Is Too Much Love Hurting Our Dogs? 💔

As dog owners, our hearts overflow with love for our canine friends. But did you know that showering them with too much affection can actually be detrimental to their well-being?

1. Boundaries Matter: Dogs thrive on structure and routines. When we give them excessive affection without setting boundaries, it can lead to anxiety and confusion. A dog needs to know that their humans are in charge!

2. Overstimulation Can Be Stressful: Just like us, dogs can become overwhelmed. Constant petting, cuddling, or playtime can lead to overstimulation, which can manifest as stress or anxiety. 🚩

3. Behavioral Issues: Overindulgence can lead to undesirable behaviors. Dogs that aren’t taught limits may become demanding, possessive, or even aggressive. It’s essential to reinforce good behavior with training, not just love. 🆘

4. Health Implications: Excessive treats or rewards can lead to obesity and related health issues. Love should be balanced with a healthy lifestyle—both physically and mentally.

5. Quality Over Quantity: Instead of overwhelming them with constant affection, focus on quality moments. Engage in training, play, and bonding activities that stimulate their mind and reinforce your relationship.

Remember, being a responsible dog owner means understanding your dog’s needs and behaviors. Let’s strive for a balanced approach to love and care! 🫀🧡

I know many of dog trainers and school will not like this, but I will spill the tea. 🙋🏽‍♀️

While positive reinforcement is a popular training method, it’s essential to recognize that it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Let’s dive into why a balanced approach is crucial for a well-rounded, happy canine.

Let me be blunt here.
Since the day I remember I have never heard of any clients that came in my program to rehabilitate their dog, that their ex trainer ever put ANY importance to those specific subjects!

Teaching your dog commands is obedience. It has nothing to do with well behaved dog. Maybe they are trained on commands, but who knows if they are anxious while spinning in circles? Who knows if they are uncomfortable on heel position?

Do you really think you are creating a deeper bond with obedience classes? Do you feel fulfilled after class? Do you think your dog leaves the class happy and balanced?

If the answers are no, than you should never go back. And it is time for you to dive deeper.

Welcome!🦋🫀

As a dog behaviorist, I can’t stress enough how important it is to be mindful of your mental state before interacting with your dog. Our emotions and energy have a profound impact on our canine companions.

Dogs are incredibly perceptive animals and they can pick up on our stress, anxiety, and frustration. When we are feeling overwhelmed or tense, our dogs may mirror those feelings and exhibit behaviors such as barking, pacing, or even aggression.

On the other hand, when we approach our dogs with a calm state of mind, they are more likely to respond in a relaxed and obedient manner. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement and can sense when we are in a good headspace.

So before you pick up the leash, take a moment to center yourself. Practice deep breathing, visualize a peaceful scene, or engage in a quick mindfulness exercise. Your dog will benefit from your calm energy and you will enjoy a more harmonious and fulfilling bond with your canine friend.

Remember, a happy owner equals a happy dog!🫀

Now, before anyone loses their minds and starts chiming in about exercise, the walk, and all the other commands/activities...I’m well aware.
I’m not saying to exclude anything, but what I am pointing out is the extreme value that is contained in what is for many a less obvious and less understood command/activity.

A well trained and proofed Place command, with plenty of duration work (meaning extended periods of time in the command) offers a host of benefits that are largely missed.

Let’s look at a few.

People usually get me wrong when I tell them that they don’t have socialised dog.

“ but he is always saying hi to every dog that we meet on a walk!”

“But he always lets other people pet him and he seems to be enjoying it “

“But we are taking him to a dog park where everyone plays with each other”…

Thats BS. Sorry to spill the tea, but dog schools teach you wrong. Socialising is so much more than “dog parks” and “can I pet your dog”. It is your opportunity to step into your leadership position and be the best advocate to your dog! Be the leader, be the safe spot, be the conscious one of them all.

Bond with them. Understand them. Balance them. Guide them. 🤍
