Dental scaling involves manually scraping off your pooch’s built-up plaque on her teeth. Since it’s primarily an aesthetic procedure, we don't use sedation or general anesthesia. That also means we can only scale the outer layer of your pooch’s teeth. Beyond that, your best bet would be the vet. Before we start any procedure, we’ll first assess if your pooch is comfortable being touched by people in general, and specifically around the mouth. If she isn’t, we won't proceed. And you won’t be charged. To help your pooch feel safe during the procedure, our groomers always ensure that your pooch is comfortably in our laps. We also use the right tools as part of the procedure. It’s all about helping our pooches feel comfortable and safe when they’re going through it. At Ruff Cuts, teamwork makes the dream work. And we honour the wonderful folks like Grace, who have made us a go-to for quality dog grooming and daycare services. With a Diploma in Veterinary Bioscience, it was serendipity that led Grace to becoming a professional dog groomer with the Ruff Cuts team. She really enjoys seeing how comfortable and happy dogs are in their fur. And as a dog groomer, she helps to bring out the best in each of them. Although Grace can confidently handle different breeds with confidence and grace (yes, pun intended), she absolutely loves grooming poodles because their coats allow for various experimental lengths, styles and cuts. Grooming can be a really enjoyable experience for your pooch. Here are some things we can all do to facilitate that: 🐾 Provide your pooch with a big tub and table. You need lots of space for her to feel stable and comfortable. Also, big dogs really love to lie down; 🐾 Avoid eye contact or confrontation. If your pooch is nervous, let her calm down first, naturally. Don’t overreact - start by avoiding both eye contact and direct confrontations. Undesirable behaviour is reinforced by attention; 🐾 Prevent escalation. Stay in a position of calmness and composure. You're the top dog and you set the right tone; and 🐾 Put your pooch (and you) through an animal behaviour class. Grooming is just as much about cleaning and trimming as it is about conditioning your pooch to behave appropriately within a given context. So, remember grooming large breed dogs isn't all doom and gloom. We just need to lay the ground rules and create the right mood in the room. If you’ve got a senior dog like Qiuxiang, here are some practical tips for grooming a senior dog, especially if she’s double-coated: 🐾 Groom your senior dog on a stable surface. Because her limbs are weaker, she’s prone to "splooting" or "splaying" and that can get really uncomfortable or nerve wracking. The floor works best for a senior dog; 🐾 Avoid bending and over-manipulating her joints. Use a dremel (rotary tool) to get her nails done comfortably, while she’s lying down; 🐾 Provide a regular scrub-down. Use a gentler shampoo because her skin has become thinner and sensitive with age; 🐾 If she’s double-coated, remember she’s more prone to yeast infections caused by moisture build-up under her coat; 🐾 Ensure that she’s blown dry all the way down to her skin. Be patient and thorough about it; and 🐾 Remember the areas between her toes, where yeast tends to build up due to the moisture that gets trapped in these areas. How to choose the perfect style and length for dogs with double coats? Truth is, having a double-coated dog (especially one with long hair) presents many considerations. You’ll have to think about: 🐾 Dealing with lots of shedding; 🐾 Removing gunky stuff stuck in the fur, mostly around the butt and tail areas; and 🐾 How active your dog is and then decide what works for him (and you) A double-coated dog is an all-round high maintenance dog. He looks messy, feels hot, or sheds primarily because of its inner coat. To manage that, he just needs a good deshed and shave-down only under extreme circumstances (e.g. for senior dogs with hygiene and maintenance for overall health). A good, regular brushing routine really goes a long way in keeping those awful matts and tangles away! And that helps us as well! Because if you don't do some basic, regular brushing, we're gonna have to do a whole lot more. I mean, don't get us wrong. We do what we do. And we love what we do. But when left undealt with, severe matts and tangles are really gonna mangle the grooming experience for us and your pooch! Actually, if you've the right techniques, regular brushing can be effortless, even with a wiggly and whiny dog! Here're tips to make life easier for you (and your pooch!): 1. Brush with metal bristles. And none of that plastic stuff - they don't work! 2. Don't just brush the top layer. Really go deep, one layer at a time. 3. Comb through again with a metal comb. 4. Hold your pooch's elbow for better angle and grip. It's really quite simple.
