Happy Loy Krathong from Asian Elephant Projects & all the Saddle Off Projects! ✨🎊💧
Known as the festival of lights, Loy Krathong is being celebrated around Thailand tonight, and Chiang Mai is one of the best places to be for this special occasion. The tradition of floating krathongs (made from banana stalks and decorated with flowers) down the river symbolizes letting go of negative energy, washing away troubles of the past year and making wishes for the coming year. Thanks to everyone who has given food gifts in support of the elephants, which is greatly appreciated. Wishing everyone good fortune for the coming year.

Last week we delivered a pickup truck of bananas together with other fruits and vegetables to the elephants at Karen Elephant Home and Karen Elephant Serenity in Mae Wang, thanks to our kind supporters who gave food gifts to the elephants recently.
Dodo and Kham Meun smelled the fruit and arrived on the scene with a nice bundle of cornstalks tucked under their tusks, which they promptly dropped beside their platter for later. The feast included bananas, watermelon, pineapple, guava, corn, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin, prepared by Krieng Krai and the guests visiting Karen Elephant Home.
A few days ago at Karen Elephant Serenity, the elephants enjoyed a delicious Halloween themed fruit cake made by the team at the project, thanks to our amazing supporter, Kim. Heng Heng was especially excited to receive this treat, scooping up the rice base with her trunk and munching on the pumpkin wedges.
Deep in the jungle at Journey to Freedom, Honey pulls down a sapling with her trunk to snack on the leaves and medicinal bark.
Join this volunteer program for an amazing experience in the jungle with a family of five elephants enjoying life in their natural habitat and also learn about the Karen way of life.
We are currently looking for more people to volunteer at Journey to Freedom next week starting on Monday, November 4. If you are in Chiang Mai and are interested in spending time with a beautiful herd of elephants, book your volunteer trip @ www.asianelephantprojects.com/journey-to-freedom or contact us at [email protected] for more information about our half and one week volunteer programs.

At Sunshine for Elephants, Sri Prai has been spoiled with lots of fruit treats following the recent ordeal caused by the floods and the loss of her friend, Ta Mon. Understandably, she has been melancholy of late, but is still enjoying her food and spends her days foraging in the jungle.
Thanks to Kim for giving Sri Prai a watermelon feast and Tonya for giving her a platter of fruit and vegetables, along with all of our other kind supporters who have given food gifts in support of the elephants during these challenging times.
Currently, a new shelter is being built for Sri Prai, since the old shelter by the river was badly damaged during the floods. Sunshine for Elephants is still closed to visitors for now, but hopes to reopen again soon.

Under the thriving jungle canopy, the herd at Journey to Freedom effortlessly navigate the steep muddy slopes so familiar to them. It’s an amazing sight to watch such enormous animals move gracefully between the trees on hilly terrain.
We have recently opened a new half-week volunteer program at Journey to Freedom for visitors who don’t have time to volunteer for a whole week. Embark on an exciting 4 days / 3 nights adventure in the remote jungles of Northern Thailand, observing a close-knit herd of elephants in their natural habitat. As a volunteer, you will help to care for the elephants while gaining fascinating insights into their daily rituals and the traditions of the local Karen hill tribe people. Join this new volunteer program and support elephants living a more natural life.
Please note that volunteers joining the new half-week program will only be able to participate in the activities offered at Journey to Freedom from Monday to Thursday morning, and so will not be able to do all the activities that the one-week volunteers will do.
If you're traveling to Chiang Mai, we are looking for more volunteers for the weeks starting Monday, October 28, and Monday, November 4. Book your volunteer experience @ www.asianelephantprojects.com/journey-to-freedom

