Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue

Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue Mbwa Wa Africa is a safe haven for injured and sick animals. We run a Rescue Centre as well as a Veterinary Clinic. As an NGO, we rely on YOUR help!🐾

Our first priority is to find loving and forever homes for the rescued dogs. Secondly, to inform about our work, increase awareness of the situation of the stray dogs and reach out to people, who are willing to offer help of any kind. We started off with building 5 kennel to accommodate the dogs and puppies we kept on finding and couldn't fit into our house - occupied by our 8 rescues already- any

more, until they would be recovered and ready to make a new owner happy. These 7 kennel by now are sometimes the temporary home for up to 35 dogs and several cats...

Rabies, A Fight We Cannot Stop Fighting 💉🐾

After more than a year without a single case, the past month has hit us hard. Within just a few weeks, three dogs were brought to our clinic showing clear symptoms of rabies. Neurological signs, drooling, confusion, and heartbreaking screams of distress.

All three were young dogs, all from different areas. And all three lives ended in the same devastating way. Once we were sure it was rabies, we had to make the most difficult but most merciful decision, to end their suffering. The tests on their brain tissue later confirmed what we already feared. 💔

We’ve been working together with Mission Rabies for over 10 years, vaccinating thousands of dogs every year, and we’ve seen the difference. Fewer rabies cases, communities becoming more aware, people returning each year for vaccinations, and seeking help when their animals fall sick. This is progress.💪

But moments like these remind us why we must keep going. It’s a disease that can be 100% prevented through vaccination, yet still claims lives every single day.💉

With every suspected rabies case that comes through our gates, our clinic team acts immediately. Isolating the dog to prevent any risk of spreading the disease. They are the quiet heroes of our work, facing danger every time they handle a rabies case. Their calm professionalism, experience, and courage make all the difference. Their dedication truly saves lives, both animal and human. 💛

In the past weeks, our team has been back in the field, continuing our vaccination campaigns in new areas around Arusha. It’s not always easy, there are challenges, setbacks, and obstacles beyond our control, but seeing rabies return shows exactly why we can’t stop.

Every vaccinated dog means one less potential victim. Every campaign means more awareness. Every step forward means lives saved, for animals and for people.
We will keep going. For the dogs. For the people. For a rabies-free future. 💫

Poor Juli was pushed through someone’s fence and ended up in their garden. The lady who found her already had several dogs of her own and couldn’t keep her, but she did the right thing and reached out for help.🧡

When Juli arrived, she was shy and scared, trying to hide from everyone. She was limping on one of her back legs, covered in ticks and fleas. Clearly she hadn’t had an easy life out there.💔

Our clinic team gave her a thorough check-up, and luckily her leg has healed completely, no lasting problems at all! After a few weeks of good food, care, and love, Juli has started to trust again. She’s showing her sweet and gentle nature, loves cuddles, and has already made new friends.🥰

Now that she’s moved out of quarantine and joined the big pack, we’re so happy to see her blossom day by day. Sometimes, all it takes is a little love and safety for a scared soul to shine again. ✨

Let us introduce 6 of our newest pack members 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Three weeks ago, we were contacted about 6 motherless puppies at Sable Square. There was no mother around and at just 3 weeks old, the pups' chances of survival all by themselves were slim. Our Six went out to collect them and once they arrived at our rescue, we found tired but otherwise healthy pups. 😊

We think that they were probably dumped at Sable Sqaure. All pups were overall in a really good condition and did not seem like they had spent days alone in the cold. Luckily, they were found quickly. What happened to their mother or where she is today, we will never know... 😞

After getting loads of sleep and filling up their bellies, they quickly lived up and by now have turned into happy and active little dogs. Our volunteers decided to revive "The Waltons" and therefore we are happy to introduce: Mary Ellen, Olivia, Erin, John Boy, Curtis & Ike ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Soon, these six cuties will be looking for their very own home. 🏡

At Mbwa Wa Africa, we see both the best and the worst of humanity. This dogs story reminded us of that all too clearly.😞

A group of children arrived at our clinic with their beloved dog, carried in a wheelbarrow. She had been hit by a motorbike and suffered terrible injuries. Despite her condition, they were desperate to save her. We examined her, gave her every chance, and hoped with them for a miracle.

But the next morning, the truth became clear. An X-ray showed her spine was broken beyond repair. Even more shocking, her grandfather told us that the driver had struck her intentionall and after she collapsed, returned to hit her again, over the head, with a stone.😡💔

The children were heartbroken. This dog was family to them, and they had done everything possible to bring her to safety. But at this point, all we could do for her was to end her suffering and let her go peacefully. 🌈

Some stories are hard to share, but they matter. They show why we fight for animals every day. Why we spay and neuter, educate, and push for change. Cruelty can not be the norm. Kindness must be louder.❤️

Thank you to all of you who stand with us through both the happy stories and the hard ones. Your support allows us to be there when animals, and the people who love them, need us most.🧡

Over the past few weeks, we were lucky enough to welcome the most wonderful volunteers at Mbwa wa Africa. 🌸

Bianca from Italy, a veterinarian, supported in our clinic for two weeks. She was always very hands-on and cared with a lot of passion for our patients. A special thank you for taking such good care of our Sh**un who recently passed away, for giving Safi all the love and care she could have wished for in her last days and also for making our Noa feel right at home in her first few days at the shelter. Thanks to you, Noa will get to experience a life free of pain. No matter how long she has left, you gave her another chance. ❤️

