Remaining fit and increasing muscle mass is important for your pets to have a better qualityof life. Letโs take a look at one of our furry clients coming down for fitness sessions!
Oddie Ng came to VRH due to weakness in her hindlimbs. She would tend to splay in her hindlimbs, especially when laying down. Oddieโs owner worked with us to provide a more activelifestyle at home with simple home-exercises, and brought her down for therapy sessions on
a weekly basis. Therapy sessions aimed to promote muscle growth especially in her hindlimbs, aswell as to increase her endurance. Oddie looks forward to the land exercises (and occasional treats) with us!
Great Job Oddie, keep up the good work! ๐ฅณ
Rehabilitation land exercises for dogs and cats include controlled movements, resistance and endurance training, and stretching of specific muscle groups designed to improve muscle tone and flexibility. In this video, rehabilitation therapist Etta Ng guides Cookie as he balances on the wobble cushion, strengthening his hind legs to enhance his overall strength and mobility.
Regular rehabilitation can also effectively manage and prevent pain, improving the quality of life for your companion animal.

10-year-old pug with IVDD
๐ฅThe Power of Rehabilitation ๐ฅ
Bruno, a 10-year-old pug, was diagnosed with Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Following his ventral slot surgery for a herniated disc, he was unable to walk and needed constant assistance. His rehabilitation plan included laser therapy and hydrotherapy, which became his lifeline.
At VRH, we are fully committed to making a difference for your companion animals. Huge kudos to Brunoโs family for their dedication and commitment! It was truly a privilege to witness Brunoโs transformation journey.

VRH bosu ball rehabilitation
The versatility of the bosu ball helps animals cope with conditions such as Swimmers Syndrome by improving balance and coordination, in addition to strength building and proprioception. Hereโs a short clip of Sky, diagnosed with Swimmers Syndrome, working hard on the bosu ball!

VRH soft tissue massage
Kiev presented with muscle tightness and trigger points along the paraspinal muscles, triceps and hip flexor muscles. In addition to other rehabilitation modalities, soft tissue massage was recommended to relieve stiffness and tension and improve muscle movement.

VRH Passive Range of Motion
Did you know that our joints contain a viscous liquid that can harden if not used for a long time? This causes stiffness, reducing the flexibility a joint used to possess.
Constant motion through passive movement (e.g., Passive Range of Motion) and active exercises (e.g., strengthening exercises on land or hydrotherapy) help keep this liquid placid (to replace with "fluid") and allow for better motion of the joint, resulting in more fluidity in movement and reduced joint stiffness.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is a form of electrotherapy. It transmits electrical impulses to the nerves, resulting in the contraction of targeted muscle groups.
NMES aids in muscle strengthening and slows down the process of muscle atrophy, particularly in non-ambulatory animals.

One of the main goals of rehabilitation is to improve the overall quality of life for your companion animal.
As they age, your pet may experience difficulty moving around and getting up due to joint pain and stiffness. Rehabilitation can help older pets stay active and mobile. Therapy plans may include pain management, muscle strengthening and maintenance exercises.
With less pain, your pet might find it easier to cope with his/her daily activities. They might feel more comfortable climbing up the stairs, or getting up from a sitting or laying position.
Consider bringing your furry loved ones for rehabilitation. You may be surprised by how therapy can enhance their comfort and quality of life as they age gracefully!

Willow, a 10-year-old Persian Cross, suffered from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). IVDD occurs when a herniated disc compresses the spinal cord's nerves, resulting in loss of hind limb function.
After a hemilaminectomy and corpectomy surgery, Willow was transferred to VRH to regain mobility and strength in his hind limbs. He began intensive therapy twice a week where hydrotherapy and proprioceptive exercises were performed to stimulate the nervous system. Willowโs humans were also taught home exercises for Willowโs daily ongoing care.
Seven sessions later, Willow made attempts to walk on the underwater treadmill. During the four months with our team, he made remarkable improvements and can now stand on all fours and walk independently. With the ownerโs commitment to regular therapy sessions and home exercises, Willow is well on his way to recovery.
We are very proud of Willow and hope he keeps up the great work! ๐

Hydrotherapy in the underwater treadmill (UWTM) improves your companion animalโs stamina, flexibility, and proprioception. UWTM is beneficial for animals during post-surgical recovery, or just for fitness and maintenance.ย
Some unique features of hydrotherapy in the UWTM include buoyancy, which creates a low-impact environment for exercise, and water resistance, which challenges your pet in a controlled setting.ย
The next time youโre in a pool, try experiencing the hydrotherapy sensations. Become more aware of your body posture and joint movements as your muscles engage. All of these contribute to stability and proprioception training.

VRH pet massage for relief
Massage is a great technique to aid in relieving muscle soreness, just like for humans. Massage also helps to promote lymphatic drainage, and for our companion animals, it creates bonding time between owners and their animal BFFs.
If your animal companion is experiencing muscle stiffness due to active play or agility work, massage therapy may help alleviate muscle tension and trigger points throughout the body. Similarly, if stiffness is related to osteoarthritis in geriatric dogs, massage therapy can provide relief.
