Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue

Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue Mbwa wa Africa (dogs of Africa) Animal Rescue was founded 2013 by Sandra Kliegelhoefer and Jens Fissenebert.
(57)

Our first priority is to find loving and forever homes for the rescued dogs. Secondly, to inform about our work, increase awareness of the situation of the stray dogs and reach out to people, who are willing to offer help of any kind. We started off with building 5 kennel to accommodate the dogs and puppies we kept on finding and couldn't fit into our house - occupied by our 8 rescues already- any

more, until they would be recovered and ready to make a new owner happy. These 7 kennel by now are sometimes the temporary home for up to 35 dogs and several cats...

Officially introducing one of the rescues that recently found their way to us: Channey!🩷🐹

This little cutie appeared 2 weeks ago in our private garden. 6 weeks old and less than 2kg somebody must have put her there. Covered in lice and fleas and very hungry she was a sad little dog, but that quickly changed!

After a well needed bath – which she didn’t appreciate!😅 – and some good hearty meals she started cuddling and playing and today she is already a super happy puppy!

Overly cute, attentive, smart, loving and very playful she will look soon for a loving forever home and we are sure her future family will be very lucky to have this special little Lady!🐾💞

🐾 Thank You for Your Incredible Support! 🐾

Three weeks ago, we posted an urgent appeal for help to keep MWA going. We were facing a dire financial crisis, and we turned to you, our amazing community of animal lovers, for support. The response has been absolutely overwhelming and we are still absolutely blown away by it.

So many of you immediately shared our donation link and we are thrilled to share that nearly 100 compassionate individuals came together to raise over 10,000 Euros! Your generosity will help sustain our operations for the next few months, ensuring that our 90 dogs and 30 cats receive the care they deserve, and our dedicated team of 25 employees can continue their vital work.

Your kindness and swift action have exceeded our belief in the power of community and generosity. With these funds, we can continue to provide food, medical care, and a safe haven for our beloved animals.

We are actively working on securing reliable funds and optimizing our costs to ensure the stability of our operations on a monthly basis. While we strive for sustainability, we acknowledge that donations will always play a crucial role in our mission. If you feel moved to continue supporting us with a small monthly donation, it would be greatly appreciated. Every bit helps in keeping our doors open and making a difference in the lives of these wonderful animals.

Thank you once again for your generosity, compassion, and unwavering support. Together, we are making a brighter future for our furry friends.

With heartfelt gratitude,

The entire MWA Team ❤️

The big vaccination campaign in Arusha, which was generously funded by Edgard & Cooper Foundation, is over (figures still to come). But the following weeks we will continue with the collection of dogs from our project area in order to neuter them in our clinic at the Gongo Centre. Here are some impressions from the last surgery day 🧑‍⚕️🐕

Walli in Wonderland!🐹🧚‍♀️

Even though she grew up at our shelter, Wallis life wasn’t without challenges.
Born at a garage where her mother was injured by a car when her puppies were 4 weeks old, they all came to us covered in oil and dirt.

Later Walli suffered from tick fever and neurological problems, but she fought her way back to life💪

For the next 14 month she waited patiently for the right people to come and when Peter and his friend Elle came along, she took her fate in her own paws and wouldn’t leave their site to make sure they take her home💞

We get wonderful updates about our Walli – now Marley – and knowing she is so happy and loved is the best reward ever!

Thank you so much Peter and Elle, Marleys life just started, and we are glad that she will spend it with you!🥰🐾

Our days are super busy at the moment at MWA. But some things should not go unseen!🤓

We want to give a big shout out to our cracking volunteers, who not only give their love and time to our animals and keep them in their thoughts long after they had to go home again.🏵

Many also collect and bring donations with them of items which are often not or hardly available in Tanzania and help us get Mbwa Wa Africa going, the dogs and cats happy and spoiled🐹🐱

Maeva and Emily brought so much stuff with them that they didn’t had room for their own clothes and also Cora went out of her way to make sure that our rescues get high quality treats, toys, collars and leashes😁🥳

Thank you so much guys, you rock!
Hope to see you again soon🥰🤗

Little wild dogs!🐾

You probably know our tiny hand reared puppies already from many posts in the story.
Now it is time to introduce them properly😊

10 days ago, a Lady from a village close by found that the mum of the puppies had passed away in the night.
The little ones were only 10 days old and already dehydrated. Nevertheless, they had a huge appetite and with a three hourly bottle-feeding schedule night and day they all did a great job growing (and keeping us on our toes!😅)

They are nick named the ‘wild dogs’ for a reason!