Alina was first here eight years ago. Back then, she even donated for Ajabu, who is our longest resident dog at MWA, her ever first wheelchair. Now, eight years later, they got to reunite and we couldn't have been happier to see her back! Thank you Alina, for the countless walks, late night feeding and giving so much love and compassion towards our rescues. You took such a huge workload off of our shoulders, thank you for your hard work. 💪😊

And last but certainly not leats, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dina-Marie at our rescue. She is a physio therapist for dogs and it is hard to put into words, what it means to us, that she took such good care of our disabled animals. We do all we can for them, but they all for sure could use more physio than we can provide them with. Thanks to Dinah-Marie, we have learned a lot and hope to carry on her work as much as we can in the future. A special thank you for taking on our Pippa, who was in dire need of physio therapy and whose condition surely would have worsened without your intervention. 🥰

Furthermore, they all cam with luggages full of donations. Thank you to your family and friends, everyone who donated generously and for stuffing your bags 😋

Thank you so much to all of you. It was to our absolute delight that we got to meet you or see you again. You have all left an impact with us and we hope to see you again. 🐶😺❤️

Clinic Update – A Few of Our Recent Patients

Our veterinary team has been busy over the past weeks with a variety of patients, and we’d love to share a few stories with you:

From a pack we collected in Arusha for spay/neuter: One of the dogs had an old, badly healed fracture in his front leg. Being older and in constant pain, there was sadly no way to repair it, so our vets decided on an amputation. Even on three legs, this clever boy made several escape attempts from his cage, clearly not a fan of being fenced in! Once he had recovered, he happily returned to his territory, where a kind woman working nearby is feeding and looking after the whole pack.❤️

Another dog that came in during our weekly spay/neuter campaign was suffering from a severe case of mange. She stayed with us at the shelter until her skin healed and her fur grew back. But she, too, made it very clear that she preferred her freedom: one morning we found her hiding behind our property in the bushes, her way of telling us she was ready to return home to her familiar territory.🥰

And finally, a sweet little dog from one of our employee’s neighbours came in after swallowing chicken bones. One bone had become stuck in her mouth, causing her a lot of pain. Our clinic team quickly removed it, and after a few days of observation, she was wagging her tail again and able to return home.🐶

Each case is a reminder of how important our clinic is. Whether it’s spay/neuter, life-saving surgery, or simply easing pain. And it’s thanks to your support that we can keep helping dogs like these every day. 💪

This past week, our clinic has been bursting with patients, and every single one of our kennels is filled. We will give you a few updates on our current patients soon. But for now, I just want to give a big applause to our amazing clinic team, who are absolutely working at their limits at the moment. Coming in very early, leaving late in the evening until everyone is taken care of 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Thank you Anna, Naftal, Haika, Joshua & Irine ❤️

Our sweet and gentle old Lady: Noa ❤️

Noa was brought to our clinic by her owner, who wanted to surrender her because of a large tumor on her side. Since he was reluctant to spend money on his dog we offered to do the surgery free of charge and asked him to bring her back in a few days.
But only an hour later, we found Noa left outside our gate, her owner had simply driven off and refused to answer our calls when we tried to contact him. Mind you, this was not a poor villager without options, but a man who arrived by car, someone who had likely earned good money over the years breeding Noa and selling her puppies. 😡

None of this was Noa’s fault. She is a sweet German Shepherd mix, most likely used for breeding for many years, and then discarded once she was no longer “useful.”

Our veterinary team performed two surgeries: first to remove the huge mass on her side, which thankfully could be taken out completely, even though it turned out to be malignant. In a second operation, we removed several mammary tumors, another sign of years of breeding.

Through it all, Noa has been nothing but gentle and kind. She adores puppies, seeks out human affection, and has the softest, most loving heart. 💞

We don’t know how much time Noa has left, given her age and diagnosis. But what we do know is that she will spend the rest of her days surrounded by love, care, and dignity, something she has always deserved.🐾

Cat adoptions!😻

Over the past two months 10 of our cats and kittens became part of lovely families!

Finding homes for the older cats is especially challenging and we are glad to announce that Kairo, who was dumped here by her owner and Wilbur, who once came to us injured and paralysed but made a full recovery found their very own humans.💫

As did the kittens Amalia, Mabel & Leo, Mist & Oliver AND the three tiny kittens of only 4 weeks!

Thank you!🙏🏽

We wish everybody a joyful life full of many beautiful moments and memories together!💞🐾

🌍🐾 World Rabies Day 2025 🐾🌍
Theme: “Act Now: You, Me, Community”

This week, we put those words into action. 💪

🐕 Last year, we expanded our project area to include Arusha District Council, scaling up our impact and taking another step closer to the goal: a rabies-free Tanzania by 2030.

📚 Since Monday, our education team has been out in Arusha District Council, delivering life-saving rabies awareness lessons to over 17,000 primary school students. Knowledge is the first step in ending rabies.

💉 Yesterday, together with our amazing partner Mission Rabies, we deployed 8 vaccination teams across Arusha DC — protecting thousands of dogs and the communities they live in.

Rabies is 100% preventable — and by working together, you, me, community, we can save lives. ✨

Our Story

The heart and essence of Mbwa wa Africa is to try everything in our power to ensure that each individual dog that comes into our care is given the best possible chance to recover, rehabilitate and be re-homed.

· Freedom from hunger and thirst (food and water) All animals deserve access to clean water and a well-balanced, nutritious diet. ...

· Freedom from discomfort (shelter) ...
