We came across an article locally. And We believe it will help those Bird Lovers at the beginning stage or going to begin. Great to read up, and acquire the information.
HOW TO CARE FOR THAT LOST LOVEBIRD YOU FOUND
Every once and a while Lovebird escapes. All our apartments look alike and they do not know how to get back. They are domesticated birds, and will usually find another apartment to enter, in hope of finding their way home.
So what happens when you find a lost lovebird? What do they eat? How should I store him/her? How I find the owner back?
1. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS BEFORE HANDLING THE BIRD.
This would prevent the lost bird from escaping to certain doom again.
2. USE GLOVES IF YOU ARE WORRIED OF ITS BITE, BUT BE GENTLE.
Yes Lovebirds do pack a punch when it bites. Ask any lovebird owner and they will be sure to tell you that they have at least bled once or twice by their bite.
3. STORAGE
Find a shoe box and punch many small holes into it so that there is light and the lovebird can breathe.
It can even be a pail where you can use some temporary netting as cover.
The main thing is that you want to let the bird calm down, and also make sure he can breathe.
Put in some newspaper or tissue paper on the base so that if u need to clean it, it will be easier.
4. FOOD
One bowl of water (sauce plate if possible) is important. Make sure it's not so big that the bird will drown.
Generally most lovebirds will recognise sunflower seeds (with the shell, unsalted and unflavoured). They will also pick on rolled oats, Brocolli, and even apples and bananas. Hulled Millets are great if you are near a provision shop with natural foods.
Avoid spinach as those are too high in iron and can kill the birds.
5. CHECK THE BIRD FOR ANY LEG RINGS
Some owners will have leg rings on their birds. Hence if you do see one, you can use the number as identification. DO NOT ANNOUNCE the number to the whole world. Ask the person to send you the number for verification.
6. CHECK THE BIRD FOR ANY INJURY
Have a look to see if the bird is just exhausted or injured. A drop of blood is considers a huge loss for a tiny bird, so if necessary, corn starch or flour can be used to clot up any bleeding wounds. You can seek help from a vet if really necessary.
7. FACEBOOK LOST PETS SECTIONS
Go to pages like Lost & Found Birds Singapore and Try not to post a full picture if possible, but rather state the species and Color and ask for leg ring number (if any). That would help you identify the correct owner.
You have to understand that there are often some individuals seeking to make a quick buck, so be cautious in what you communicate.
If you are not familiar with bird types and species you can try asking the admin for help.
8. NO CLAIM ON BIRD
At times, no one will claim the bird. If you choose to adopt it, do check out our other posts. If you would like to put it up for adoption, we do suggest you put it with an adoption fee, which can firstly, help cover your costs in maintaining the bird, and secondly, discourage re-sellers. It's always better to find a loving home for that bird your rescued.