So here they are: Dingo, Coyote, Jackal, Pariah and Culpeo🐹🐹🐹🐹🐹

We honestly never had puppies before that developed so fast and started eating porridge only two and a half weeks old!
Let’s see in what kind of dogs they will grow into!🥰

Rescue of today!🐕

She is not in a terrible state.
She isn't super skinny or ridden by hundreds of flies.
Her skin looks mostly OK and she apart from small liaisons she isn't wounded.
BUT
She was next to Arusha's busiest road in the centre of town, sitting on the side-walk. Trying to avoid getting kicked by the many people that didn't pay attention to her. Looking up to them and giving a little tail wag in the hope of some kindness.
Only to get chased on the road.

We couldn't leave her there, it broke our hearts💔

Welcome to the rest of your life sweet Nelly, you will be saved and loved!🥰🐹

Introducing our Mama Paka (mother of the cats)🐱

If you follow us closely you may have noticed that the amount of our rescue cats increased greatly since we moved to the Gongo Centre.
Because there aren't many stray cats in our area, our focus has always been on the dogs and we weren't prepared to accommodate 30+ feline rescues, litters of kittens and cats with special needs like our blind Schnursula and paralysed Sky.

Thanks to the amazing Four Steps to freedom and lovely private donors we have been able to finally build a spacious cattery with different rooms and a kitten nursery.🙏

Our cats love it, but with 80 rescue dogs to care for the time of the shelter staff was already stretched to the limit. We all did our best , but knew that we needed a dedicated cat carer, however our financial resources wouldn't allow us to employ more staff.

And what can I say: another miracle happened at MWA!😇

Our friend Helen Weigt who visited after volunteering with us years ago and her sister Judith Weigt (who adopted Theodora, featured in the first picture to Germany) offered cover the wages of a Mama Paka!
So here she is Naomi!

It never fails to amaze and deeply humble us what wonderful and selfless people we meet through our work for the animals in need. We couldn't be more grateful to Helen and Judith and are reminded of their generosity every time we see Naomi in action 😉

She is such such a lovely and kind person and sure makes a huge different for our cats. She feeds, cleans, plays and cuddles with them, walks with Schnursula and is there to keep a close eye on their every day needs. We see our shy cats living up, our kittens being socialized and all of them happy and content and we know they are well looked after.
What makes us very happy as well☺️

Thank you so much Helen and Judith, Naomi means the world to our cats!🐈🐈‍⬛😻

Can you believe it!?🥹

After a long time at the shelter (to be precise 1 year and 3 months, or 450 days for the brothers Wörni, Kalle and Jonne, and 1 year and 4 months, almost 490 days for Nalo) these for wonderful dogs finally found their forever home!🥳

They all once came here as 4 weeks old puppies and waited patiently until the right person came along. The only reason it took so long, is that we just have too many beautiful rescues at the shelter 🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕

Thank you Manase and Vedaslus for choosing to adopt don't shop!
And the best thing is they they are still living in our neighbourhood and you dog carer Elisa already visited them, showed their new humans how to walk with and properly care for them!

If you are thinking as well about adopting one of our amazing rescues
our key requirements for adopting are:
✨doggies will not go to homes where they are kept on chains.
✨They need a secure compound to be able to run freely and kept/treated as members of the family with care and lots of love.
✨They need to be fed good food twice daily and have water available at all times. 🥰
✨We do not allow breeding from any of our rescue dogs and encourage neutering all other owned dogs too. (We have facilities to help with this)
✨ Our dogs should be vaccinated annually
✨ Should be given regular parasite preventative (flea/tick treatment and worming)

Please note that to help with the costs and in order to be able to continue our work and rescue animals we ask for a adoption donation of 50.000TS

An old gentleman!🐹

Pastor was rescued by our friends from Kilimanjaro Animal Rescue.
He has multiple server medical problems and is sadly definitely a case for hospice care.

Since we have some experience with that and our medical team at the clinic always on hand, we decided together that he should best stay with us for the last leg of his life.

