Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue

Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue Mbwa Wa Africa is a safe haven for injured and sick animals. We run a Rescue Centre as well as a Veterinary Clinic. As an NGO, we rely on YOUR help!🐾

Our first priority is to find loving and forever homes for the rescued dogs. Secondly, to inform about our work, increase awareness of the situation of the stray dogs and reach out to people, who are willing to offer help of any kind. We started off with building 5 kennel to accommodate the dogs and puppies we kept on finding and couldn't fit into our house - occupied by our 8 rescues already- any

more, until they would be recovered and ready to make a new owner happy. These 7 kennel by now are sometimes the temporary home for up to 35 dogs and several cats...

🎄 Advent Calendar ~ Day 7: Gratitude 🎄

Today we want to take a moment to appreciate our incredible shelter team. 💛

From dog walkers and caretakers Amoni, Maiko, Elisa, Gifty, Timothy, and Ibrahim, to our cleaning hero Sneda, and cat caretaker Naomi, every single one of them pours their heart into the care of our animals every day. 🐾

Amoni and Maiko have been with us for over ten years, witnessing the journey from a small shelter in a garden to the big rescue centre we are today. Every team member loves our animals dearly, tending to each of their needs, from bandaging and medicating to playing and cuddling. With patience, kindness, and skill.

Caring for so many animals, especially our disabled dogs, is a hard job, but these are the people our animals trust the most. They bring comfort, safety, and love to each day at the shelter. 💕

On this day of gratitude, we say a huge thank you to our team. You embody the spirit of the season, and your dedication makes a real difference in the lives of so many animals. 🎅✨

It is not easy to find true animal lovers in a country where animals are generally discarded and are not a focus of society. So we are truly lucky to have these amazing people around us, that keep our shelter running, every single day of the year.

🎄 Advent Calendar ~ Day 6 🎄

Today it’s all about Paddy and his biggest wish is simple: SNACKS. Always!!! 🍪🐶

Our Paddy was first spotted on a field by one of our vaccination teams back in February 2023. His eyes were damaged beyond repair, probably from the venom of a spitting cobra. He was wandering around scared, confused and utterly helpless.

Catching him was not easy. Paddy was terrified, disoriented, and trying to survive in a world he could no longer see. Once we finally managed to get hold of him, we brought him straight to the Gongo Centre. The only option to save him from pain was to remove both eyes.

Paddy is a big, strong dog who likely lived a very independent life before losing his sight. At first he wanted nothing to do with us, he kept distance, stiff and unsure. But slowly, day by day, his walls came down. First we were allowed to touch him (with lots of treats involved 😅). Then he began venturing out of his cage. And step by step, he grew more confident.

Today, when Paddy hears us approaching, his tail starts wagging, he comes running, and he proudly demands belly scratches and whatever snacks we (hopefully) have in our pockets.

Paddy now spends his days confidently roaming the rescue centre, even though the layout has changed completely over the years, he always adapts. He follows staff around during feeding, checks in on the cats, and greets visitors like a true gentleman.

He has truly found his place.
He is the undisputed boss of the holding kennels, a favourite among volunteers, and a beloved resident who charms absolutely everyone who meets him.

✨ Paddy wishes for snacks, the more, the better!

We are happy to share that we’ve added two brand new runs to our rescue and they were very urgently needed! With around 110 dogs currently in our care, space to run, play, and just be a dog was becoming tight. These new runs give our furry friends room to stretch their legs, chase each other, and enjoy some well-deserved freedom. 🐶💨

A huge heartfelt Thank You to our long-time supporters and sister charity , who made this possible! ❤️ They have helped us grow in so many ways over the years, from building our shelter, cattery, quarantine and isolation areas, to our beautiful new clinic. And they continue to support us as we improve and expand our facilities bit by bit.

We know we can’t keep growing endlessly. Our number of dogs has been more or less steady for over a year now, and saying no to new rescues in need is one of the hardest parts of what we do. 💔 But for now, we’re so grateful to have created more space for the dogs already in our care, giving them the freedom and happiness they deserve.

