Already in the pre-war period the veterinary clinic "Kuzja" took care of many stray animals. The head of charge of the clinic in parallel to scientific-pedegogic work has brought this volunteer project for well over 15 years. She was trying to save these animals. She treated them, sterilized them, vaccinated them and finally looked for a new home for them. In a certain period this hobby turned into a more structured project, based on the available means of the veterinary clinic. This is how the idea of founding one’s own refuge was born. Investing 4 years of efforts, we came to organize a team composed of people who at the time decided to embrace the path of volunteering and helping animals in difficulty.
The capacity of the refuge allowed about 30 animals to be accommodated at the same time – small and large. In addition, the “Kuzja” clinic was the promoter of the project “Give the cat a house” in Kharkiv (the second most populated city in Ukraine after the capital Kyiv, with about 1.5 million inhabitants) with the aim of an exhibition to expand the chances in the search for a new owner. Also this year we were making the last preparations for the exhibition for which we selected 15 cats from our shelter. but unfortunately our plans were shattered ...
On the morning of February 24, 2022, the Russian government ordered Ukraine to be attacked. The whole Ukraine was abruptly awakened by a flood of rockets from Russia hitting Ukrainian territory. Unlike the claims of the Russian military that it claimed to hit only military targets, the greatest damage has suffered precisely the civilian infrastructure.
At that very moment 36 animals were still housed at the clinic, most of whom had not yet found a new family. Many of these animals were in rehabilitation, many have recently undergone various surgeries and required rest. The most obvious thing in this situation would have been to get away from the danger zone as soon as possible, leaving everything else behind. So many have done. Instead, our team firmly decided that under no circumstances would they leave these poor beasts to their fate. While risking our lives, we immediately headed to the clinic where our veterinarian and his assistant were already waiting for us.
It has already been a whole month since the war broke out in Ukraine. Despite a very high danger to the lives of our staff (the clinic is located in the neighborhood called Saltivka, a northern district of Kharkiv and given its territorial location, which is why even more affected by Russian army rockets) we continue to carry out our moral duty relentlessly. As already mentioned above, after a month of violent bombing Kharkiv suffered enormous damage to the infrastructure of the city (on 26.03.22 more than 1300 non-war buildings were affected, such as the various buildings, private houses, schools, hospitals, etc., many of which were completely destroyed).
For this reason, according to the current situation in Kharkiv regarding our clinic, only two others remained operational (I remember that before the war Khrkiv had more than 1.5 million inhabitants, many of whom remained in the city for various reasons). In the rush to leave the city, several families could not (or did not want to) take their animals with them. This fact further aggravates a situation that is already very difficult in itself. Many of these poor creatures have been abandoned in the middle of the road, or even worse, locked up in homes without nutrition. Our team tries to support as much as possible. Currently 25 animals are housed at our clinic, another 16 we managed to bring home one of our volunteers who lives in Pervomaisky, about 100 km from Kharkiv. But as already mentioned, in Kharkiv there are still many other animals that need to be helped, so we are running out of space again. Unfortunately, many animals are taken to the clinic in very bad condition and we are not always able to save them, despite our great will and efforts. Such as the recent case of a kitten with acute pneumonia that we hosted at our facility.
Every day we unintentionally witness tremendous scenes that war brings with it. Despite the lack of medicines, the various items of first necessity, the danger to the lives of the clinic staff and their families that we have welcomed, we try to carry out our task. Precisely for this reason we ask all the people and organizations that have the opportunity and willingness to support our mission to get in touch with us. Gia' nel periodo prebellico la clinica veterinaria „Kuzja“ prendeva cura di tanti animali randaggi. Il capo responsabile della clinica parrallelamenmte al lavoro scientifico-pedagogico ha portato per ben piu’ di 15 anni il progetto di volontariato. Lei cercava di salvare questi animali. Li curava, sterilizzava, vaccinava e infine cercava per loro una nuova casa. In un certo periodo questo hobby e’ tramutato in un progetto piu’strutturato, basato sui mezzi disponibili della clinica veterinaria. Cosi’ e’ nata l’idea di fondare un proprio rifugio. Investendo 4 anni di sforzi si’ e’ arrivati ad aver organizzato un team composto di persone che a suo tempo hanno deciso di abbracciare la via del volontariato e di aiutare gli animali in difficolta’. La capacita’ del rifugio consentiva di accogliere contemporaneamente circa 30 animali – piccoli e grandi che siano. In piu’ la clinica “Kuzja” era il promotore del progetto “Regala al micio una casa” a Kharkiv (la seconda citta’ piu’ popolata dell’Ucraina dopo la capitale Kyiv, con circa 1.5 millioni di abitanti) con lo scopo di trovare un nuovo padrone per i nostri gatti. Anche quest’anno stavamo facendo le ultime preparazioni per la mostra per la quale abbiamo selezionato 15 gatti deel nostro rifugio. ma purtroppo i nostri piani sono andati in frantumi...