A few days ago, the teams from Majestic Elephant Project and Sunshine for elephants came to Elephant Nature Park to collect pickup trucks of food for their elephants, including watermelon, bananas, and sugarcane.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the kind people who gave food gifts to the elephants at the Saddle Off Projects around Chiang Mai affected recently by severe flooding. Thanks also to the team from Save Elephant Foundation - มูลนิธิอนุรักษ์ช้างและสิ่งแวดล้อม for their help in arranging the delivery and distribution of the elephant food. 🙏❤️🐘❤️🍌🍉
Dodo and Kham Meun hang out together peacefully, grazing on grass at Karen Elephant Home. The intimate relationship shared by these handsome bull elephant brothers is something special to behold.
During the recent floods, the bridge over the river at Karen Elephant Home was completely destroyed. The elephant's shelter flooded, the bank in front of the feeding platform was washed away, and part of their rice field was lost to the floods. Krieng Krai and the team at Karen Elephant Home have been working hard to build a new bridge, which has now been completed thanks to the support of Karen Elephant Connections.
With the new bridge finished, Karen Elephant Home is now open again to visitors and would greatly appreciate your support. Book your visit to meet Kham Meun and Dodo @ www.asianelephantprojects.com/karen-elephant-home

Boon Paeng drinks from the river’s edge, surveying the aftermath of the flood with debris strewn along the banks.
Majestic Elephant Project sustained significant damage during the recent floods, including the feeding area and the hut by the river where medicine and elephant food used to be stored. The team at Majestic Elephant Project has been busy cleaning, doing repairs at their project, and clearing the path where the elephants walk in the jungle. It will take time to gradually rebuild all the structures destroyed by the flood. The last photo shows the area by the river before the floods.
Thank you to everyone for your kind words of love and support for Kwan and her family at Sunshine for elephants after the loss of their beautiful senior elephant, Ta Mon. Kwan and her family would like to express their appreciation for the outpouring of kindness and sympathy at this tragic time and would also like to express their sincere gratitude to Saengduean Lek Chailert and the team from Save Elephant Foundation - มูลนิธิอนุรักษ์ช้างและสิ่งแวดล้อม for their dedicated support.
Thank you also to all of the volunteers, organizations, and individuals who have come to help and have provided overwhelming support since the catastrophic flooding at Elephant Nature Park. Restoration efforts at ENP following the severe flooding are well underway. Teams from many elephant sanctuaries around Thailand, including Samui Elephant Sanctuary, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, Pattaya Elephant Sanctuary, Samui Elephant Haven, and Karen Elephant Home, as well as numerous volunteers from across the country have been on-site helping to rebuild the park, providing elephant food, and other much needed support. Our deep gratitude to Lek and her team from Save Elephant Foundation & ENP, who worked tirelessly to save the lives of animals and continue to work to clean up the devastation left by the floods.
We are deeply saddened to share the heartbreaking news that Ta Mon, a beloved senior elephant in her 60s from Sunshine for Elephants, passed away on October 8, 2024.
When the river began to rise rapidly, floodwaters entered the elephant’s shelter. Ta Mon and Sri Prai were swiftly moved to higher ground on the mountain, away from danger. Understandably, both elephants were frightened and stressed by the ordeal. They spent time in the jungle, but once the floodwaters receded, they returned to the project due to concerns over possible landslides on the mountain. Ta Mon was walking slowly, showing signs of distress, and had little appetite, eating just a few bananas. The veterinary team treated her with fluids and medication, but despite their efforts, Ta Mon's condition rapidly deteriorated. During the night, she stood outside her shelter with her caretaker close by, eventually lying down and quietly taking her last breath.
Kwan and her husband, who had just lost their home to the floods, are devastated by Ta Mon's passing. In their grief, they reached out to Saengduean Lek Chailert for assistance. With no place to bury her at Sunshine for Elephants, Lek arranged for Ta Mon’s body to be moved and laid to rest at the Sky Walk Project. A monk performed a traditional Buddhist ceremony to honor her passing.
Kwan would like to thank Khun Lek and the team of doctors who came to treat Ta Mon for their care and unwavering support during these difficult times.
Ta Mon spent most of her life working in elephant riding, carrying tourists on her back day after day. In 2015, she was rescued from a trekking camp in Mae Wang and came to live at Sunshine for elephants. Though she arrived traumatized and suffering from digestive issues, her health improved over time, thanks to a special diet and the chance to live a more natural life. Ta Mon was a gentle but determined elephant who loved roaming the forest with her friend Sri Prai, foraging for bamboo, taking mud baths, and relaxing in the river.
We are grateful to Kwan and her husband for giving Ta Mon a peaceful and dignified life and caring for her with kindness and dedication in her retirement years. Thank you to everyone who visited and supported her during this time. Ta Mon touched the hearts of many and will always be remembered fondly. Rest in peace, beautiful Ta Mon—you will remain in our hearts forever.

