Louisiana congressman wanted to import hippos as livestock
In 1910 the U.S. faced a beef shortage, the media dubbed the problem "the meat issue." On March 24, 1910, Representative (later Senator) Robert Broussard of Louisiana introduced a bill to import hippos from Africa, which were to be settled in reservoirs in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. The hippos were to be not only a source of meat, but also the eradicators of water hyacinth, an invasive plant species that blocked streams and rivers in the South. Broussard's project, however, was rejected.

Hippos are so dangerous that Nile crocodiles try to stay away from them
Hippos are the deadliest mammals in Africa, even more dangerous to humans than lions or elephants. Their victims are often fishermen or boaters, whom they attack from underwater. Hippos capsize boats, trample and drag people into lakes, biting with incredible force. They can amputate limbs, break bones and damage soft tissue. In 2014, 13 people in Niger died when a hippo overturned their boat, and in 2018, a hippo attacked an American woman on safari in Zimbabwe after overturning her canoe. (She survived with a broken leg.)

Hippos are made for water
Their rounded bodies, large heads, and small feet make hippos look like submarines. They spend most of their time resting in lakes and rivers. At night, they go on land to eat grass and reeds. They create entire trails, making their way through the vegetation to their favorite spots. Hippos even mate and give birth while in the water

There are two species of hippopotamus
Both species belong to the hippopotamus family (Hippopotamidae), but they belong to different genera. The common hippo, or hippopotamus, is more common; it lives in the water bodies of Black Africa. The smaller pygmy hippopotamus, Choeropsis liberiensis, is an endangered species with a population of less than 2,500. Dwarf hippos live in the tropical forests of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire.

Today, the hippo is the most dangerous animal for humans in Africa. Although hippos are not predatory animals, they can kill or severely injure anyone with their teeth, and they do so (out of fear) more often than lions or other predators.

Hippos, huge mammals, spend most of their time in the water, where they hide from the sun during the day. After sunrise, they come out to forage for food (grass and other plants), but they feel restless.
