It’s almost the new year, and for many of us, that means fireworks! If your pet is sound-sensitive or easily spooked, here are some tips on how to make this period easier and safer.

Also, here’s your reminder that now’s the time to prepare any frozen enrichment toys that you might want to use. Lick mats and frozen treats (like Twirl and Trove) are particularly good activities to provide when your furry friends need a distraction, as licking makes pets feel calmer and more relaxed.

Bonus tip: Check your local news to get an idea of where any planned firework shows are happening, and avoid them accordingly!

Does chewing REALLY help to improve your dog’s dental health? 👇

Yes, chewing can improve your dog’s dental health! Chewing on appropriate items can help scrape off plaque and tartar from your dog’s teeth. This mechanical action works similarly to how brushing removes debris from human teeth. Removing plaque and tartar can also reduce bad breath!

That said, chewing shouldn’t completely replace regular teeth brushing for dogs.

For one, chewing tends to focus only on specific areas of the mouth, particularly the molars. Regular brushing ensures that all surfaces of your dog’s teeth, including the front, sides, and gumline, are cleaned thoroughly.

So here’s your reminder to brush your dog’s teeth regularly, while also providing them with appropriate and safe chews to keep their teeth and gums healthy! 😊

“Help, my dog doesn’t play with puzzle toys!”

This is something we hear quite often, so here are our tips on how to get your dog interested in an interactive toy!

1. Start easy
If your dog doesn’t play with enrichment toys often, start with toys that are easier to build their confidence and interest. Small things like placing treats in an easily assessible manner can give your dog some easy wins!

2. Reward approximate behavior
Just like learning a new trick, reward small steps that move your dog in the correct direction. For example, praise them when they paw the toy, even if it wasn’t forceful enough to knock a treat out.

3. Use high-value treats
If you’re trying to build interest in a toy, don’t fill it with their daily kibble. Choose something high-value, stinky, and exciting, like their favourite smoked or dehydrated treats!

4. Add movement
Add some movement to make the toy enticing. Gently rock the toy, roll it around, or play keep away. Be mindful that this might have the opposite effect if your dog is afraid of moving objects - you know your dog best!

If you’ve ever worried about your dog swallowing the ends of chews, this is for you. ❤️

A dog enrichment toy that’s both a slow feeder and a dispenser - have you gotten your hands on Pebble yet? Our latest dog enrichment toy, Pebble, can be pushed open for easy cleaning and preparation. It was designed to be a tight fit to prevent dogs from being able to open it. Here are some tips to open Pebble more easily: 1️⃣ When popping open a Pebble that has a blocker inserted, you can push directly on the blocker (instead of only through the opening) 2️⃣ Use the pad of your thumb (instead of the tip of your thumb) to exert greater force on the large fins, and rotate and repeat until pebble is split 3️⃣ Once Pebble is slightly split, place your fingers in the gap and gently pull the two pieces apart 4️⃣ To make Pebble easier to open, you can add some water around the edges before closing it We hope you find this helpful!
