Channel-billed Toucan
Ramphastos vitellinus

DESCRIPTION: The channel-billed toucan gets its name from the deep channel-like groove located on either side of the bill. Adults are black with red plumage below the tail and on its breast. It has golden yellow feathers on its throat which is surrounded by white feathers. The skin around its eye is coloured pale blue as well as the base of the bill. Their bills helps the bird to regulate its body temperature and is also used to attract mates. They have a huge bill that takes up about one-third of the length of its body, despite the beaks large appearance, their beaks are light and hollow. Channel-billed toucans makes calls that sounds like shrieks, they are high-pitched and loud. The bill has tiny serrations called tomial teeth that contains a long, narrow feather-like tongue that helps them to taste food. Although they spend alot of time on trees, they are not very good at flying, they travel mainly by hopping through trees.

SIZE: Head to tail 19 - 20 inches and their bill measures 5 - 6 inches. Females have shorter bills than males.
They can weigh 11 - 15 oz.

DIET: Fruits, nuts, berries but are known to eat insects, lizards and even small birds.

LIFESPAN: 15 - 20 years.

* Channel-billed toucan beaks are made of keratin like human hair and fingernails.

* The toucan is actually a relative of the woodpecker.

Ocelot
Leopardus pardalis

DESCRIPTION: Ocelots are members of the cat family. They are medium-sized cats with sleek, smooth, velvety, cream-coloured fur with brown and sometimes red markings bordered in black. They are slenderly built with rounded ears that have a single bright white spot on the back as well as two black stripes that line the side of the face from the eye. They have long canines that pierce into flesh of their prey and strong, sharp back teeth that enable them to strip meat from the bone. They have large retractable claws. Like other small cat species, they have strong vision and hearing. The ocelot is solitary and active mainly at night. They are not roaring cats, ocelots communicate with one another using soft meows which turn into loud yowls when looking for a mate. Ocelots have a raspy (rough) tongue, which can successfully remove meat from bones. Female ocelots bears young once every year and kittens (young ocelots) are fully independent at one year old.

SIZE: 3 - 4.5 ft in length and can weigh 18 - 40lbs. Males are generally larger than females.

DIET: Ocelots mainly consume small rodents but their diet also includes birds, iguanas, young deer, snakes and even fish and crabs.

LIFESPAN: 8 - 12 years.

Red-rumped Agouti
Dasyprocta leporina

DESCRIPTION: Red-rumped agoutis are medium sized rodents with course, glossy fur consisting of darker brown spots covering their upper body with a white stripe running down the center of their underside. They sit back on their hind legs, holding food with their front limbs while eating. The front feet have four toes and the back have three each. Agoutis take refuge in shaded covered areas such as logs near forested areas. Females breed twice a year and have 1-4 young (pups).

SIZE: 19-25 inches and can weigh 6.5 - 13lbs.
Females are generally larger than males.

DIET: Seeds, roots, fruits and vegetables. They also feed on insects.

LIFESPAN: 15 - 20 years.

*Red-rumped agouti can jump 6ft in the air.

*Agoutis are important seed disperses and one of the only animals that can crack the tough shell of the Brazil nut.

BLUE AND GOLD MACAW
Ara ararauna

DESCRIPTION: The Blue and Gold Macaw gets its name from its beautiful bright yellow and blue feathers. The wings and tail are blue while the under parts are golden yellow, it also has a greenish forehead, a white face and a black beak. They use their curved, powerful beaks to crush hard nuts and seeds. In order to avoid predators these birds nest high above the ground in trees laying only 2-3 eggs. Macaws are very social and are known to make loud noises.

SIZE: 2 - 3 ft and can weigh 2 - 3 lbs.

DIET: Nuts, seeds and fruits. Sometimes they consume clay from riverbanks to help them digest toxins from unripe seeds/fruits they may have eaten.

LIFESPAN: 60 - 70 years but can live up to 80 years.

*Macaws tongue are dry and scaly and have a bone in them.

*Blue and Gold Macaws mate for life. Pairs will fly so close to each other that their wings almost touch.

GREEN IGUANA
(Iguana iguana)

DESCRIPTION: iguanas are a very large lizard that can be found mostly on trees. They can vary in colour from bright green to dull or dark green, large males however are dull grey,gold or tan. They have strong jaws with razor sharp teeth and sharp tails, which make half their body length and can be used as whips to drive off predators.

SIZE: 5ft - 7ft (head to tail) and can weigh up to 20 lbs.

DIET: iguanas are mostly herbivores but can be seen eating small insects and eggs.

LIFESPAN: 10 - 20 years.

*Iguanas can survive a fall of 40 - 50ft.

*Their tails can break off if grabbed but can grow a new one.