He is a lovely guy, who doesn’t ask for much and once his TVT has cleared of he will spend his days with us in the office or at the kitchen – just like Adele and GD did.🌟

Welcome to Mwa Wa Africa Pastor, we will do everything to keep you happy and comfortable!🐕

… and he is also looking for a sponsor😉

🐾 Urgent Appeal: Help keep MWA going! 🐾

Dear MWA Supporters,

We're facing a dire financial crisis and urgently need your help to ensure the well-being of our beloved animals. We know, we just recently reached out to you for financial support but once again the financial strain is keeping us up at night.

Monthly donors play a vital role in supporting our operations by providing a steady income stream. This consistent support enables us to plan for the future, cover essential expenses, and most importantly, continue to provide the best care possible for our furry residents.

Currently, we're facing uncertainty about how we'll afford food for our rescues the upcoming months. With 90 dogs, 30 cats, and a team of 25 employees who lovingly care for them, our resources are stretched thin. These animals rely on us for their daily care, and we refuse to let them down.

You may have noticed recent updates about construction projects or our involvement in vaccination and spay/neuter campaigns. While these initiatives are crucial for the well-being of animals in our community, the funding for them comes from restricted grants and cannot be redirected to cover our operational expenses due to contractual obligations. Additionally, while our clinic generates some income, it's insufficient to cover our monthly expenses.

While our long-term partners have been incredibly supportive during tough times, even their assistance has its limits. We've reached a point where our resources are exhausted, and we're struggling to make ends meet more than ever.

To everyone who has supported us in the past, we are incredibly grateful. Now, we humbly ask for your continued support to ensure that we can keep our doors open and continue our lifesaving work. 🏠🐶🐱

Seeing your interactions on our social media, many of you are with us in good times and in bad times. You share our joy and our sad moments.
Please consider becoming a monthly donor or making a one-time contribution today. Every dollar makes a difference and brings us one step closer to securing a brighter future for our rescue.

Thank you for standing with us during this challenging time. ❤

Time for a kitten up-date!🐱

Which actually will be partly a sad one as well....

Over the past weeks we lost five out of our nine kitties😔
Kittens are very vulnerable and we don't really know what happened.
It was hard to see the little guys fading away, especially the ones we hand raised from a very young age. But the Mbwa Wa Africa shelter/clinic team did everything possible - the rest was out of or hands.

Tobago, Aruba, Guadeloupe, Alice and Arthur, we wish we would have more time together, we love you💔

The good news is that Cuba, Barbados, Albert and Dogo are doing great!
The little boys are very affectionate and playful, Dogo girl is a bit of a wild child 🤣

Soon they are all looking for a wonderful home!🩵

Remember our little puppies from the beginning of this year?
Timid Nepomuck and bold Merlina?
Well they grew up to be the best friends and now they found their forever home together!🐹🐹

Once nobody cared about them, nobody even looked at them.
Thank you Hans for seeing them, giving them a loving home and a happy life!

What a nice initiative!👏

It's ‘Looking After our Planet’ week at the Braeburn School in Arusha and yesterdays theme was 'caring for animals'.🐹🐱🐔🦜🐇

Our dog carer Maiko and vet intern Kelvin were invited to talk with the kids about the love and care for animals, meet their rabbits and and give some insides in their work.

Everybody had a great morning!

Thank you so much, education is key!💪

Zion is a very special rescue; in fact, you can say that he rescued himself!😄

Last weekend when Jaquie went for a dog walk, this small fellow was waiting outside our gate and greeting her very friendly.

He happily would let us pet him, but when we tried to put him on a lead he run away.

Later that day our dog carer Maiko told us that a little dog found his way into the Gongo centre and he gave him food and a place in one of the holding kennels – to our surprise that was Zion!🐹

Investigating our gate (yes, I love detective stories!) we found his paw-prints all over it🐾, indicating that he opened it and let himself in.

Clever boy, he had an abscess that needed treatment and just went to the right place for help!

If he has an owner who is missing him, we would love to reunite them!💕
Zion is already 4-5 years old, very friendly with people, dogs and cats alike, not very big and a really lovely dog.

Do you recognise him?

And what are the odds? Only a week after her sister Castella left for Germany also our beautiful Cora found her forever home, her safe place and her very own family!

Thank you Doris and Upendo (and dog Kaly) for noticing her after a year of being overlooked.

I think we all agree that some good news are in order!😊

We are delighted to announce that our Castella is living the life of her dreams in Germany!🤩🐾

After she and her sisters escaped death as tiny puppies, she waited a year at the shelter that someone would notice her – or her sisters. But there was zero interest from potential adopters, nothing, nada, in these very friendly, pretty, and well-behaved young doggies.😒

Her life changed forever when our friend Helen came back 4 years after she had volunteered with us and decided to give one of our rescues a loving home. 🐹

And what a home that is!

