any challenge.

Winter brings unique nutritional challenges for working dogs like sled dogs. The cold temperatures and intense activity mean their bodies burn significantly more calories to maintain warmth and perform at their best. Here are the key tips to ensure your dog thrives all winter long:

1️⃣ Boost Calories: Increase their calorie intake by 20–50% to match their energy demands. High-quality fats (30–40% of total calories) are essential for long-lasting energy, while proteins (25–30%) support muscle recovery.
2️⃣ Serve Warm Meals: Cold weather can slow digestion. Slightly warmed meals, like wet food mixed with warm water or broth, are easier to digest and keep your dog comfortable.
3️⃣ Perfect Timing: Offer light, easily digestible meals 2–3 hours before activity. After exercise, feed a nutrient-dense meal within 30 minutes to replenish energy stores.
4️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Dogs drink less in the cold. Warm water or broth can encourage hydration and prevent dehydration.
5️⃣ Add Essential Nutrients: Omega-3s for joint health, zinc and vitamin E for skin and coat, and small amounts of salt to maintain electrolytes during long work sessions.

💡 Example Feeding Schedule for a Sled Dog:

👉Morning: 1/4 of daily portion with added fat, served warm.
👉Pre-Work Snack: A small high-fat treat (e.g., meat or fish).
👉Post-Work Meal: The largest portion of the day, mixed with warm water or broth.
👉Evening: The remaining daily portion, focusing on protein and fat.

With the right nutrition, your sled dog can stay strong, healthy, and ready for every challenge this winter. Monitor their weight, coat, and energy levels regularly to adjust their diet as needed!

Strong backs make powerful sled dogs! 🐾
Hill Pulls are an easy and effective way to build your dog’s back strength and overall stability. Ready to give it a try?

Did you know that a strong back is the foundation for a sled dog’s power and endurance? Hill Pulls are a simple yet highly effective exercise to strengthen your dog’s back muscles, hind legs, and core stability.

Here’s how to get started:
1️⃣ Choose the right hill: Find a gentle slope with soft ground like snow or dirt to protect your dog’s joints.
2️⃣ Optional weight: If your dog is experienced, attach a light weight (like a small tire or weighted sack) to their harness. Start with 5-10% of their body weight.
3️⃣ Warm-up: Take a 5-10 minute walk or jog to prepare your dog’s muscles.
4️⃣ The exercise: Guide your dog to pull the weight or just walk uphill, keeping the movement slow and controlled. Aim for 10-20 meters per repetition.
5️⃣ Cooldown: Finish with a relaxed walk to ease muscle tension.

💡 Pro tip: Start without extra weight if your dog is new to this exercise, and always keep it fun with lots of praise and rewards!

Why this works:
✔️ Strengthens back muscles and hind legs.
✔️ Improves core stability and balance.
✔️ Builds endurance for sledding and other activities.

Strong dogs need strong recovery days.

After a week filled with activity and adventure, it’s time to slow down and let your dog recover. Rest days are essential for muscle repair, injury prevention, and preparing for the week ahead. Recovery can include gentle walks, stretching, or even a soothing massage to help your dog relax and recharge.

As a dog fitness trainer, I always remind my clients: fitness isn’t just about pushing harder—it’s about knowing when to pause. Taking the time to rest benefits not just your dog’s body, but also their overall well-being.

An active dog is a happy dog—but only with the right kind of activity!

Balance is key when it comes to your dog’s fitness routine. Overtraining can lead to fatigue or injuries, while too little activity leaves your dog restless and under-stimulated. Finding the sweet spot ensures your dog stays healthy, energized, and engaged.

Incorporate a mix of activities, like strength-building exercises, short sprints, or mental challenges, to keep things interesting. For example, alternating between active days and lighter recovery days helps your dog build stamina and prevent burnout. As a professional dog fitness trainer, I’ve seen how variety and balance create the happiest, healthiest dogs.

Progress starts with small steps—and your dog is ready to take them with you.

Every journey begins with a single step, and building your dog’s fitness is no different. Whether it’s a short run, a new exercise, or simply adding variety to your routine, small, consistent actions lead to big results.

Dogs thrive when they’re challenged physically and mentally, and as their fitness improves, so does their confidence and overall well-being. This week, set a goal—no matter how small—and take the first step toward it. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress.

When people say, ‘Dogs just run because they’re told,’ they’ve never seen a sled dog in action.

My sled dogs teach me something new every day. They don’t just run because they have to—they run because they love it. Their excitement at the start line, their focus on the trail, and the way they work together as a team—it’s all pure instinct and passion.

I’ll never forget one winter climb that felt impossible. As we struggled through the snow, Pepper turned his head, as if to say, “We’ve got this.” And she was right.

