💥We've had an amazing week of adoptions! First up... Daniel and his family were looking for a calm dog who would be great with their young kids. They visited our shelter to meet a few of our dogs, and two especially touched their hearts: Ban and Sii. They couldn't decide, so we arranged a home trial. Ban went first, and Sii joined the next day. The dogs got along perfectly, so the family decided to adopt them both! 🎉🎉

🙏 A big thank you to this wonderful family for giving two dogs a much needed loving home. 🏠 We know Ban and Sii will be so happy... especially if they keep getting those treats! 😍

It was amazing to see a replica toy of Ban that they had bought before even meeting her. They were destined to meet! 💫

Our LCA team had a wonderful New Year's 'mookata style' dinner, celebrating everything we accomplished in 2024. 🎉 The year brought its share of challenges, but also incredible progress and positive changes for our rescue foundation. RIP Hing Hoy. 🖤
This morning, we received heartbreaking news that Hing Hoy, one of our shelter dogs, passed away. Hing Hoy had been in critical condition and under veterinary care after showing severe signs of illness.

When Hing Hoy was first brought to the hospital, she was weak, vomiting, refusing to eat, and in visible pain. Her blood test earlier this month revealed anemia, low platelet counts, and a blood parasite infection, which she was having treatment for. X-rays yesterday also showed a foreign object in her abdomen, and her prognosis was poor. We had planned to perform surgery to remove the mysterious foreign object once she became stable. The vet team worked tirelessly, providing IV fluids, antibiotics, and pain relief to stabilise her. However, her condition continued to deteriorate.

After her passing, a necropsy (autopsy) was performed to understand more about what was obstructing her abdomen. The results revealed severe infectious inflammation in the abdominal cavity, pancreas and both kidneys. Her gall bladder was larger than normal, and she had abscesses and necrosis in the liver tissue, and likely septicemia. The "foreign object" detected on the X-ray was identified as undigested food trapped in the stomach due to gastrointestinal inflammation.

The illness was likely caused by an abscess in the liver, which had progressed into systemic complications. The severe inflammation in her abdominal cavity sadly caused her death.

While we are devastated, we find some comfort knowing that she is no longer in pain.

Run free in heaven, Hing Hoy. You will be missed. 😔

🎅 Last week on boxing day, we celebrated our traditional annual 'Christmas Treats Day' with our shelter animals! It was so much fun handing out cooked hotdogs, chicken balls, boiled eggs, and other yummy snacks to our awesome 300+ dogs, puppies and cats. They were beyond excited!

This special day holds even more meaning this year as we remember LCA's co-founder, Ed Lee, who sadly passed away earlier this year. It was one of his favorite traditions, and we’re honored to carry it on in his memory. ❤️

A huge thank you to all our team members and volunteers who made the day extra special.

⚠️ A reminder as we get closer to the holidays. DO NOT feed dogs rawhide! ⚠️

Please think twice before buying these treats, and if your dog receives one as a gift, it’s best to throw it away. Rawhide chews may seem like a fun treat, but they can pose serious risks to your dog’s health.

Unfortunately, many of these so-called “treats” often lead to emergency vet visits, especially around the holidays. Most rawhide products are made from cattle or horse hides, and the process to make them involves harmful chemicals. First, the hides are soaked in toxic sodium sulfide to remove hair and fat. Then, they’re treated with additional chemicals to split the hides into layers, followed by hydrogen peroxide to make them look white and fresh while masking any rancid smell. After that, festive colors and glue are added to shape them into cute designs. Tests have even found traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium, and formaldehyde in these chews.

On top of the chemical concerns, rawhide is a major choking hazard and can cause serious intestinal blockages. When wet, the chews become slippery, making it difficult to grab if your dog starts choking. These risks are sadly more common than many people realize.

For your dog’s safety, it’s best to avoid rawhide entirely. Instead, try healthier, natural options like bully sticks, yak chews, or vet-approved dental treats. For dogs that love to chew, durable toys made from rubber or nylon are great alternatives. And while these options are safer, no chew is completely risk-free, so always supervise your dog while they enjoy their treats.

Keeping our pets happy and safe is what matters most. A little extra care can go a long way in protecting their health.

🏥 Following up on our previous medical update: Kat-Jang visited Dr. New on Friday. He has ongoing chronic skin inflammation and hyperpigmentation, with lesions primarily on his face. Blood tests for CBC, kidney, liver, and thyroid hormone levels all came back normal. His skin condition is likely caused by an autoimmune or allergic disease. He is now on new medications in the hope of controlling it.

Kat-Jang also has dental issues, including bad teeth and heavy tartar buildup. Additionally, Dr. New found three under-skin masses on his right hind leg, abdomen, and chest, which are now being closely monitored.

🐾 Three of our shelter dogs visited Dr. New today at FPHC. 🏥

● 𝗞𝗮𝘁-𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗴 has been dealing with persistent skin issues that haven't improved despite medication. He had full bloodwork done with normal results. We also tested his thyroid hormone level, and we are now waiting for the results. Chronic skin allergies, inflammation, and itching can be symptoms of thyroid issues. Kat-Jang also has itchy ears and eyes, which will be treated with his new medications.

● 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗮𝗺 and 𝗗𝘁𝘂𝗲𝘆 had their teeth checked today and underwent chest x-rays in preparation for dental surgery next week. They will have scaling and some teeth removed. Little Toom Tam's chest x-ray showed he has an enlarged heart, but his condition is safe enough to undergo anaesthesia.

Our little rescued puppies absolutely adore Ailada! They follow her everywhere. Being motherless, they rely on her to teach them right from wrong. With her gentle, calm nature, Ailada is the perfect role model, but she’s not afraid to put the pups in their place when needed.
