PART 2️⃣ of dental diseases in dogs
How can plaque and tartar be prevented⁉️
The best way to prevent tartar build-up is through daily tooth brushing using a toothpaste that is specifically formulated for dogs and is designed to be swallowed. Unfortunately, even though it is the best form of plaque control, most dog owners do not brush their dog’s teeth daily 🪥
Special dog chew toys and treats may also help reduce or delay plaque and tartar build-up. Some pet foods have been specifically formulated as dental diets that mechanically and/or chemically assist in plaque removal. Water additives are also available.
However, once tartar has formed professional scaling and polishing under general anesthesia will be needed as it cannot easily be removed by diets and/or brushing.
🤔What is involved with a routine dental cleaning?
A routine dental cleaning involves a thorough dental examination, followed by a dental scaling and polishing to remove the plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. Your veterinarian will perform pre- anesthetic blood tests to ensure that kidney and liver function are satisfactory for anesthesia.
Once your dog is anesthetized, your veterinarian will thoroughly examine his mouth, noting the alignment of the teeth and the extent of tartar accumulation both above and below the gumline. Intraoral radiographs (X-rays) to assess the viability of the tooth root and surrounding bone should also be performed. If periodontal disease is severe, it may not be possible to save the affected teeth. Depending on the affected tooth, extraction may be the only option )-:

*EHRLICHIOSIS*
This is Fafa, she was presented lethargic with severe and profuse nose bleed. Dr Esther performed a chromatographic immunoassay showing that Fafa was positive for a bacteria called Ehrlichia canis which lead to a diagnosis of Ehrlichiosis. After stopping the nose bleed, Fafa did well in the hospital with treatment.
What is Ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne infectious disease of dogs, usually carried by the brown dog tick which is a carrier of the tick-borne bacteria called Ehrlichia canis. The usual sign and symptoms of the disease are fever, swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss and bleeding disorders such as nosebleeds or bleeding under the skin.
Diagnosis: It is usually diagnosed by running a complete blood count test (CBC) and a chromatographic immunoassay.
- In the complete blood count test (CBC), a low platelet count (called thrombocytopenia), anaemia (low red blood cell counts), and/or high levels of the protein globulin in the blood may be found while for a chromatographic immunoassay test, it is usually used to detect which antibody is causing the issue
Prevention: For prevention of tick-borne infectious disease to your pets, flea and tick preventives would be the most effective prevention.

Part 2️⃣ of Hamster abscess….
💊Treatment includes: draining the abscess and administering an antibiotics or having it surgically removed.
Abscesses that have burst, your veterinarian will make sure all of the contents of the abscess have drained and then flush the wound.
Abscesses that have not ruptured can be surgically removed, and often heal better than those that are lanced, drained, and flushed. They may need to sedate or anaesthetise your hamsters in order to do this.
Your veterinarian may shave the area around them, clean them, and prescribe medication/ointment containing antibiotics and steroids.
❔Prevention:
Fighting hamsters should be separated from one another.
Make sure your pet’s cage has no sharp edges.
Avoid bedding with wood shavings.
We are thrilled to hear that N is doing well, no loss of appetite and still as active as ever. N has recovered from the abscess (-: and is able to see from both eyes now as the swelling has went down💝
welcome to the world little bundle of joys 🤭❤️

PART 2 ⏭
Uveitis may occur suddenly 😢 (acute uveitis) or may develop more slowly (chronic uveitis). With acute uveitis, the pupil is usually constricted. With chronic uveitis, the pupil may be constricted or normal and iris may change in colour, cataracts may develop on the affected eye, or the lens of the affected eye may become dislocated or luxated.
💊 Treatment of uveitis
Treatment is initially aimed at reducing inflammation and providing pain relief primarily with topical eye medications. Your vet may prescribe topical eye medications and systemic medications to alleviate pain and decrease inflammation.
Dr esther sent Jasmine’s blood sample out to a lab to check for toxoplasma and it turned out that Jasmine was suffering from toxoplasma, a protozoa that can cause uveitis. In our next series look forward to learning about this cunning protozoa‼️
PART 2 OF EYELID LACERATION⏭
💊Diagnosis
If your veterinarian finds a foreign object in the eye, appropriate treatment will be determined. The nature, force, and the direction of the object's impact will help to identify which tissues may be involved. The visual response to a menace (i.e, blinking in response to an object being brought close to the eye), as well as aversion to bright light, will be assessed. The pupils will be examined for size, shape, symmetry, and light reflexes. If a foreign object is not found, tests to check if an ulcer of the cornea, or some other naturally occurring cause that is affecting the eye, before looking into trauma to the deeper parts of the eye.
🧬Treatment
The course of treatment will depend on the severity of the injury and the part of the eye that was injured. If the wound is nonperforating and has no wound edge or opening, an Elizabethan collar for preventing the dog from scratching at the eye is often prescribed, along with eye drops.
Your veterinarian will prescribe medications that are suitable to the seriousness of the wound.
🏠Living and Management
Deep or wide penetrating wounds that have not been sutured need to be rechecked every 24 to 48 hours for the first several days. If the penetrating wound is superficial, rechecking every three to five days until it is healed is advised.
Chester’s laceration has been repaired and his eyelid edges aligned. His post op wound is looking swollen however he should go back to his handsome self soon 😍

