PART 2๏ธโฃ of dental diseases in dogs
How can plaque and tartar be preventedโ๏ธ
The best way to prevent tartar build-up is through daily tooth brushing using a toothpaste that is specifically formulated for dogs and is designed to be swallowed. Unfortunately, even though it is the best form of plaque control, most dog owners do not brush their dogโs teeth daily ๐ชฅ
Special dog chew toys and treats may also help reduce or delay plaque and tartar build-up. Some pet foods have been specifically formulated as dental diets that mechanically and/or chemically assist in plaque removal. Water additives are also available.
However, once tartar has formed professional scaling and polishing under general anesthesia will be needed as it cannot easily be removed by diets and/or brushing.
๐คWhat is involved with a routine dental cleaning?
A routine dental cleaning involves a thorough dental examination, followed by a dental scaling and polishing to remove the plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. Your veterinarian will perform pre- anesthetic blood tests to ensure that kidney and liver function are satisfactory for anesthesia.
Once your dog is anesthetized, your veterinarian will thoroughly examine his mouth, noting the alignment of the teeth and theย extent of tartar accumulation both above and below the gumline. Intraoral radiographs (X-rays) to assess the viability of the tooth root and surrounding bone should also be performed. If periodontal disease is severe, it may not be possible to save the affected teeth. Depending on the affected tooth, extraction may be the only option )-:

*EHRLICHIOSIS*
This is Fafa, she was presented lethargic with severe and profuse nose bleed. Dr Esther performed a chromatographic immunoassay showing that Fafa was positive for a bacteria called Ehrlichia canis which lead to a diagnosis of Ehrlichiosis. After stopping the nose bleed, Fafa did well in the hospital with treatment.
What is Ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne infectious disease of dogs, usually carried by the brown dog tick which is a carrier of the tick-borne bacteria called Ehrlichia canis. The usual sign and symptoms of the disease are fever, swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss and bleeding disorders such as nosebleeds or bleeding under the skin.
Diagnosis: It is usually diagnosed by running a complete blood count test (CBC) and a chromatographic immunoassay.
- In the complete blood count test (CBC), a low platelet count (called thrombocytopenia), anaemia (low red blood cell counts), and/or high levels of the protein globulin in the blood may be found while for a chromatographic immunoassay test, it is usually used to detect which antibody is causing the issue
Prevention: For prevention of tick-borne infectious disease to your pets, flea and tick preventives would be the most effective prevention.

Part 2๏ธโฃ of Hamster abscessโฆ.
๐Treatment includes: draining the abscess and administering an antibiotics or having it surgically removed.
Abscesses that have burst, your veterinarian will make sure all of the contents of the abscess have drained and then flush the wound.
Abscesses that have not ruptured can be surgically removed, and often heal better than those that are lanced, drained, and flushed. They may need to sedate or anaesthetise your hamsters in order to do this.
Your veterinarian may shave the area around them, clean them, and prescribe medication/ointment containing antibiotics and steroids.
โPrevention:
Fighting hamsters should be separated from one another.
Make sure your petโs cage has no sharp edges.
Avoid bedding with wood shavings.
We are thrilled to hear that N is doing well, no loss of appetite and still as active as ever. N has recovered from the abscess (-: and is able to see from both eyes now as the swelling has went down๐

PART 2 โญ
Uveitis may occur suddenly ๐ข (acute uveitis) or may develop more slowly (chronic uveitis). With acute uveitis, the pupil is usually constricted. With chronic uveitis, the pupil may be constricted or normal and iris may change in colour, cataracts may develop on the affected eye, or the lens of the affected eye may become dislocated or luxated.
๐ Treatment of uveitis
Treatment is initially aimed at reducing inflammation and providing pain relief primarily with topical eye medications. Your vet may prescribe topical eye medications and systemic medications to alleviate pain and decrease inflammation.
Dr esther sent Jasmineโs blood sample out to a lab to check for toxoplasma and it turned out that Jasmine was suffering from toxoplasma, a protozoa that can cause uveitis. In our next series look forward to learning about this cunning protozoaโผ๏ธ
PART 2 OF EYELID LACERATIONโญ
๐Diagnosis
If your veterinarian finds a foreign object in the eye, appropriate treatment will be determined. The nature, force, and the direction of the object's impact will help to identify which tissues may be involved. The visual response to a menace (i.e, blinking in response to an object being brought close to the eye), as well as aversion to bright light, will be assessed. The pupils will be examined for size, shape, symmetry, and light reflexes. If a foreign object is not found, tests to check if an ulcer of the cornea, or some other naturally occurring cause that is affecting the eye, before looking into trauma to the deeper parts of the eye.
๐งฌTreatment
The course of treatment will depend on the severity of the injury and the part of the eye that was injured. If the wound is nonperforating and has no wound edge or opening, an Elizabethan collar for preventing the dog from scratching at the eye is often prescribed, along with eye drops.
Your veterinarian will prescribe medications that are suitable to the seriousness of the wound.
๐ Living and Management
Deep or wide penetrating wounds that have not been sutured need to be rechecked every 24 to 48 hours for the first several days. If the penetrating wound is superficial, rechecking every three to five days until it is healed is advised.
Chesterโs laceration has been repaired and his eyelid edges aligned. His post op wound is looking swollen however he should go back to his handsome self soon ๐
MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS SUNDAY โจ๐
โผ๏ธVIEWERS DISCRETION ADVISEDโผ๏ธ
Today we are talk about Bladder stones (uroliths or cystic calculi), which are rock-like formations of minerals that develop in the urinary bladder. There may be a large, single stone or a collection of stones that range in size from sand-like grains to gravel. It is common for a mixture of both small and large stones to be present.
๐กWhat are the clinical signs of bladder stones?
The most common signs that a dog has bladder stones are hematuria (blood in the urine) and dysuria (straining to urinate). Hematuria occurs because the stones rub against the bladder wall, irritating and damaging the tissue thus causing bleeding.
Dysuria may result from inflammation and swelling of the bladder wall or the urethra (the tube that transports the urine from the bladder to the exterior of the body) from muscle spasms or from a physical obstruction of urine flow.
Large stones may act almost like a valve or stopcock, causing an intermittent or partial obstruction at the neck of the bladder, the point where the bladder attaches to the urethra. Small stones may flow with the urine into the urethra where they can become lodged and cause an obstruction. If an obstruction occurs, the bladder cannot be emptied fully and if the obstruction is complete, the dog will not be able to urinate at all. If not relieved, the bladder may rupture.
A complete obstruction is potentially life threatening and requires immediate emergency treatment. A urinary obstruction will usually be recognized in a dog that is straining to urinate without producing any urine.
โ๏ธHow did my dog get bladder stones?
This may be due to dietary factors or due to some previous disease in the bladder, especially a bacterial infection. Sometimes the condition may be due to a problem with the body's metabolism.
When the amount of this compound exceeds a threshold level, the urine becomes saturated and cannot hold any more of the compound. Th
