Rabbits are so often featured munching on carrots that we tend to associate rabbits’ diets with carrots. However, this is an unfortunate misunderstanding as carrots contain too much sugar to be fed to rabbits more than as an occasional treat. Rabbits have very sensitive digestive systems, and root vegetables contain complex carbohydrates that are difficult for them to digest. Also, although carrots may seem hard to us, they are definitely not hard enough to file down rabbits’ teeth. Rabbits need Timothy hay as 75-80% of their diet. Although admittedly it is not the most palatable of feeds, it is crucial for their health. Some rabbits may be picky and refuse Timothy hay; however, there are many types of hay in the market which provide more palatable choices and yet still consist of more than 70% Timothy hay. There are also different brands which offer Timothy hay of different tastes and textures. A large part of life as a pet owner is experimenting, especially with our pets' diets. As pets can't talk, we can't ask them what they like. Thus, it's our responsibility as owners to explore different options which will be more attractive to our pets and yet still provide sufficient nutrition for them. A healthy pet is every bit as important as a well-fed pet; in fact, health should always take precedence. Therefore, ensure that your rabbit gets the right nutrients, not just the favourite treats!
Our pets are our best friends, our unwavering comrades, and they depend on us, their pawrents, to provide them with proper care. As our furry friends are unable to speak the human language, they rely on our being able to look out for their needs. The primary questions a veterinarian asks when a pet is unwell is if there have been any differences in the pet's: 🍝eating 🥛drinking 🚽peeing 💩pooing 😩energy level the five prime indicators of a change in a pet's health status. A common condition male cats present with is difficulty urinating or the presence of blood in urine (haematuria). This is a condition called feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). As the urethra is very thin in male cats (its width is less than ¼ of the diameter of a Yakult straw), they are very vulnerable. Many factors can lead to FLUTD, including 🔸diet (insufficient water intake, overeating, etc) 🔹obesity 🔸stress (e.g. multi-cat households) 🔹urinary blockages and crystals 🔸urinary tract infection (UTI) Should your cat be showing any of the following signs: 🔹dysuria (straining while urinating, an increased frequency of urine but with little output or vocalising while in the litterbox) 🔸peeing in spots outside of the litterbox 🔹haematuria, it is time to bring your cat to the vet for a check, as not only is it extremely painful and uncomfortable for your cat (imagine having a full bladder but being unable to release it, or not without excruciating pain!), and can lead to many further complications such as a blocked bladder through a formation of stones in the bladder or a urethral plug. This can quickly prove fatal for your cat. So fellow cat owners, let us look out for our beloved cat's health and comfort together. Let's keep track of our cats' eating, drinking, and litterbox habits, so that we can spot any changes promptly. Also, let us always provide plenty of fresh drinking water for our cats, and ensure that they drink plenty. We should also encourag
We've had the season of giving, the season of love, the season of celebrations, but through it all, our beloved pups who give us all of the above have been going through a season all of their own - tick season. As the true love and whole universe of our beloved pups, it's our responsibility to provide our pups with the best possible care, and that includes protection from these pesky little bugs called ticks. What are ticks? Ticks are little parasites that feed on the blood of the hosts (your pups) and cause all sorts of problems from skin infection to tick fever to severe anaemia and even death. (in the video are the ticks from a 3kg Maltese on Frontline) Contrary to popular belief, keeping your dogs at home will not guarantee that they will be safe from ticks - ticks can use you as a courier to get to your dogs too! Treatment after a tick infestation can be long, complicated, and costly. ✔️Several sessions at the vet's to completely eradicate the ticks ✔️Care to return their skin to former glory ✔️Tests for tick fever and anaemia ✔️Pest control may also be required for your home to rid your home of ticks As the mantra goes, prevention is better than cure. 🔔There is now a 3-monthly flavoured chew/topical spot-on to keep your dogs free from such problems.
