🌀🐶Ever feel like your puppy is a tiny tornado of teeth and energy? Press the easy button! 🚨

Studies show that feeding dogs from interactive food toys—instead of only out of a bowl—can boost their brainpower, reduce stress, and help prevent future behavior problems. 📚✨

Here’s why food toys are a win-win:
🧠 Mental enrichment: Puppies need stimulation, introduction to different surfaces and challenges to work out! Food puzzles engage their natural foraging instincts and challenge their developing brains.
💤 Calmer behavior: Studies have shown that dogs given enrichment activities like food toys show fewer signs of anxiety and restlessness. Some studies also show that they are calmer.
🚫 Bite prevention: Keeping mouths busy with something appropriate to chew can reduce mouthing and nipping. A tired and calm puppy is less likely to bite your hands!
🐾 Healthier habits: Teaching puppies to problem-solve early sets the stage for lifelong learning and coping skills.

👉 Pro tip: Start with easy toys (like a Kong smeared with canned dog food) and increase difficulty as your pup gets better at it or if your pup wants to stay with something simple and easy, that is fine too.

🍖Ditch the bowl. Feed the brain. Build better behavior—one bite at a time. 🧩

The magic loose lead walking tools - Slip leads, grot collars, choke chains and prong collars 😡

Some dog trainers (i say "trainers" but its an unregulated industry so there are those with no actual education, or experience that call themselves "dog trainers) that will use, or recommend to use these torturous tools, because its a quick fix, which they "think" makes them look good.

But there is NO MAGIC!
JUST PAIN, AND DISCOMFORT
The dog just learns how to avoid this pain and discomfort by shutting down.

(What kind of person would want to intentionally cause pain and discomfort to a family member?)

But its not just the physical pain and discomfort, or the emotional pain and trauma, there is also a lot of physical damage these tools can do.

A dogs neck is a very delicate part of their bodies!

The neck and cervical spine contain the spinal cord, this is where the nerves of the front legs originate. Excessive paw licking is quite often misdiagnosed as allergies when it is in fact pain.

Putting stress on the neck can cause painful disc damage and shoulder problems

One of the most important structures of the nervous system "The Vagus Nerve" originates at neck level and this controls life essential organs like lung, heart, stomach, and intestinal tract.

The Thyroid gland is located in the neck. If this gets inflamed the immune system trys to remove the inflamed cells.
The destruction of the Thyroid gland cells can lead to hypothyroidism

Increased pressure put on the Jugular vein can cause seizures
Ear and Eye issues are significantly increased

Being je**ed on a lead causes whiplash and bruising.

The epidermis of a dog is only 3-5 cells thick
A humans is 10-15 cells thick (prong collars HURT)

Unfortunately there are some dog trainers that dont care if their results hurt or worry the dog.
All they care about are their own egos and money, not the welfare of the dog.

No educated, positive trainer would ever use or recommend these tools.
Please advocate for your dogs. Dont be a yanker, and find a trainer with ethics, morals and compassion

A well fitted Y shaped harness is the safest and kindest peice of equipment to use on a dog.

Socialisation is a term that many struggle to define.
It's often confused with play, but play is a completely separate and important skill.
In a world that pushes constant interaction ….where dogs are expected to greet and play with every other dog they see, we can unintentionally create a dog who views every other dog as a source of excitement.
This isn’t socialisation… and it never was.

A better way to think about socialisation is acclimation, helping your dog adjust to everything the world offers, not just other dogs.

Weather
Surfaces
Animals
Crowds of people, all ethnicities, ages, and movement styles
Noises
Scents

That’s just a taste of what true socialisation really is.

Acceptance is another way to view it.
Accepting, not reacting.
Building positive associations.

That is true socialisation.

🧯 MYTH:
“We don’t need to train - we’re not having any problems.”

✅ TRUTH:
Proactive training prevents problems.
By the time behaviour becomes “a problem,” it’s often rehearsed, reinforced, and emotionally rooted.

Training isn’t just for fixing issues - it’s for building the skills that protect against them.

You don’t wait for toothache to start brushing - you brush to avoid stress, pain, and costly intervention later.

🐾 Why foundation training matters:

✅ Name response – So your dog turns to you, even when it’s busy
✅ Lead walking – So walks and vet visits don’t become battles
✅ Recall – So you can relax off lead
✅ Handling – So grooming and vet checks don’t cause drama
✅ Settling – So they can rest in cafés, cars, and busy homes
✅ Social skills – So they focus with dogs around, not at them
✅ Engagement – So you’re more exciting than a squirrel
✅ Confidence – So new places and loud noises don’t spark fear
✅ Problem prevention – So jumping, guarding, stealing and barking don’t become habits

“We thought we’d wait to see if we needed training.”

I hear this a lot. But most of the dogs I support behaviourally didn’t start out “difficult.”
They started out normal...

A bit barky.
A bit clingy.
A bit excitable.
A bit distracted.
A bit pully on the lead.

The difference between something ‘small’ and a long-term behaviour problem?
👉 Repetition. Frustration. Missed windows.

Our early training isn’t just about sits and downs.
It’s about:
✔ Off lead freedom
✔ Everyday confidence
✔ Easy walks
✔ Safe family life
✔ Happy holidays

If your pup is “fine,” now’s the perfect time to train.

You’re not just teaching cute behaviours - you’re building the life you want together.

👉 Ready to start? I’ve got a space for you.

We want to Thank Shanice from SuperNova Academy for taking her time off and giving our fosterers and potential adopters two free sessions of beginner's puppy class!

Fosterers play a big role in determining how well a dog grows up, and adjusts into their adopted homes. What they give goes beyond a mere shelter and some food- a great deal of their time are often spent training the dog, especially in a puppy's early months. A dog who is not brought up well, will tend to exhibit behavioural issues, and even have difficulties finding a suitable adopter who can handle his/her behaviour.

Shanice is one of the trainers on the ADORE Program, so if you are adopting a dog under the ADORE Program, you can sign up for the ADORE training classes here- httpsa//docs.google.com/forms/d/157UqmP3paZryoH1bJegcfX7-FK27WrZMhwq98d8yRG0/viewform:::https://docs.google.com/forms/d/157UqmP3paZryoH1bJegcfX7-FK27WrZMhwq98d8yRG0/viewform

Small dogs can have a really tough time of it. Because they are small they are not always respected and listened to as much as larger breeds.

I should add that there are many excellent guardians and caregivers of small dogs who do make a huge amount of effort to help their small dogs feel comfortable in the world and who advocate for them, but sadly there are also far too many who don't, or other people who don't understand and don't try to.

Because these little dogs are small enough to be easily manhandled, the same amount of time is not always put into their training and ensuring that they are comfortable with what is going on around them.

Is it then any wonder that they become scared and vocal about their fear and wish to be left alone?