Thank you, Four Steps to Freedom, for helping us make life better for so many dogs! 🐾💛

🎄 Advent Calendar ~ Day 5 🎄

Today’s star is Elmo, and his Christmas wish is something practical that he’d love to share with all his friends:
✨ new water bowls for our newly finished runs, so everyone can enjoy their extra space in comfort. 💧🐾

We first met Elmo during one of our vaccination campaigns. His owner told us he hadn’t been able to walk for 4 months and that he didn't know how to properly care for him. He said, if he could walk again, he could also come back, but a paralised dog can not live in a remote village with no veterinary care on hand.would Sadly, walking was not going to be possible for Elmo, he was most likely born with misformed back legs… and so he became part of our resident pack, where he is loved exactly as he is. ❤️

And what a dog he is!

Elmo is playful, lively, and full of pure zest for life.
He’s quick and confident in his wheelchair, zooming around like he’s been doing it all his life. He loves to explore, sticks his nose into every adventure he can find, and approaches new things with curiosity and courage.

Despite everything he has gone through, Elmo remains a bright, brave, and incredibly smart little fighter, the kind who reminds us every day what resilience looks like.

If you’d like to make Elmo’s wish come true, you can find the link to our wishlist in our story or linktree. 🎁💛

The past few days have been exciting for us at Mbwa Wa Africa. We just completed a mini spay–neuter campaign, the very first one in our brand-new clinic! 🐾💛

Together with our wonderful vet volunteers Kathi, Isabella, and Aurélie, and our hardworking team Anna, Naftal and Haika, we put our new clinic to the test. They spayed and neutered dogs from our surrounding community, working hand in hand, table to table.

Among the goals of our new clinic: expand our spay–neuter efforts massively in the years to come.
With a large surgery hall offering space for 7 full surgery tables, plenty of room to move, and a setup designed specifically for high-volume, efficient work, this place was made for campaigns.

These past 3 days were the first time we ran the clinic campaign-style, collecting dogs from the area and performing surgeries back to back. This mini campaign was a trial run, a chance to see if everything flows the way it should, if the setup works under pressure, and what fine-tuning we still need.

And even though there were some hiccups, in the end we are happy with the outcome and proud of every dog we can send home happy and healthy. ✨
Seeing the space come alive with teamwork, skill, and compassion felt like a dream long in the making finally turning into reality. Taking some learnings and adjustments with us.

All of this is preparing us for something big:
Our upcoming major campaign with WVS this January!
And now we know, we’re ready. Or as ready as you can ever be before hundreds of dogs arrive!

Here's to the first of many. 🐶❤️

🎄 Advent Calendar ~ Day 4 🎄

Today it’s all about Silla, and her Christmas wish is one she would love to share with her friends:
✨ new collars ✨

In September 2018, a tiny 6-week-old puppy was brought to us. Her hind legs were stiff, and she had no movement in her hips at all.

At first, we hoped that physio, good food and lots of care would help her improve, but nothing changed. An X-ray finally showed the truth: Silla had been born with severe deformities of her legs and hips.

But Silla herself? She didn’t let that stop her for a second. Full of puppy energy, she invented her own way of moving, sliding and hopping around faster than you’d imagine.

After 4 months her stiff legs began limiting her too much, and we decided that a double amputation would give her the best life. And Silla proved us right:
One day after surgery she was up, moving, and happy, as if nothing had ever slowed her down.

Today, Silla is one of our absolute superstars:
💛 always friendly
💛 always joyful
💛 always ready for cuddles
💛 and an incredibly skilled wheelchair user

Seeing her navigate the forest “off-road”, through streams, shrubs, and even over logs, is simply breathtaking. She doesn’t see limitations. She just sees life.

Silla can be a little shy with strangers at first, but only for a moment. Her loving and affectionate nature shines quickly. ❤️

If you’d like to make Silla’s day (and her friends’ too), you can gift them some beautiful new collars.