These moments remind me that sledding isn’t just a sport—it’s about trust, teamwork, and resilience. What’s one lesson your dog has taught you recently?

It started with a reunion, turned into an adventure, and became a lifelong passion

Some moments stay with you forever. Sunshine’s first run with a big sled dog team was one of those moments. I had booked an adventure with Wildspirit, giving Sunshine the chance to reunite with her siblings and run alongside them in the same team. Watching her work as part of that team was mesmerizing—it sparked a passion I never knew I had.

That two-day journey was unforgettable. The connection, the teamwork, and the raw beauty of working with sled dogs changed everything for me. And at the end of it, I brought home Pepper, an 8-week-old ball of potential and energy.

Sunshine, you gave me this gift, and I miss you every single day. But your spirit runs with us, on every trail, in every moment.

Every journey begins with lifting the anchor. It’s the start of trust, teamwork, and trailblazing moments.

This is the moment where everything starts—the anchor lifted, the dogs ready, and the trail ahead full of possibilities. The anchor symbolizes the start of every adventure and the confidence to let go and trust your dogs. What does the start of an adventure mean to you?

Winter training is magical, but only when done right! ❄️
Let’s talk about the key mistakes you can avoid to keep your dog safe and strong this season.

Winter training is more than just snow and adventure—it’s about preparation and making smart choices. Let’s talk about three common mistakes that can turn a great session into a stressful one:

❌ Overdoing it in deep snow: Snow adds resistance, making every step harder. Start slow and monitor your dog’s energy levels to prevent exhaustion or injury.

❌ Ignoring hidden dangers: Snow can hide rocks, ice, or branches that might cause harm. Stick to trails you know or scout carefully before your run.

❌ Forgetting recovery time: Cold weather impacts recovery. Schedule regular breaks, provide hydration, and bring something warm for your dog to rest on.

When you address these challenges, winter training becomes a safe and enjoyable experience for you and your dog. 🌟

❓Have you faced any of these issues?
❗️Let’s discuss your best winter training tips in the comments!

Boost your sled dog’s strength, endurance, and resilience! Here’s how to take their performance to the next level. 🛷💪

Sled dogs are natural athletes, but even they can benefit from a tailored training boost. Adding focused workouts to their regular routine can improve strength, endurance, and resistance to fatigue. Here are three effective exercises to elevate your sled dog’s performance:

➡️ Hill Sprints: Short, powerful sprints uphill build explosive strength in the hind legs and core. Start with 3-5 sprints over a moderate incline and gradually increase as your dog adapts.

➡️ Interval Pull Workouts: Alternate between short, high-resistance pulls (20-30 seconds) and longer, moderate-resistance pulls (2-3 minutes). This trains both power and stamina, making your dog more efficient in varied conditions.

➡️ Weighted Pulls: Incorporate light resistance (like a small sled or tire) over controlled distances. This strengthens key muscle groups for sledding while improving pulling technique.

💡 Expert Tips for Safe and Effective Training:

1️⃣ Warm-Up & Cool Down: Always begin with a light jog to warm up muscles and joints. End sessions with a cooldown, including light stretches or massage, to support recovery.

2️⃣ Monitor Your Dog: Watch for signs of fatigue, discomfort, or altered gait. Adjust intensity or take breaks as needed.

3️⃣ Include Mobility Exercises: Stretching and flexibility exercises keep your dog’s muscles supple, preventing stiffness and injuries from repetitive motion.

Adding these workouts to your sled dog’s regular training creates a true performance edge. Strength, endurance, and resilience don’t just happen—they’re built step by step, sprint by sprint.

From nervous beginnings to thrilling rides – my first Dogsledding adventure changed everything. 🛷❄️

I’ll always cherish the memory of my very first dog sledding adventure. It was 2020, and it was just me, Pepper, and Sunshine—my two incredible Alaskan Huskies, full of energy and spirit.

We were new to it all, learning the commands, figuring out the rhythm, and trusting each other on the snowy trails. I remember the thrill of that first glide across the snow, the sound of the sled runners, and the sight of Pepper and Sunshine working as a perfect team. They were unstoppable, and their determination inspired me to give my all.

Sadly, Sunshine is no longer with us—she left us in 2023. But her spirit remains a part of every adventure we take. Her memory reminds me of how much joy and connection dog sledding brings, not just to us but to the dogs who thrive on it.

Dog sledding isn’t just a sport; it’s a bond, a journey, and a shared passion. Starting this journey in 2020 changed my perspective and strengthened my relationship with my dogs. I’ll always be grateful to Pepper and Sunshine for starting me on this path.

Have you ever tried dog sledding? If not, is it something you’d love to experience? Let me know in the comments! 🐾🛷
