Welcome to our “Behind the Vet Scenes” series to bring curious pet parents behind closed doors to understand how we care for our precious pets.

In this premier edition, we share the many steps that goes into a dental Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT):
- Thorough examination of all teeth, including full mouth dental x-rays to assess 60% of the teeth hidden beneath the gums
- Dental scaling to remove tartar and calculus from all sides of teeth (outside, inside, front and back)
- Polish all teeth surfaces smooth to reduce further tartar formation
- Other treatment on diseased teeth if necessary

Just like how we only go to a dentist (and not our hair salon/spa) for our dental care, our pets’ dental procedures must only be done by trained professional veterinarians!

LIBRELA: New treatment for dogs with ARTHRITIS

Arthritis causes debilitating pain to middle aged and senior dogs, affecting their quality of life. We can now help them better with their arthritic pain with Librela, a once a month injection under the skin.

Librela contains antibodies which block nerve signals that lead to arthritic pain, and also reduces joint inflammation. As antibodies are proteins, they are eliminated from the body with minimal involvement of the liver or kidneys. Librela may reduce or eliminate the need for other pain relief medications, and work well together with synovan injections, joint supplements and acupuncture.

⚠️ Have you noticed longer waiting times at your local vet clinic? ⚠️

This is because there is currently a global veterinary staff shortage.

In Singapore, there are currently 474 licensed veterinarians, with a portion only working part-time or not working at all.

Estimated animal population, according to known data:
- 73,000 dogs
- 145,000 cats
- 80,000 small mammals (pets)
- Total: 298,000

👉 This means that 1 vet needs attend to at least 628 pets. (In human medicine, the doctor to population ratio is 1:385 in SG.)

👉 Every animal patient is commonly attended to by 1 vet and approximately 1-2 nurses each time.

👉 And for every emergency patient, usually the whole team dives in to help the patient!

𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀.

Pet owners can consider making the following information readily accessible:

✔️ Information about changes in their local clinic's opening hours (which may be reduced due to recent COVID-induced staff shortages)

✔️ The location of the nearest animal emergency clinic/hospital

✔️ Remember to always phone ahead to alert the practice if presenting with an emergency

Vets, vet technicians & vet nurses are quitting the industry due to burnout, further adding to the manpower strain.

𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆.

While your local veterinary team tries their best, please be kind to them and be patient.

2022 will be another challenging year for the local veterinary industry as we try our best to meet the increasing demand of pets and pet owners.

Let us work together to provide sustainable healthcare to our beloved animals. 💪😊