🎄 Advent Calendar ~ Day 3 🎄

Today it’s Malvi’s turn, and his Christmas wish is simple but full of joy:
✨ yummy chewing sticks ✨

We were contacted about a paralyzed dog sitting in a sewer in Arusha. Six went out to search for him, and after some time he finally found a lonely, sad-looking dog, sitting all by himself, abandoned and waiting for help. 😔

Six brought him straight to our rescue centre, where we gave him water, a good meal, and finally safety. Malvi’s wounds were deep, and we can only imagine how long he had been down there, dragging himself around and fighting to survive. 💔

We believe he was hit by a vehicle and simply left there. People had passed by him every day… yet no one helped.
To the person who finally took action and reached out to us, asante sana. 🙏

Despite everything he has gone through, Malvi has remained a happy dog with the kindest soul. He now fits perfectly into our mismatched disabled group, spending his days playing, sunbathing, relaxing, and enjoying the peace he deserves.

And the best news? Malvi has even regained some function in his back legs, he can push himself up and is getting stronger. ❤️

If you’d like to make Malvi’s day, he would be so happy about some tasty chewing sticks.

🎄 Advent Calendar ~ Day 2 🎄

Today it’s Akili’s turn to make a Christmas wish and what he would love most is a Kong toy for enrichment! Enrichment keeps his clever mind busy, and Akili is one of the smartest boys we know.

Akili came to us in March 2019. Someone had called Jens to say there was an injured dog they had been feeding and “taking care of” for three months. But when Jens arrived in Arusha, he found Akili dragging himself through a ditch next to a busy road, terrified, exhausted, and unable to use his hind legs.

No wonder… the people told us he had been hit by a motorcycle.

Since then, Akili has been paralyzed. One of his hind legs was so badly damaged it had to be amputated; the other he sometimes still uses for stabilisation. But if you think this slows him down, think again.

Akili is a master of moving on his two front legs. He walks, runs, and maneuvers like he has always done it this way. And in his wheelchair? He is faster than the motorcycles, as we once discovered firsthand! He loves his long walks and doesn’t shy away from any hill. If he could, he would probably climb Mount Kilimanjaro without hesitation.

He is loving, attention-seeking and could happily spend all day receiving ear scratches.

His name Akili means “mind,” and you can truly see it, he thinks, observes, understands. A very special character who we love derlry.

If you’d like to grant his Christmas wish, a Kong toy would make this incredible boy very happy. ❤️🎁

We are heartbroken over a loss we were not prepared for, our gentle old boy Rombo.💔

Rombo was with us for exactly two years and three days. He was found in Moshi, paralized on the street. He was malnourished, suffering from mange… and worst of all, Rombo had almost given up. Almost.

Because in his eyes, there was still a small flame, hope, softness, a will to keep going. And Rombo proved to us just how strong that flame was.
With physio, care, and his own incredible determination, he started to use his back legs again. First tiny movements, then wobbly steps, then little moments of standing on his own. Every step felt like a miracle. ❤️

But last week, everything changed. Overnight, Rombo developed a massive abscess. It burst, leaving a deep wound, and he was placed on rest and medication. But something felt wrong, he was far weaker and more exhausted than he should have been from an abscess alone.

And then his condition crashed... Rombo struggled to breathe. His legs swelled. He became cold. His lungs filled with fluid. Despite normal temperature and gums the day before, everything collapsed in a matter of hours.

A tick fever test revealed the truth, severe tick fever, likely hiding in his body for years. Many street dogs carry it silently. Often it stays dormant, until something stresses the immune system, an infection, a wound, a bite and then it can erupt with brutal speed.

We wish with all our hearts we had known sooner. That we had tested earlier. That we could have given him the right medication just a day or two before his body crashed.

This “what if” is heavy on us.
But even in our sorrow, we hold on to the most important truth:
Rombo was safe. Loved. Held.❤️
He spent the past two years surrounded by care, kindness, soft hands, warm beds and people who believed in him. People who celebrated every tiny step he worked so hard to take.

Rombo, we are so deeply sorry that your time with us was too short and we are so incredibly proud of you!
We will never forget your gentle eyes, your quiet bravery, and the little miracles you showed us each day. You are so deeply missed ,it is impossible to put into words.

