The word ‘Ara’ comes from the Japanese word ‘Arai’ which means rough or crude and the word ‘Goke’ comes from the Japanese word ‘Uroko’ meaning scale. So, the name Aragoke literally translates as rough and uneven scales. Part of the appeal of this koi is the unevenness of the scales as well as their size so it is much less important than a regular Doitsu koi that the scales be neat and consistent – in many cases what makes a good Doitsu koi makes a bad Aragoke koi!

Koromo usually have blue crescent markings on the edges of scales within the red patches. Koi with distinct, blue crescents arranged in an orderly manner are highly valued. High quality Koromo such as this are tastefully charming -- the kind favored by Koi experts. The blue color of Koromo seems to gradually grow darker as the Koi grow older.

Hi Utsuri is a black koi fish with bright red patterns all over its body, head, and fins. It is another koi fish in the Utsuri mono subspecies. which is often called Utsuri for short. It covers three species of black carp. Each species has a different color accent, including Ki Utsuri, Hi Utsuri, and Shiro Utsuri.
Hi Utsuri were first bred in the late 1910s by breeding Ki Utsuri (black koi with yellow patterns) and Kohaku (white koi with red patterns). This pair is often used in breeding Showa koi. (black fish with red and white markings) which is one of the most popular koi fish and is in constant high demand. One of the most common color variations seen in this pairing is black fish with only red markings. which is a Showa koi fish that does not have white stripes.

It is unknown exactly when the first Hariwake koi was bred but we do know that the subvariety was created from a pairing of a Kohaku (a white koi with red patterns) and a Platinum Ogon (a metallic pure-white koi) to create a metallic Kohaku, called the Hariwake koi. We also know that the Platinum Ogon variety was first bred in 1947 by a breeder called Sawata Aoki and we know that a Hariwake koi was bred to a Shusui (Doitsu blue koi with red patterns along the side of the fish) to create the Doitsu Kujaku variety in the early 1960s. Therefore, we can conclude that the Hariwake must have been first bred between 1947 and the early 1960s. The most commonly accepted time frame is the 1950s.

One of the more interesting and attractive developments in recent years has been the modification and improvement of a popular variety known as the Kujaku (“peacock” in Japanese) The first Kujaku was created in 1960 by crossing a matsuba ogon and a hariwaki. The result was a metallic koi with reticulated scales and a pattern of yellow, orange, or various shades of red on a white background. The Kujaku became an instant hit with collectors. For show purposes, Kujaku is placed in the Hikarimoyo class, competing against other patterned metallics including hariwaki, kikusui, yamatonishiki (metallic sanke), and metallic bekko. Due to the added refinement of the reticulated scales, the Kujaku has a definite advantage over the other members of this class, and is most often selected as “best in class” for hikarimoyo.
