Mass Rabies Vaccination Drive in Sambasha Ward

In a remarkable collaboration, ASPA and the Network for Animals (NFA) recently conducted a mass rabies vaccination drive in Sambasha Ward, Arusha DC. This initiative aimed to address rabies, parasite infestations, and overpopulation among the dogs and cats in the region.

The drive covered Ilkisongo Sub-village, Ilkiding’a Village, Sambasha Village, and Timbolo Sub-village.

During the intervention, at least 208 dogs and 12 cats received vaccinations and were dewormed. Additionally, 13 dogs (8 males and 5 females) were neutered and spayed.

The intervention encountered several challenges, particularly regarding tethering conditions and signs of malnutrition. Many dogs were found tethered with nylon materials and steel chains with padlocks, which are detrimental to their health.

Numerous animals exhibited rough coats due to external parasites and signs of malnutrition, highlighting the need for improved nutrition and care. Despite these challenges, the intervention was largely successful and highlighted the ongoing need for such initiatives.

Moving forward, we propose the following:

- Regular Clinics: Conduct regular veterinary clinics to ensure continuous animal care and support.

- Education Programs: Implement educational programs for owners on proper animal care, nutrition, and humane tethering practices.

- Resource Allocation: Secure more resources to ensure sufficient vaccines and medical supplies for future interventions.

Thank you Network for Animals for your unwavering support, which made this intervention possible. Despite the challenges, the collaboration between ASPA and NFA has significantly impacted the welfare of the animals in Sambasha Ward.

On the day of the activity, we observed over 100 dogs being turned away due to insufficient vaccines, highlighting the need for more resources and subsequent clinics.

As animal lovers, this heartwarming scene captures our attention! In Oldonyosambu Ward, at a water point, our hosts call 'Kandasii' in their native tongue, animals come together to drink.
We are delighted to see donkeys being well cared for as they drink water before carrying water cans back home. Ensuring donkeys have access to water is essential for their welfare and highlights the community's commitment to these hardworking animals.

In the heart of the Lengijave Ward in Arusha DC, amidst the rolling hills and lush greenery, there was a small homestead belonging to Karani Latimi. It was here that the young foal, factiously named Loi (in long form Loishooki), which means gift in native Maasai tongue, found himself under the care of his loving owner after the tragic loss of his mother.

Loi's mother had valiantly defended him against a pack of marauding hyenas, sacrificing herself to ensure his safety. Left at just two months of age, Loi faced an uncertain future. Still, with Karani's nurturing hand, he flourished.

As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, Loi grew strong and healthy under Karani's watchful eye. His golden coat gleamed in the sunlight, and his playful spirit brought joy to everyone around him. But despite the care and attention he received, Loi still carried the weight of his mother's loss in his heart (Guessing).

During one of his explorations around the homestead, Loi stumbled upon a young calf named Lucky factiously. Lucky, was a curious creature, with wide, innocent eyes and a gentle disposition. Instantly drawn to each other, Loi and Lucky forged a bond that would soon become inseparable.

Together, they would roam the fields and pastures, chasing and playing with each other. Lucky became Loi's constant companion, his loyal friend through thick and thin. With Lucky by his side, Loi found comfort and solace, the warmth of their friendship easing the pain of his mother's absence.

Karani watched with delight as the friendship between Loi and Lucky blossomed. He marveled at how the two young animals seemed to understand each other without the need for words, their bond growing stronger with each passing day.

As Loi celebrated his seventh month of life, Karani smiled proudly at the sight of the foal he had raised with such care and affection. "You're growing up nicely, my boy," he said, patting Loi's mane affectionately. "And you've found yourself a wonderful friend in Lucky."

And so, in the tranquil beauty of Lengijave Ward, the friendship between Loi and Lucky flourished, a testament to the enduring power of companionship and the bonds that unite us all.

INTER-SCHOOL PEER LEARNING EVENT PROMOTES ANIMAL WELFARE AND HUMANE EDUCATION

The Arusha Society for the Protection of Animals (ASPA) proudly facilitated an inter-school peer learning event aimed at sharing and exchanging experiences and innovations on animal welfare and humane education. This engaging event was hosted by Wema Primary School in Arusha city council, with enthusiastic participation from Moshono Primary School and Moshono Secondary School as peer guests.

Students presented animal welfare-related issues through a variety of creative mediums, including songs, poems, drama, dance, and hand painting. These presentations were not only entertaining but also educational, providing a dynamic platform for students to teach their peers about the importance of animal welfare.

One of the highlights of the event was the students dressing up as donkeys to portray their behaviors and the injustices they often face. This imaginative approach vividly illustrated the need for humane treatment of animals, reinforcing the vision that everyone should be aware of and advocate for animal welfare.

