Please stop buying tortured, abused axolotls from unethical vendors/shops. You are not improving the lot of animals in any way by doing this; You are dooming countless others to torture and death.
I have said this in comments many times, but it just doesn't seem to sink in.
"Yes," you say, "but I am saving that one." No, I say; You are being a complete jerk. You are encouraging the evil a** who tortured that one to do it again and again.
I am triggered because I recently was told by a "breeder" that he has sold the last of his previous tortured clutch and is pairing his only two adults (of which he knows absolutely nothing) again. He hatched hundreds of eggs last time, and was proud that almost half of the babies he hatched survived past two weeks! He then gradually sold all of the survivors (and disposed of those that continued to die) over the next couple of months at trade shows and a local pet shop. He sold them in deli cups, but they were chewed up, so they were obviously kept together when not at a show.
This person told recent trade-show customers the animals were four months old (at two inches long) and to feed them dried bloodworms and tubifex worms.
This is what you're supporting when you "rescue" that axolotl.
This is what you should really do if you honestly want to help abused animals for sale; DO NOT BUY THEM. Inform the seller in no uncertain terms why you are not buying them. Be polite, but be direct. Offer guidance to the seller if you feel they are acting out of ignorance, or suggest ways they can get the guidance they need. If they are not receptive or come off as deliberate abusers, WARN OTHER PEOPLE.
While you're at it, spread the word; Axolotls should not be sold under 3+ inches without a disclaimer explaining risks and proper care of smaller juveniles (because in**ed and misfed axolotls may be unable to grow and survive beyond a couple of months old, or have other issues that cannot be identified before 3 months or so). They should have ALL of their toes, legs, gills, etc. (if ONE does not, the seller should be honest about the reason and apologetic. If MANY do not then WALK AWAY). They should come with a care sheet or at least a link to where to get one. If any of this is not the case WALK AWAY.
Please...
