Seek consent from your dog.
Pat your dog twice n stop.
If your dog wants more patting, he will nudge your hand or move towards you.

This will reduce forced interaction with you where your dog tolerates your patting or eventually bites you when he tries to move away from you.

Hull saw drive like a thermostat. A need creates tension, behaviour switches on, the need is met, behaviour switches off. Hungry dog works for food, eats, then relaxes.

Lorenz imagined drive like a pressure tank. Energy builds over time until a stimulus opens the valve. If pressure gets too high, the behaviour can leak out even without a trigger. Think zoomies, shadow chasing, or herding in the wrong place.

Both models are limited, but together they remind us why dogs sometimes act only when they “need” to and other times act because energy simply has to find an outlet.

Understanding motivation and the theories of it, are super important when we are working with dogs. These theories help us explain why dogs like bull terriers might jump and grab people’s clothes if they don’t get enough tuggy type games at home; but also why a dog might reduce pacing after sufficient exercise.

The science DOES matter. It does help. When we apply it reasonably. Rather than getting caught up in narrative, be aware that bias exists and let every idea and study be a drop in your pool and then let your experience, morals, values and beliefs flavour how you apply the ideas.
