This 12 year old female terrier cross had surgery to remove a large mammary tumor. This mammary tumor had been present for 6 months. Due to the size of the wound, a flank fold flap was used to close the defect.
A review 2 weeks post surgery showed good healing of the surgical wounds, and the biopsy results showed that the mammary tumor was benign. We recommend that most mammary tumors be removed as soon as possible when small.
Approximately 50% of mammary tumors are malignant, and even benign tumors can grow large, ulcerate and become infected.
Spaying female dogs before their second heat cycle will significantly reduce their risk of developing mammary tumors.