Run free now, sweet boy. 🌈

🎄 Welcome to the Mbwa Wa Africa Advent Calendar! 🎄
In the days leading up to Christmas, our rescues will share a little wish from our Amazon Wishlist, a small gift that makes a big difference. ✨🎁

✨ Day 1 – Meet Ajabu ✨

Ajabu means “miracle” in Kiswahili, and honestly… her story is nothing short of that. 💛

Back in 2017, Taji, one of our beloved wheelchair dogs who has since passed, insisted on taking a completely different path during a walk with Sandra. He pulled and pulled until they reached a bush… and there, trembling and tiny, sat Ajabu.

A scared little puppy. Something wrong with her hind legs. All alone.
If Taji hadn’t chosen that road that day, she might never have been found. 💔

As she grew, it became clear her hind legs had been deformed from birth, causing painful wounds. To give her a life free of suffering, we made the decision to amputate both. And with her first wheelchair, a whole new world opened for her. 🦽💛

At first, Ajabu was afraid of everything, strangers, movements, noises. It took more than half a year before she dared to join the group walks. But today?
Today she zooms around like a cheeky little rocket! 🚀
She plays, she shouts, she sings, she makes her presence VERY known.
And she has a best friend, Kishuli, and together they are an unstoppable duo of joy.

You’ll always hear her before you see her. And honestly, we wouldn’t want it any other way. ❤️

🌟 Ajabu’s Christmas Wish:
Probiotics, to help calm her often-upset tummy.

If you’d like to grant her wish, you can do so via our Amazon Wishlist. You can find the link in our story or in our link tree.

And tomorrow… another one of our wonderful rescues will open the next Advent door. 🚪

Our November Adoptions 🙌

First up was sweet Opra. In september she was found with a big wound on her neck that healed wonderfully thanks to our clinic team 💪 It was a debate if Opra could go back to the street or not and then just one day after we decided to keep her, she found her forever home with Oscar. She now lives at a wonderful orphanage with three other dogs (two former MWA rescues). 💜

Long Term residents Whiskey and Vodka had to wait three years to find their home but found the perfect human in our driver Six. As tiny puppies they came, survived parvo and have grown into two wonderful dogs, who now have the best home we could have wished for them. ❤️

Johnboy and Erin came as three week old puppies almost 3 months ago. Both found their loving forever homes with two wonderful families. Both have new dog friends and get to live out their lives playing, cuddeling and always having a warm bed to return to. 😊

And lastly Bere was adopted after coming to us about 4 minth ago. This sweetheart was found with 6 of his siblings, also at just 3 weeks old. 🥰

Thank you so so much to all the amazing people who decided to adopt, don't shop and for giving our rescues the lives they deserve ❤️

Meet Edie 🥰

Sweet little Edie was found by someone in Arusha, limping around with an injured front paw. At just 3 to 4 months old, she should be busy exploring the world, not struggling to walk. X-rays showed a fracture in her paw, so what she needs now is time, rest, and a very stylish little cast to help everything heal properly.

And through all of it, Edie has been nothing but a sweetheart.
She never complains.
She’s soft, gentle, friendly, and loves every bit of affection she can get. ❤️

She waits patiently in her kennel, always polite, always calm, but her favourite moments are her little supervised play sessions in between her rest times. She enjoys a cuddle, loves people, and gets along wonderfully with other dogs. She truly is one of those easy, kind puppies with a naturally sweet soul.

Just a few more weeks of healing and Edie will be ready to join our pack and then she’ll be looking for a forever home. Whoever adopts her will be incredibly lucky.

Welcome, Edie. ✨🐾

Our Story

The heart and essence of Mbwa wa Africa is to try everything in our power to ensure that each individual dog that comes into our care is given the best possible chance to recover, rehabilitate and be re-homed.

The foundation of our welfare policy is that dogs in our care not only have the basic needs required to sustain the necessary five freedoms:

· Freedom from hunger and thirst (food and water) All animals deserve access to clean water and a well-balanced, nutritious diet. ...

· Freedom from discomfort (shelter) ...
