Rainy season is in full effect, and with this has come flooding in many areas of Trinidad. Flood waters pose a special risk to pets, with various disease causing organisms being carried in the swells. Two diseases that can be transmitted this way are pythiosis and leptospirosis, both of which can be potentially fatal to your furry companions.

In light of this, we're advising all dog owners to keep your pets away from flood waters as best as possible and ensure that their drinking water is clean. Vaccination is also advised, whether puppy vaccines or annual boosters, as this can help protect against leptospirosis.

Stay safe everyone!

Please be aware of which pets foods are being recalled to ensure that your pet is being fed the very best!

US company Midwestern Pet Foods has recalled five of its products after it caused the deaths of over 70 animals and illnesses in others. On December 30, the company recalled its Sportmix products. As we get ready to say a relieved, “good bye, and good riddance” to the year 2020, remember our Furry Friends who do not enjoy the fireworks as much as we do. Whether or not you have decided to sedate your pet(s) this evening, here are a easy few tips to safeguard them and reduce the possibility of you needing to visit us on Saturday for fear-induced, accidental injuries.

1. Keep dogs and cats inside in a room; close the windows and curtains to muffle the outside noise. For larger animals that cannot stay inside a bedroom/bathroom, create a safe and comfortable confined space where they cannot injure themselves or escape into the night.

2. Play loud music or turn the TV volume to loud in the area your pet will be housed.

3. Do not tie frightened dogs outside on a leash/chain (they may break free or strangle themselves trying to escape)

4. Do not allow dogs to run freely in the yard during the fireworks as they may try to escape and injure themselves.

5. Keep checking on your pets during the course of the evening (especially those who have been given sedatives).

6. Do not leave sedated animals alone with deep bowls of drinking water. Use a shallow dish to prevent them falling asleep in it by accident.

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable end to the season, may next year be filled with light, love and prosperity. - The Team

So, Santa has brought your family a puppy or kitten for Christmas. What’s next?

1. Vaccination is so important to protect against a number of common diseases here in Trinidad, including parvo and distemper.

2. Deworming is a must, as these nasty critters can steal much needed nutrients from your little ones, slowing down their growth and weakening their immune systems.

3. Treating for ticks and fleas. In addition to being very irritating to your pet, ticks and fleas can also transmit diseases like tick fever.

We'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our family to yours!

In light of the holidays, our clinic will be CLOSED from Thursday the 24th December to Sunday the 27th December. We will be open again on Monday the 28th. Also, we will be CLOSED on Friday the 1st of January 2021.

Please remember to be careful of what yummy foods you may give to your pets this Christmas, making sure to avoid giving them any chocolate, raisins, onions or garlic as these are toxic to dogs and cats. Also, we do not advise giving your animals any hard, left over bones as these may get lodged In their throats or sharp ends may cut their digestive tract.

Today we got a visit from possibly our smallest client to date! This little girl came for a general checkup after being found in the road near a local business. We urge you to consider neutering your cats to prevent further homeless kittens like this one. Basil is currently being fostered by some fourth year vet students until she can find her forever home 🏠

Did you know that adult dogs require a yearly booster vaccine? The vaccination process isn't only helpful to build an initial immune response in puppies, but also to maintain that protection as your dog ages. This gorgeous girl also came in for her recommended yearly blood work, to ensure that her organs are functioning as they should! This too is recommended in older dogs, as similar to humans, as they age their organs work less efficiently.
