Mass Rabies Vaccination Drive in Sambasha Ward
In a remarkable collaboration, ASPA and the Network for Animals (NFA) recently conducted a mass rabies vaccination drive in Sambasha Ward, Arusha DC. This initiative aimed to address rabies, parasite infestations, and overpopulation among the dogs and cats in the region.
The drive covered Ilkisongo Sub-village, Ilkiding’a Village, Sambasha Village, and Timbolo Sub-village.
During the intervention, at least 208 dogs and 12 cats received vaccinations and were dewormed. Additionally, 13 dogs (8 males and 5 females) were neutered and spayed.
The intervention encountered several challenges, particularly regarding tethering conditions and signs of malnutrition. Many dogs were found tethered with nylon materials and steel chains with padlocks, which are detrimental to their health.
Numerous animals exhibited rough coats due to external parasites and signs of malnutrition, highlighting the need for improved nutrition and care. Despite these challenges, the intervention was largely successful and highlighted the ongoing need for such initiatives.
Moving forward, we propose the following:
- Regular Clinics: Conduct regular veterinary clinics to ensure continuous animal care and support.
- Education Programs: Implement educational programs for owners on proper animal care, nutrition, and humane tethering practices.
- Resource Allocation: Secure more resources to ensure sufficient vaccines and medical supplies for future interventions.
Thank you Network for Animals for your unwavering support, which made this intervention possible. Despite the challenges, the collaboration between ASPA and NFA has significantly impacted the welfare of the animals in Sambasha Ward.
On the day of the activity, we observed over 100 dogs being turned away due to insufficient vaccines, highlighting the need for more resources and subsequent clinics.