‼️VIEWERS DISCRETION ADVISED‼️
Today we are talk about Bladder stones (uroliths or cystic calculi), which are rock-like formations of minerals that develop in the urinary bladder. There may be a large, single stone or a collection of stones that range in size from sand-like grains to gravel. It is common for a mixture of both small and large stones to be present.
🌡What are the clinical signs of bladder stones?
The most common signs that a dog has bladder stones are hematuria (blood in the urine) and dysuria (straining to urinate). Hematuria occurs because the stones rub against the bladder wall, irritating and damaging the tissue thus causing bleeding.
Dysuria may result from inflammation and swelling of the bladder wall or the urethra (the tube that transports the urine from the bladder to the exterior of the body) from muscle spasms or from a physical obstruction of urine flow.
Large stones may act almost like a valve or stopcock, causing an intermittent or partial obstruction at the neck of the bladder, the point where the bladder attaches to the urethra. Small stones may flow with the urine into the urethra where they can become lodged and cause an obstruction. If an obstruction occurs, the bladder cannot be emptied fully and if the obstruction is complete, the dog will not be able to urinate at all. If not relieved, the bladder may rupture.
A complete obstruction is potentially life threatening and requires immediate emergency treatment. A urinary obstruction will usually be recognized in a dog that is straining to urinate without producing any urine.
⁉️How did my dog get bladder stones?
This may be due to dietary factors or due to some previous disease in the bladder, especially a bacterial infection. Sometimes the condition may be due to a problem with the body's metabolism.
When the amount of this compound exceeds a threshold level, the urine becomes saturated and cannot hold any more of the compound. Th

A 🐱 fell due to unmeshed house during renovation. Dr Esther diagnosed her with pneumothorax which caused her lungs to collapse, needing oxygen therapy and other emergency interventions.
❔What is high rise syndrome? While cats are famous for their ability to land on all fours from all sorts of heights, this isn’t always the case. Cats who fall from steep heights can suffer serious injuries. It also happens so often when they fall from a steep height
Cats love to sit up high in windowsills and watch the birds or bask in the warm sun. They can also be tempted to lunge after a bird that comes too close or get startled by a vacuum or other loud noise in the house and take a tumble.
If your cat falls from a steep height, you should go to the Veterinarian as soon as possible. This holds true even if you’re not sure how badly your cat is hurt. While you may be able to notice a broken bone or laceration, you won’t be able to see internal injuries like fractured ribs or vertebrae.
A full physical exam will be needed as well as X-rays, ultrasounds or other diagnostic tests to evaluate your cat’s condition. Some of the most common injuries that can occur in a bad fall include:
* Shattered jaw
* Broken limbs or pelvis
* Fractured teeth or palate
* Punctured lungs
* Spinal fractures
* Ruptured bladder
Your cat’s treatment will depend on the type and severity of the injuries. It can include medication to control pain, hospitalization, and surgery to set broken bones or repair other damage.
Many cats will survive a fall, but it can be a long, painful, and expensive road to recovery, especially in the case of severe injuries.
🐱 was brought in as soon as possible and survived this steep height fall. If you own a kitten/cat, please do your responsibility as owners to mesh up your house to prevent any sorts of accidents‼️

Medical Diagnosis Sunday! 🩺
🐶 This Goldie came to us with symptoms of excessive head shaking and scratching. Dr Esther quickly diagnosed Goldie with aural hematoma and to prevent it from possible or permanent disfigurement.
A hematoma is a localized mass of blood that is confined within an organ or tissue. The most common type of hematoma in the dog is that affecting the pinna or ear flap.
It occurs when a blood vessel in the ear bursts and bleeds into the space between the ear cartilage and skin. Dogs with long, floppy ears are at greater risk, pets with clotting or bleeding disorders may also develop hematomas, with or without a history of trauma (such as scratching, shaking the ears, or bite wounds)
In different cases, after the Vet has drained the blood, the empty space (dead space) will be removed by placing numerous sutures through the ear which will promote controlled scar tissue formation. Finally, reattaching the cartilage to the skin will help prevent future recurrence.
It is important to treat the underlying cause, which will be determined by the Vet. In many cases, the underlying cause is an infection or allergy and it would need to be surgically corrected and treated.
For Goldie, Dr Esther surgically incised the skin over the hematoma to drain the blood and remove any blood clots.
Drainage is a temporary correction. The longer the hematoma is left untreated the greater the likelihood of permanent damage and disfigurement. Drainage may be used if the hematoma is very small, or if the patient cannot undergo surgery for some reason. If drainage is the chosen treatment, be prepared to return to your veterinarian for a few visits, as repeated draining is often necessary. This treatment method may eventually eliminate the problem, although it will take longer, Vets will also prescribe medication to reduce the chances of occurrence.
Look out for these symptoms in your pets and talk to your Vet if unsure. Aural hematoma is not a blood blister and

Sorry we are abit late today but we are back with Sand impaction which is very common especially if your dog is visiting the beach very often 🏖
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but not for poor Bella. Bella came in for an emergency after eating sand at the beach when her owners were not noticing.
X-rays showed sausage-shaped impacted intestine, which was filled with something that looked suspiciously like sand.
Fortunately for Bella, she had a happy ending after a rough night of pooping out the sand she had digested.
Next time she goes to the beach, Bella’s activities will be monitored more closely to keep her from eating sand again. If your dog has tummy troubles after spending time at the shore, see your Veterinarian as soon as possible because sand impaction is a serious problem and not all dogs successfully recover 😷
