The teeth of sloths do not have roots and a surface layer of enamel, so they are classified as edentulous. The skull has two sections, one of which contains a small, almost without convolutions, brain. The stomach is divided into several compartments and resembles the stomach of a ruminant animal. The spleen is located not on the left, as in other mammals, but on the right. The animal has a rather long and tortuous trachea, which provides extraordinary neck mobility. The liver is separated by the stomach from the abdominal wall.

Sloths give birth to one cub, which spends the first 4 months on the mother's belly. At 6 months, the baby, holding on to the mother, begins to eat foliage. By the age of 2.5 he becomes completely independent. Puberty occurs at 3 years. Life expectancy in nature is 10-20 years, in captivity, some animals live up to 40 years.

Basically, sloths feed on tree leaves, although they can, on occasion, eat an insect or small lizard. The leaves are difficult to digest and have a very low calorie and nutritional value. To digest plant fiber, sloths use symbiont bacteria that are part of the microflora of their digestive tract. Eaten leaves are digested in the stomach of a mammal for about 90 hours. In a well-fed sloth, ⅔ of body weight can be food in the stomach. All three-toed sloths in their natural habitat feed mainly on the leaves and flowers of cecropia, so keeping them in captivity is quite difficult.