Il mattino del 24 febbraio 2022 il governo russo ha ordinato di attacare l’Ucraina. L’intera Ucraina e’ stata svegliata bruscamente da una marea di razzi che partendo dalla Russia andavano a colpire il territorio ucraino. Diversamente dalle affermazioni dell’esercito russo che sosteneva di colpire solo i bersagli militari, il danno maggiore ha subito proprio l’infrastruttura civile.
In quel preciso momento presso la clinica erano ospitati ancora 36 animali, la maggior parte dei quali non avevano ancora trovato una nuova famiglia. Tanti di questi animali erano in riabilitazione, in molti hanno subito di recente vari interventi chirurgici e richiedevano il riposo. La cosa piu’ ovvia in questa situazione sarebbe stata quella di allontanarsi il prima possibile dalla zona di pericolo, lasciando dietro tutto il resto. Cosi’ hanno fatto in molti. Il nostro team invece ha deciso fermamente che in nessun caso non avrebbe lasciato a proprio destino queste povere bestie. Pur rischiando la vita ci siamo diretti subito verso la clinica dove ci attendeva gia’ il nostro veterinario e la sua assistente.
Attualmente e’ gia’ trascorso un mese intero da quando scoppio’ la guerra in Ucraina. Nonostante un altissimo pericolo per le vite del nostro personale (la clinica si trova nel quartiere di nome Saltivka, un quartiere settentrionale di Kharkiv e vista la sua posizione territoriale, per questo anche maggiormente colpito dai razzi dell’esercito russo) continuiamo a svolgere senza sosta il nostro dovere morale. Come gia’ accennato sopra dopo un mese di violenti bombardamenti Kharkiv ha subito enormi danni alla infrastruttura della citta’ (al 26.03.22 sono stati colpiti piu’ di 1300 edifici di natura non bellica, come le varie palazzine, le case private, le scuole, gli ospedali, ecc., tanti dei quali distrutti completamente). Per questo fatto in base alla situazione attuale a Kharkiv tranne la nostra clinica sono rimaste operative soltanto altre due (ricordo che prima della guerra Khrkiv contava piu’ di 1.5 millioni di abbitanti, molti dei quali per vari raggioni sono rimasti nella citta’). Nella fretta di lasciare la citta’ diverse famiglie non hanno potuto (o non hanno voluto) prendere con se i propri animali. Questo fatto porta ulteriormente ad aggravare una situazione gia’ per se molto difficile. Tante di queste povere creature sono state abbandonate in mezzo alla strada, o ancora peggio, rinchiusi dentro le abitazioni senza cibo. Il nostro team cerca di fare il massimo possibile. Attualmente presso la nostra clinica sono ospitati 25 animali, altri 16 siamo riusciti a portare a casa di una nostra volontaria che abita a Pervomajskij, distante circa 100 km da Kharkiv. Ma come gia’ accennato a Kharkiv sono rimasti ancora moltissimi altri animali che richiedono di essere aiutati, quindi siamo di nuovo a corto dello spazio. Purtroppo tanti animali vengono portati in clinica in condizioni pessime e non sempre siamo in grado di salvarli. Nonostante la nostra grande volonta’ e impegno. Per esempio una gattina che ci hanno portato con una polmonite acuta non e’ soppravvissuta. Tanti animali muoiono per lo stress.
Ogni giorno involontariamente assistiamo a delle scene tremende che porta con se la guerra. Nonostante la carenza dei medicinali, dei vari articoli di prima neccessita’, il pericolo per la vita del personale della clinica e dei loro famigliari che abbiamo accolto cerchiamo di portare avanti il nostro compito. Proprio per questo chiediamo a tutte le persone e le organizzazioni che hanno la possibilita’ e la volonta’ di sostenere la nostra missione di mettersi in contatto con noi. Con il vostro sostegno potremmo salvare ancora tante vite.

Bereits in der Vorkriegszeit kümmerte sich die Tierklinik „Kuzja“ um viele Streuner. Bereits in der Vorkriegszeit kümmerte sich die Tierklinik „Kuzja“ um viele Streuner. Sie versuchte, diese Tiere zu retten. Sie behandelte sie, sterilisierte, impfte und suchte schließlich ein neues Zuhause für sie. In einer gewissen Zeit hat sich dieses Hobby zu einem strukturierteren Projekt entwickelt, das sich auf die verfügbaren Mittel der Tierklinik stützt. Damit war die Idee geboren, ein eigenes Refugium zu gründen. Indem wir 4 Jahre investiert haben, haben wir ein Team von Menschen aufgebaut, die sich damals entschieden haben, den Weg der Freiwilligenarbeit einzuschlagen und Tieren in Not zu helfen. Die Kapazität des Tierheims ermöglichte die gleichzeitige Unterbringung von etwa 30 Tieren - ob klein oder groß. Darüber hinaus war die Klinik „Kuzja“ Förderer des Projekts „Give your cat a home“ in Charkiw (mit rund 1,5 Millionen Einwohnern die zweitgrößte Stadt der Ukraine nach der Hauptstadt Kiew) mit dem Ziel, einen neuen Eigentümer zu finden für unsere Katzen. Auch in diesem Jahr trafen wir die letzten Vorbereitungen für die Ausstellung, für die wir 15 Katzen aus unserem Tierheim ausgewählt haben. Aber leider sind unsere Pläne nicht aufgegangen ...
