Oddball Fishes Oddball Fishes An aquarium blog for aquarists, by aquarists based in Singapore. Happy to answer any questions that you may have about our pets! order of 3pc).

Featuring some of our more interactive, predatory or simply oddball water pets in our collection. We typically post new content on our Instagram page, so do check it out: . We are also the authorized exclusive reseller of American Aquarium Products (AAP) Wonder Shells (Regular and Medicated versions). These are the best way to replicate the continuous change of water in nature, which

replenishes essential minerals, cations and electrolytes not found in aquariums that are closed systems. If you find your pet fish lethargic, hiding, or with a loss of appetite or colour, try Wonder Shells and notice the difference. We use the Regular Wonder Shells ourselves in all our tanks, and the results speak for themselves. Absolutely essential for all livebearers (guppies, mollies etc.), pufferfish, goldfish, African cichlids, Flowerhorn, rays, crayfish, shrimp, snails, turtles, brackish tanks and lobsters. Also maintains GH required for healthy plants in tanks. The Medicated Wonder Shells are a synergistic proprietary blend unique to AAP for treatment and prevention of the most common fish ailments (white spot, velvet, fungus, etc.), with all the added benefits of the Regular Wonder Shell. [**Note: the Medicated version is not recommended for shrimps, crayfish, snails and heavily planted tanks.]

Each Wonder Shell treats up to 350L, and Medicated Wonder Shell treats up to 150L. Simply break into smaller pieces for smaller tanks as needed. They will slowly dissolve in your tank, releasing all the essential minerals in a gradual, controlled manner (unlike when dosing liquids to your tank). Does not affect PH. Regular Wonder Shell: $11.50 each
Medicated Wonder Shell: $14.90 each

American Aquarium Products (AAP) Wondershell is absolutely essential if you intend to keep your more exotic, wild caught fish healthy and feeding well in captivity over a long time.

The payara family are notorious for deteriorating over time in the tank, due to the pristine and fast flowing waters from their natural habitat in the Amazon. Once they are stressed, they stop feeding and will starve to death (especially scomberoides and tatauaia spp.) keeping them in a tank beyond a year can therefore be challenging.

AAP’s Wondershell replenishes cations not found in tap water, and simulates the electrical charges created from fast flowing water over rocks in the wild. There is no other way to replicate this requirement in a fish tank.

More here: https://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/MedicatedWonderShell.html

Our own RTP (Hydrolycus tatauaia) slows its feeding whenever Wondershell is due for top up, and will adopt the diagonal position. This changes the moment Wondershell is replenished (in the same tank >2 years).

Your expensive fish are definitely worth this small investment, if you want them healthy and to be with you for a long time. Order directly via our Lazada page, FishyHub, or Carousell for ready stock and local delivery:

Red phoenix tropheus now in season. Apparently slow growing and harder to breed - we don’t see them too often. Very curious and greedy in the tank though 😆

Gulpie our gulper catfish - he’s been with us for about 2.5 years now, and is actually now probably the largest gulper we’ve seen (pushing 12 inches).

Would probably swallow a peacock bass now, at his size…

New Year, New Beginnings

The Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) pair have spawned, less than 3 weeks after being introduced to their new home. Fry are healthy and growing fast - the larger ones already approaching 1cm as of today.

Adding fragments of American Aquarium Products Wonder Shell sure works wonders in stimulating breeding, and makes for strong growth of the brood.

Wishing one and all a very prosperous Lunar New Year 🧧 - 年年有鱼! 🐠🐟

So the Giant Siamese Barb is starting to eat a lot more - it’ll overtake the Red Tail Payara pretty soon.

All seem to get along well at the moment, including the silver Aro and L200 green phantom (not shown)

Aside from the silver aro, the other 3 have been with us for >1.5 years and haven’t given any issues thus far.

Inseparable for the past 2 years!

Ctenopoma kingsleyae - not as common as the Asian climbing perch over in this part of the world, but just as intelligent and inquisitive. Highly underrated!

Our South American puffer happily swimming around before his teeth trimming 😂 totally didn't know what was coming his way. The trim was swift and we got him back in the water within 10 seconds. Glad that he was all happy and ready to ask for food right after that 😬

Watermelon's (one of our red eye puffers) house: Almost 4 months since he moved in. Plants are doing well with partial sunlight and LED strip lights. Just that the wabi kusa looks abit messy and growing in all directions.

Watermelon, one of our red eye puffers, always acts mysterious. Calm and careful with his movements, we gave him a cockle shell as a dinner plate weeks ago and he is so used to dining from the shell now. 😂🍽️