For two weeks Castella is living the best of all lives with Helen and Moritz now and I think the pictures speak for themselves: pure bliss for the dog and her humans!💕

They love her to pieces and Castella is paying them back with endless snuggles, faith and happiness!

Thank you for opening your hearts, your home, yours lives to this sweet soul!💙

Fissi was one of our very first rescues. We looked after his mother and siblings even before MWA was funded, actually we were there when he was born.🐾

He got adopted and lived in our village. After 9 years he found his way back to us, sick and with severe medical conditions.
We made him one of our personal pack with all the benefits of a caring home (like two sofas to choose from😉)

Yesterday we kissed him goodbye.💕🖤

He was a celebrity and our whole village is mourning for him with us.
But what a life he had!
We are grateful and happy that he chose to be with us the last 3 years, it was a truly special time.

Rest easy now lovely boy, you will always be one of the pack!🐹

(and we sincerely hope that this is the end now of all the sad news!)

Yesterday another of our Mbwa Wa Africa legends, the one and only GD left us forever.🖤

Naftal found the old, blind, and deaf dog almost 3 years ago ‘disposed’ in a ditch and ever since he was a constant part of our family.

GD was standing for grand dad, some people would change it in ‘grumpy dog’, but we really think ‘good dog’ was what it should be!☺️

It’s true, nobody could touch him in the beginning, he would do whatever and sleep wherever it pleased him. He would go through any garbage bin, steal food. and trash the house.
But as our dear friend Phyllis put it when she heard about his passing: “sincere condolences about the loss of darling GD. I loved him so so much he was a “special soul”. I loved his grumpy little ways and his strong resilience which didn’t let anything get in his way. May he rest easy in doggy heaven. 💔”

We couldn’t agree more!

Over the past year, GD got more and more confident with people.
He spent his days with us in the office, would greet us happily and even a little playful every morning, enjoyed belly rubs and ear scratches – all on his terms as a matter of course!

Two days ago, he stopped eating and wasn’t feeling well. Examination, x ray and ultrasound showed nothing out of the usual and we think it was just his time to go.

Maybe he decided to follow Adele who we lost 3 weeks ago. The last 10 month they had spent their time together in the office. We never noticed a strong bond between them, but perhaps it was too subtle for us.🐾

Sweet GD boy, you will always be in out thought and our hearts. Thank you for coming into our lives and letting us are for you.🙏
Carry on now, run free, see, hear, smell whatever there is around you, we love you forever!💕

A little dog with a lion heart!🐹🦁

You maybe saw our little Cashew already and now we want to introduce him properly.

Cashews owners didn't look after him very well and when he came to us at 3 months he was on the brink of death.
It took day and night care to survive for him, but slowly get grew into that healthy, playful and lively puppy he was supposed to be.😊

Cashew moved into the puppy group, where his is the smallest but definitely not a push over!
He goes already on walks, loves to play and to snuggle, isn't shy at all and hopes to become the beloved family dog of kind - and then very lucky- humans!😉

We have asked our friend Uli to arrange a parcel with badly needed medical supplies for our clinic and she and her collages put everything together and donated it to us!

We are blown away by this kindness and more than grateful to have such wonderful friends and supports around the globe!💚🧡

Introducing Rosalie!🐹🐾

Our little Rosa was dumped at the parking lot of a supermarket.
She was in good shape and very friendly with people, so we think that she came from a home and maybe she was left there intentionally in the hope that someone of the customers would take her, we can’t tell.

But we know that nobody wanted the sweet puppy girl, and she was too little to survive on her own, especially next to the busy main road.

Rosalie is with us for two weeks now and we can vouch that she is just the cutest, playful, politest tiny dog you will ever meet.🥰

Here is to a bright and happy future for Rosa, will you make that happen for her and give her a loving home?

Our Story

The heart and essence of Mbwa wa Africa is to try everything in our power to ensure that each individual dog that comes into our care is given the best possible chance to recover, rehabilitate and be re-homed.

The foundation of our welfare policy is that dogs in our care not only have the basic needs required to sustain the necessary five freedoms:

· Freedom from hunger and thirst (food and water) All animals deserve access to clean water and a well-balanced, nutritious diet. ...

· Freedom from discomfort (shelter) ...