We would like to update everyone on the situation at the Saddle Off Projects, which have been affected by the recent severe flooding in Chiang Mai.
At Sunshine for elephants, the new viewing platform built recently by the river, along with the project owner Kwan’s house, have been washed away, and parts of the elephant's shelter have been damaged. The elephants, Ta Mon and Sri Prai, are in the jungle high up on the mountain and are safe.
At Karen Elephant Home, the bridge over the river has been completely destroyed, the elephant’s shelter was flooded, more than half of the grass area in front of the feeding platform has been swept away, and part of the rice paddies has been flattened by the floodwaters. Kham Meun and Dodo are calm and safe on high ground on the mountainside.
At Majestic Elephant Project, the elephant feeding area and medicine room have been damaged, and sections of the path are covered with mud and debris. The pier by the river and the project owner Khun Tu’s house were also flooded and damaged. The elephants are safe on high ground in the forest, where they are being cared for by their mahouts. Due to a landslide, there is currently no signal, so we are unable to share any photos of the elephants at this time.
These 3 Saddle Off projects are closed to visitors at the moment due to the devastation caused by the flooding. The teams at these projects are working hard to clear the debris and rebuild areas damaged by the floods, but they may not be able to welcome guests for another 1-2 weeks.
If you would like to spend a day with elephants, our ethical elephant project, Karen Elephant Serenity, has not been affected by the flooding and is able to welcome visitors. You can book your visit at: www.asianelephantprojects.com/karen-elephant-serenity

Today, we send our heartfelt wishes of love and strength to Saengduean Lek Chailert on her birthday, during this incredibly difficult time of loss and devastation caused by the severe flooding at Elephant Nature Park.
Lek’s lifelong dedication to protecting Asian elephants and advocating for their welfare is nothing short of extraordinary. We are deeply grateful for her compassion, courage, and relentless efforts in rescuing elephants and countless other animals. Her dedication has made a lasting impact on the lives of elephants across Asia. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lek, along with the teams at Save Elephant Foundation, Elephant Nature Park, and the Saddle Off Projects affected by the tragic flooding.

It is with deep sadness that we must share the loss of Faa Sai and Ploy Thong following the catastrophic flooding at Elephant Nature Park.
Ploy Thong was rescued in 2018 from an elephant riding camp in Pattaya, having previously worked in the logging industry. She lived happily at ENP as a nanny to Sai Thong, Chaba, ChomPu, and Muay Lek, and had a profound bond with her dear friend Kabu. Despite her blindness, she lived harmoniously within her herd, who lovingly guided her throughout the park and ensured her safety. Tragically, Ploy Thong lost her herd during the flood, and despite the diligent efforts of her caretaker, she was swept away by the raging river.
Faa Sai, rescued in November 2007, arrived at ENP traumatised and extremely aggressive after enduring the cruelty of the phajaan. Over time, she began to heal and was eventually accepted into the Faa Mai herd as the big sister to Tong Jaan and Faa Mai, later becoming the junior nanny to Dok Mai and Dok Rak when they were younger. Known for her independence, Faa Sai often roamed the sanctuary, introducing herself to other elephants, such as Thong Ae’s herd, and playing on her own in the river.
During the flood, Faa Sai ventured close to the river despite the concerted efforts of our team to keep her safe, and tragically, she too was taken by the current.
Both Faa Sai and Ploy Thong were found approximately 1 km downstream from the park, having succumbed to drowning.
We deeply appreciate the outpouring of kind words and support during this time of mourning and crisis.

