Sterilization of our latest rescues happened today at our sanctuary. Today Dr. Zacharia worked teaching student vet Shafie on surgeries procedures. Thank you Animal-Kind International for supporting this project!
We missed International Dog Day. Apparently, it was yesterday. So a day late we give you: Binti and Soldier. 100% Africanis (also know as a Zulu Dog, also known as what you get when humans don't breed dogs and let them do their own thing for thousands of years)! Their descendants are 5,000 years old and stem from the Nile Delta when Egyptians brought dogs into Africa. Things we've learned in the last 2 years!

Two females and one male are being treated for severe mange and malnutrition at our Lake Zone Animal Sanctuary. We will begin looking for adoptive homes once they are healthy and healed. These 2 puppies got dewormed, treated for mange, and vaccinated today! They will remain at our volunteer's home until they are old enough for the sanctuary or, hopefully, get adopted!!! Thank you Animal-Kind International for helping make this rescue happen!!!
Thanks to Animal-Kind International ... these 2 sweeties are hanging at our sanctuary for the week. They will be treated for mange, sterilized, vaccinated, dewormed, and returned to their home on the streets where they will rejoin their healthier street dog pack. If for some reason they are not strodeformed, or not extended mange treatment, they will remain at the sanctuary until a home is found for them.

One year ago TODAY we hosted our first spay & neuter clinic in Mwanza. In the last year, we have helped vaccinate thousands of dogs in our area against rabies, sterilized over 500 dogs, and helped start Mwanza's first ever dog sanctuary for medically fragile street dogs. We have also assisted our local vets in writing grants to help the working donkeys in our area. Let us all keep striving to live righteous lives!!!

Animal-Kind International's 7th annual Africa-Based Animal Welfare Organization Grant Program supports animal care rescue protection and advocacy organizations.
One of our very first rescues, Mellie, one of the original Bwiru 5, found a home this week! We are sad to see him leave us after a year in our care ... but grateful he has a safe home. It also opens up space at our sanctuary for a new street dog in need! We miss you already Mellie!!! Our 500th dog in 12 months was sterilized last month by our team of local vets!!! Today we awarded the owner with a bag of dog food, and a new chain/collar. CONGRATULATIONS to Lake zone animal welfare organization-Lazawo vets and THANK YOU African Street Dog Rescue donors for your continued donations and support!
**UPDATE** Sadly, our team of vets arrived too late. The donkey we came for had been sold for slaughter as he was no longer useful to the village. We are so sad to share this devastating news. We were so looking forward to helping heal and get the rest he deserved.
EMERGENCY! DONATIONS NEEDED!!! This poor donkey was working in the mines and exposed to chemicals that left him severely burned. He was then abandoned in the streets by his owner. Our team of vets is ready to rescue and rehabilitate him. We will then move him several hours West to a donkey sanctuary. PLEASE donate to our current GoFundMe posted in the comments below. All funds raised from today on will go toward his rescue, medical treatment, and rehoming. Estimate of cost is around $700.

Another good Samaritan called our vets with reports of an abandoned puppy yesterday. We are maxed out and can't take any more! We will be focusing on adoption within our local community, spreading the word about our new sanctuary space. Hopefully some forever families will step forward to give these beautiful puppies a good home! 🏡 🐕 🐶

A recent outbreak of rabies in Shinayanga has left 1 person dead and many dogs at risk. Our Lake zone animal welfare organization-Lazawo team will respond to this crisis to vaccinate 2,000 dogs in Shinyanga and the surrounding villages. Thank you SPCA International for the financial donation to make this happen.
Meet Princess! She came to us last month after being beaten unconscious in the streets. You may remember her from a previous post where she sat in her kennel, shaking in fear, a large wound across her forehead? She is now healed up and the most friendly, sweet girl! How these street dogs forgive humans so easily I'll never understand - yet here she is - wanting only love and cuddles! She is looking for a forever home where she will be spoiled rotten!

Wolfy is doing great after 2 days in our volunteers care! He has had his nails trimmed, received antibiotics, been bathed, fed, and spoiled! His friendly, sweet personality is starting to shine through! He's so obedient - perhaps too much so. We fear he has never had autonomy or freedom. We are giving him autonomy now ... letting him come to us when he wants, and walk away when he wants. Today we cut out matted hair for over an hour until he politely (in his own way) told us he'd had enough. So we stopped. Middle of the night rescue last week after 5 puppies were reported abandoned in the bushes in a sack! Grateful they were left alive and grateful someone had our number to call for help!!! All 5 are doing well and with one of our volunteers.

STAR NEWS covered the Lake zone animal welfare organization-Lazawo and African Street Dog Rescue clinic yesterday! Education = more informed population = change!
SPCA International with African Street Dog Rescue Street Dog Rescue and Lake zone animal welfare organization-Lazawo street dog clinic in the St Augustine University area today. Over 50 dogs were spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies, and tagged. These dogs are now safe from being culled and the over-population of dogs in this area will decrease.

In Tanzania, an ear tag means "don't shoot me" ... All of the dogs at our spay and neuter clinics will leave with an ear tag to prove they are fixed. This helps government officials to recognize them easily and leave them alone during culling sessions.