Am Morgen des 24. Februar 2022 befahl die russische Regierung einen Angriff auf die Ukraine. Die ganze Ukraine wurde schlagartig von einer Flut von Raketen geweckt, die von Russland aus auf ukrainisches Territorium trafen. Im Gegensatz zu den Behauptungen des russischen Militärs, dass es nur militärische Ziele getroffen habe, wurde die zivile Infrastruktur am stärksten beschädigt.
Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren noch 36 Tiere in der Klinik untergebracht, von denen die meisten noch keine neue Familie gefunden hatten. Viele dieser Tiere befanden sich in der Rehabilitation, viele wurden kürzlich verschiedenen Operationen unterzogen und benötigten Ruhe. Das Naheliegendste in dieser Situation wäre gewesen, so schnell wie möglich die Gefahrenzone zu verlassen und alles andere hinter sich zu lassen. So viele haben es getan. Unser Team hingegen war fest entschlossen, diese armen Biester auf keinen Fall ihrem Schicksal zu überlassen. Unter Lebensgefahr fuhren wir sofort in die Klinik, wo unser Tierarzt und seine Assistentin bereits auf uns warteten.
Ein voller Monat ist nun vergangen, seit der Krieg in der Ukraine ausgebrochen ist. Trotz einer sehr hohen Gefahr für das Leben unserer Mitarbeiter (die Klinik befindet sich im Bezirk Saltivka, einem nördlichen Bezirk von Charkiw und aufgrund ihrer territorialen Lage, die daher auch stärker von den Raketen der russischen Armee betroffen ist) führen wir die Durchführung fort non-stop unsere moralische Pflicht. Wie bereits oben erwähnt, erlitt Charkiw nach einem Monat heftiger Bombenangriffe enorme Schäden an der Infrastruktur der Stadt (am 26.03.22 waren mehr als 1300 Gebäude nicht kriegerischer Art betroffen, wie verschiedene Gebäude, Privathäuser, Schulen , Krankenhäuser usw., von denen viele vollständig zerstört wurden). Aus diesem Grund blieben aufgrund der aktuellen Situation in Charkiw außer unserer Klinik nur zwei weitere in Betrieb (ich erinnere mich, dass Charkiw vor dem Krieg mehr als 1,5 Millionen Einwohner hatte, von denen viele aus verschiedenen Gründen in der Stadt blieben). In der Eile, die Stadt zu verlassen, konnten (oder wollten) mehrere Familien ihre Tiere nicht mitnehmen. Diese Tatsache verschlimmert eine ohnehin schon sehr schwierige Situation noch weiter. Viele dieser armen Kreaturen wurden mitten auf der Straße ausgesetzt oder, noch schlimmer, ohne Nahrung in Häusern eingesperrt. Unser Team versucht das maximal Mögliche zu leisten. Derzeit sind 25 Tiere in unserer Klinik untergebracht, weitere 16 konnten wir zu einem unserer Freiwilligen nach Hause bringen, der in Pervomajskij, etwa 100 km von Charkiw entfernt, lebt. Aber wie bereits erwähnt, gibt es in Charkiw noch viele andere Tiere, die Hilfe benötigen, so dass wir wieder Platzmangel haben. Leider werden viele Tiere in sehr schlechtem Zustand in die Klinik gebracht und wir können sie nicht immer retten. Trotz unseres großen Willens und unserer Bemühungen. Zum Beispiel hat ein Kätzchen, das sie uns mit akuter Lungenentzündung gebracht haben, nicht überlebt. Viele Tiere sterben aufgrund von Stress.
Jeden Tag werden wir unfreiwillig Zeuge schrecklicher Szenen, die der Krieg mit sich bringt. Trotz des Mangels an Medikamenten, der verschiedenen lebenswichtigen Artikel, der Gefahr für das Leben des Klinikpersonals und ihrer Familien, die wir begrüßt haben, versuchen wir, unsere Aufgabe zu erfüllen. Genau aus diesem Grund bitten wir alle Menschen und Organisationen, die die Möglichkeit und den Willen haben, unsere Mission zu unterstützen, sich mit uns in Verbindung zu setzen. Mit Ihrer Unterstützung könnten wir noch viel mehr Leben retten.
