Jake, a 9-year-old Maltese cross was referred to our emergency department with sudden vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal pain. Tests at their regular vet showed high liver enzymes, high bilirubin, and a gall bladder mucocele.

What is a Gallbladder Mucocele?

A gallbladder mucocele (GBM) is when the gallbladder becomes swollen because of thick mucus that builds up inside, blocking normal bile flow. This can cause pain, vomiting, and jaundice. In very severe cases, the gallbladder may rupture.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

GBM is diagnosed via a combination of physical exam, blood work and an abdominal ultrasound. Treatment involves surgical removal of the diseased gallbladder (cholecystectomy). Bile duct stenting may also be required to relieve the obstruction and restore normal bile flow. In this case, the surgery was performed by our specialist surgeon Dr Derniese. Jake was monitored closely in our ICU for potential complications like bile leakage and after 2 days in hospital, Jake was fit for discharge and has since made a full recovery!

It has been a few months since his discharge, and the team at Westside is very happy to hear from Jake’s family that he is doing very well – back to his usual playful self!

The exceptional teamwork demonstrated by our emergency, imaging, and surgical teams, along with the support of referring vets and Jake's caring and devoted family, ensures that we provide the highest standard of care for our patients.

As with all festive periods, the rush goes on in our emergency room due to the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations, but Westside Emergency is still available for all urgent cases.

As per emergency room protocols, pets are triaged upon arrival and seen based on the urgency and stability of their condition, not on a first-come, first-served basis.
If your pet needs more urgent care, they will be attended to sooner. Conversely, pets in stable conditions may experience a longer wait.

If you’re concerned your pet may need immediate medical attention, please call us at 6931 0095 so our team can offer advice and prepare for your pet’s arrival.

KoKo, a 6-month-old Maine c**n, was rushed to our ECC team with difficulty breathing. Initial diagnostics by the emergency team worked out that Koko had pyothorax (pus in the chest cavity). After initial stabilization with oxygen support, chest drains and IV antibiotics, Koko was stable enough for a CT scan, which revealed a caudal mediastinal abscess — an uncommon and serious condition.

Koko was then referred to our surgical specialist, Dr. Derniese. She performed an exploratory thoracotomy (open chest surgery) to remove the abscess and clear the chest of pus. The surgery went smoothly and after a few days of intensive care with the ECC team, Koko’s recovery has been steady ever since!

With the collaborative efforts of the emergency and surgery departments, Koko has since fully recovered. Swipe through to see his recovery journey!

Do you own a brachycephalic dog? What do we need to know about them to be able to care for them better?

Brachycephalics are predisposed to a lot of health problems such as difficulty birthing, ocular and dental disease as well as heat stress and exhaustion all due to their short faces and short snouts.

Any seemingly non-related problem such as vomiting from a bad diet or treat he/she may be sensitive to, can easily lead to aspiration and breathing difficulties as compared to their long snout friends.

Hello everyone,

Earlier this year, our team began writing short, informative articles based on our experience in animal emergency and critical care (ECC) here in Singapore. Our goal is to provide pet owners with valuable insights to better understand animal ECC, prevent emergencies, and recognize early signs of distress in their pets.

Please see our first article below regarding urethral obstruction (also known as “blocked bladder” or “blocked cat”), and feel free to call us 24/7 at 6931 0095 for any pet emergency needs.

Urethral Obstruction (aka “blocked bladder/ blocked cat”) • This happens when bladder stones/ grit/ sludge gets trapped at the bladder exit OR in the urethra, this acts like a plug and stops any urine from flowing out. • If you notice your pet straining to urinate, getting in and out of the...
