At the launch of the 11th Edition of FairPrice’s Made In Singapore Fair 2022 by Minister Grace Fu, SPS Baey Yam Keng 马炎庆 and Deputy Chairman Seah Kian Peng of FairPrice Group.

“Food security is an existential issue many countries grapple with,” Ms Fu said. “Challenges such as geopolitical tensions and climate change have caused significant disruptions to global food supplies.”

She added that Singapore is especially vulnerable to supply disruptions as it imports more than 90 per cent of its food. Diversifying the nation’s food sources, including the growth of local food sources, helps to mitigate the impact of supply disruption.

Japan Komatsuna or Japanese Mustard Spinach

"The name 'komatsuna' means 'greens of Komatsu' in Japanese, a reference to the village of Komatsugawa in Edogawa, Tokyo, where it was heavily grown during the Edo period. It was named by Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth sh**un, who visited Edogawa in 1719 for hunting and stopped at the local Katori Shrine for lunch.

The shrine priest served him soup with a rice cake and a local leaf vegetable. The sh**un was impressed by the flavor of the vegetable so much and named it komatsuna, after the nearby Komatsu River (which gives Komatsugawa its name).

Till this day, the Shin-Koiwa Katori Shrine offers komatsuna to the deities on New Year's Eve. People who come to the shrine to pray on New Year's Day are also given komatsuna for good luck in the new year." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komatsuna

Komatsuna has a fresh, sweet taste and a crunchy texture. It is a very versatile vegetable and can be eaten raw, pickled, stir-fried, boiled, used fresh in salads, or added to soups. It is popular in soups as it can stay firm after being simmered.

It is an excellent source of beta carotene, vitamin C, calcium and iron. In fact, Japanese mustard spinach is said to contain 5 more times calcium than spinach.

“Taste, texture and freshness were all present in this dish. The freshness of the barramundi was able to shine through and bring out its delicious flavours. This was complemented by the crunchy Kai Lan and fermented chilli sauce, as well as a brown rice that added texture, making it a wholesome, well-balanced meal.”