Over the past 24 hours, the situation with the flooding at Elephant Nature Park has worsened rapidly and roads are cut off in both directions.
Some of the Saddle Off Projects are also experiencing major flooding. Sunshine for Elephants, Majestic Elephant Project, and Care for Elephants are all flooded and closed to visitors. The elephants at these projects have been moved to higher ground and are all safe.
Karen Elephant Home in Mae Wang, south of Chiang Mai, has lost their bridge that just a couple of weeks ago stood high above the stream and the elephant’s shelters have been flooded. The elephant brothers, Kham Meun and Dodo, have been moved up the mountain and are safe.
Please send your thoughts and prayers to all the animals and the people working tirelessly to protect the elephants and so many other animals.
This year on World Animal Day, we would greatly appreciate your help to support the elephants at the Saddle Off projects during this difficult time. You can support the elephants by giving them a food gift @ www.asianelephantprojects.com/shop Thank you for your kind support.

Over the past week there has been an incredible amount of rain in Northern Thailand, including Chiang Mai, causing parts of the city to flood, and recently Elephant Nature Park is also experiencing serious flooding. Care for Elephants, Majestic Elephant Project and Sunshine for Elephants have also been affected by the rising river levels and are flooded. Thanks to everyone who is working hard to ensure the safety of the elephants and other animals.
Repost from Elephant Nature Park
Elephant Nature Park is flooded!
The river that flows through ENP has burst its banks, and we have been working tirelessly to evacuate our rescued animals to higher ground throughout the day.
This is the most severe flooding we have ever experienced, and unfortunately, the weather forecast predicts more heavy rain in the coming days.
We are doing everything we can to ensure every life is protected. Please keep our animals and teams in your thoughts and prayers.

Asian Elephant Projects was created out of a desire to improve the living conditions for Asian elephants involved in the tourist industry. We are dedicated to helping small, independent elephant tourism operators transition to ethical and sustainable programs which provide a better life for their elephants. By joining these projects, elephant owners agree to adhere to a comprehensive set of guidelines designed to ensure the welfare of the elephants in their care. In return, we provide knowledge and resources in support of these projects so that they generate a reliable income for elephant owners and benefit local communities.
We offer a range of ethical elephant tours in Thailand as well as in Cambodia. Guests join a small group for an unforgettable, intimate adventure observing elephants in beautiful natural surroundings. Watch elephants play, socialize, and forage in the jungle. The activities offered are sympathetic to natural elephant behavior - feed the elephants, walk with them in nature, bathe them, and watch them play in the mud. Our projects provide a home for elephants where they are well cared for and freed from an arduous life of elephant riding, performing tricks, and other unnatural behavior. Over 25 independent ‘Saddle Off’ projects are now providing a better life for these gentle giants.
The geographical locations of the projects include jungles, mountains and plains that change throughout the seasons. Available tours vary from challenging mountain jungle treks on foot with the elephants with white water rafting, to picturesque walks with the elephants at a comfortable pace, stopping along the way to watch the elephants forage on native plants.
Most of the projects offered have herds of 3 to 7 elephants, and limit guest numbers to 3 or 4 people per elephant. This helps to create a non-stressful environment for the elephants as well as a more intimate experience for our guests. The owners and staff at our projects share a commitment to the well-being of the elephants and to providing visitors with a safe and memorable experience.
We offer full day and half day tours as well as projects where visitors can volunteer for a week or more. Tours include local transportation, meals, qualified English-speaking guides, and rafting where available.
By joining our projects you are helping to create a demand for elephant tours that take into account the quality of the lives of the elephants and are based on compassion and empathy. To observe elephants doing what comes naturally, without fear of punishment, is an amazing experience.
Elephants are intelligent, highly social animals, and like us, experience a wide range of emotions. They deserve our respect, care, and appreciation of their right to live free of unnecessary suffering. Over 80 elephants are now enjoying a life worth living thanks to responsible, kind-hearted travelers choosing Asian Elephant Projects. Your support is essential to making this evolution in elephant tourism sustainable. Visit our website and book one of our ‘Saddle Off’ projects today to discover the amazing world of elephants.
