Even then, the habitat of the horse was small. In 1940, the area was reduced by half, and at the end of the twentieth century, horses of this species disappeared from the face of the earth. Przewalski's horses live in small family groups consisting of one to three mares, one adult stallion, and their common offspring.The offspring remain in the group until they become independent, which is usually when they reach two or three years of age. Single stallions, and sometimes older stallions, join bachelor groups.Family groups often join together to form a herd and then move all together.

These herd animals graze mainly in the morning or evening. Young stallions gather in bachelor groups, and small herds consisting of mares and foals are led by an adult stallion who chooses a watering hole or a pasture. During the day, the mares rest, and the stallion inspects the surroundings - with excellent eyesight, smell and hearing, Przewalski's horses warn the herd of danger. During sleep, the animals form a circle with their heads inward, and the foals are located in the middle.

The natural habitat for the Przewalski's horse is steppes and semi-deserts. The historical habitat of these animals stretched from Northwestern China and the southwestern part of Mongolia to Western Kazakhstan. By 1879, the range had shrunk to the hard-to-reach territory between the Mongolian Altai and the Eastern Tien Shan.

Looking at Przewalski's horse today, we can understand at least a little bit about the evolution of these beautiful noble animals. There are probably about 2000 of them in the world today. It is believed that these wild horses are a single lineage population originating from Dzungaria. This causes various problems in horse breeding. Close crossbreeding has a bad effect on the viability of the animals.

Przewalski's horse is the only existing subspecies of wild horses that have survived to this day in their original form. Their ancestors are the long-extinct tarpans and kulans. Today, these animals live in the protected steppes of Central Asia, in nature reserves, sanctuaries and various zoos almost all over the world.