Additionally, the artistry on display was impressive, with beautifully hand-drawn images of donkeys that captured the attention of all attendees.

These artworks not only showcased the students' talents but also served as powerful visual messages about the importance of treating animals with kindness and respect.

The main goal of the event was to foster a collaborative learning environment where students could share cross-cutting issues related to animal welfare. By promoting awareness among community members, the event aimed to cultivate a more compassionate attitude towards animals.

The inter-school peer learning event was a resounding success, reflecting the commitment of our young students to animal welfare and humane education. Their creativity and dedication highlighted the potential for future generations to make a significant impact in promoting the humane treatment of animals.

Donkey Clinic at Mgusu makes a lasting Impact

In the village of Mugusu, Geita ASPA, with the support from its partner, embarked on a mission to provide vital care and support to the hardworking donkeys in Mgusu gold mine.
Through a series of targeted activities, We aimed to improve the health and welfare of these overlooked animals.

One of the key activities conducted was the deworming of 208 donkeys. This crucial task ensured the donkeys' bellies remained healthy and free from harmful parasites, contributing to their overall well-being.

During the clinic, our team observed a marked improvement in the donkeys' health, with many sporting shiny coats and displaying ideal body conditions compared to previous visits.

This positive change was a testament to the effectiveness of our interventions through support from our partners and the dedication of our team.

However, we also encountered challenges, including cases of Laminitis disease among some donkeys. Prompt action was taken to provide pain relief drugs, multivitamins, antibiotics and expert wound dressing to alleviate their suffering and promote healing.

Additionally, ASPA addressed wounds caused by various factors such as identification marking, biting, cutting and improper treatment by farmers.

Each wound received meticulous attention and care, ensuring the donkeys' comfort and preventing further complications.

Another significant activity focused on the use of packsaddles. We have observed that some donkeys were still carrying loads incorrectly, leading to discomfort and strain.

Through education and guidance, We instructed donkey owners on proper packsaddle usage, promoting the donkeys' well-being and longevity.

Overall, Our activities at the Mgusu left a tangible impact on the health and welfare of the donkeys.

By providing essential care, addressing challenges, and empowering donkey owners with knowledge, ASPA continues to make a difference in the lives of working animals and their communities.

ASPA Empowers Future Animal Health Providers through Hands-On Donkey Training at LITA Tengeru

In a transformative initiative aimed at shaping the future of animal healthcare, Arusha Society for the Protection of Animals (ASPA) teamed up with Livestock Training Agency Tengeru Campus to deliver an engaging training program on donkey behavior and handling.

The initiative was Led by ASPA's esteemed veterinarian, Dr. Lazaro
The two-day training session, held in the campus recently, proved to be a pivotal learning experience for all involved. The first day commenced with insightful office discussions among staff members, laying the groundwork for the practical sessions to follow. On the second day, students eagerly immersed themselves in real-life scenarios, gaining hands-on experience in handling donkeys and mastering effective communication techniques.

Key Insights:
The training underscored the significance of practical sessions in equipping future animal health providers with the essential skills needed to interact with diverse animal populations. Students discovered the importance of understanding donkey behavior and treatment methods, recognizing the pivotal role these animals play in communities.

Path Forward:
ASPA remains committed to nurturing the next generation of animal health professionals. Plans are underway to conduct additional practical sessions following the holiday break in April 2024, ensuring continued skill development and readiness among students to serve as trusted animal health providers within their communities.
ASPA extends heartfelt gratitude to LITA Tengeru for their collaboration and enthusiasm in embracing this transformative initiative. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for both animals and communities alike.

Kindness for Donkeys: A Study of Animal Welfare in Mirongoine Market

In Arusha, where a captivating city meets, lies Mirongoine Market - a place teeming with various activities and where the well-being of working animals takes precedence.
As the warmth of the sun cast its golden glow over the market, our team delved into the workings of the lives of the beloved donkeys that tread the paths of Mirongoine with determination.
The initial joy was heartening - donkeys resting under shades, water readily available for them to drink, a sign of a community devoted to their welfare.
However, amidst this pleasant environment, we encountered challenges. Donkeys were being deprived of food as they walked, and our eyes witnessed many of them with mouths and eyes covered with sacks.
The donkey owners explained that this was a measure to protect them from eating corn along the way.
Furthermore, the tethering of donkeys in the market posed another challenge.
Here, we call upon you, our friend, to support our cause.
We seek your assistance for our mission to provide shades for donkeys in Mirongoine, where the demand is high.
The market is home to over 2000 donkeys, yet the available shades can only accommodate 750.
Additionally, the water infrastructure falls short of meeting the needs of the donkeys present.
Together, we can improve the lives of Mirongoine's donkeys. Join us in these efforts to bring about change, and let's paint a beautiful picture of this market - one filled with kindness and understanding for our four-legged companions.
