Educational Post: All Possible Causes of Head Tilt in Rabbits

ᛜ Encephalitozoon cuniculi (EC): This is the most common suspected diagnosis for rabbit head tilt.
There is a widespread misconception is “Head tilt = E. cuniculi”. However this is technically false - EC is *not* always a cause of a rabbit's head tilt. But that doesn’t mean EC should be excluded as a cause either. EC should always be considered in suspected diagnosis for treatment - but seeking explanations for symptoms and a rabbit's overall health state should not stop there.

More than 1 health issue can occur in addition to EC in a rabbit. In fact, EC more commonly than not manifests as a result of a co-morbidity that is weakening the immune system's ability to "check" the organism. So it's important for a vet to investigate, blood test if possible/feasible, include targeted EC treatment, consider other suspected causes and examine for additional health problems & ensure those are addressed and treated as well.

ᛜ Middle and/or Inner Ear Infection: Ear Disease of the middle and/or inner ear, is the next most common cause of head tilt. Rabbits with lopped ears are statistically pre-dispositioned for ear infections among other health conditions.
--> Pasteurella bacteria is a common cause among other bacterial strains. And if the rabbit has a history of *upper respiratory infection* typically due to Pasteurella but also other bacteria - then the likelihood of spread from the sinus cavity to the middle ear is high, causing spreading infection & advanced disease that can lead to head tilt/vestibular disease.
