Malocclusion in chinchillas is a serious dental condition where the teeth, particularly the incisors and molars, do not align or wear down properly. Since chinchillas have open-rooted teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives, improper alignment can lead to overgrowth, causing pain and other health issues.

Causes of Malocclusion
1. Genetics: Inherited dental deformities can lead to misalignment.
2. Diet: Lack of high-fiber foods (like hay) prevents natural tooth wear.
3. Trauma: Injury to the jaw or teeth can disrupt alignment.
4. Calcium Deficiency: Weak bones and teeth can contribute to dental issues.

Signs and Symptoms
• Drooling (often called “slobbers”)
• Difficulty eating or dropping food
• Weight loss
• Swelling around the jaw or face
• Eye discharge (due to root elongation affecting tear ducts)
• Reduced activity or signs of pain

Diagnosis

A vet will perform an oral examination, sometimes requiring sedation, and may use X-rays to check for tooth root overgrowth or misalignment.

Treatment Options
• Teeth Trimming: Regular filing or trimming of overgrown teeth by a vet.
• Tooth Extraction: In severe cases, problematic teeth might need removal.
• Pain Management: Anti-inflammatory or pain relief medications.
• Diet Correction: Offering more fibrous foods like hay and chew toys to encourage natural tooth wear.

Prevention
• Proper Diet: Unlimited access to high-quality hay (timothy, orchard grass) and safe wooden chew toys.
• Breeding Practices: Avoid breeding chinchillas with a history of malocclusion to reduce genetic risk.
• Regular Vet Check-ups: Early detection through routine dental exams.

Malocclusion is progressive and can become life-threatening if untreated, so early intervention is critical.

I have some chinchillas for urgent rehome as owners have health issues and prefer to give them up. Please contact me if you are keen on mosaic female, dark tan female, violet RPA female and beige Rpa male. Please love your pets and don’t give them up so easily. It’s highly traumatic for them to have to leave you, come to my shop and then go to another new home. It takes a lot of will to live on. To you they are just your pets. To them, you are their everything. Don’t break their little hearts. 💔 To date, those I have helped, managed to go to very good owners and some even luckier, found their forever best friends too!
