Ravenscourt male on a Summer canvas…

This legendary male continues to cover considerable distance and is not afraid to keep pushing and testing boundaries. His closest rival is the Euphorbia male, yet Ravenscourt refuses to give way to the younger male and is often seen moving through the heart of Euphorbias range.

Difficulties in the classification of ants are associated with two phenomena — the presence of twin species and hybrids[13]. There are quite a few species that are almost indistinguishable in appearance. Thus, a species described by the anatomical features of a small number of individuals is often divided into two or more independent, reproductively isolated from each other. They can be distinguished from each other by genetic or enzymatic features. Conversely, two closely related species of ants, which are easily distinguished by external features, often interbreed in places of common residence and give hybrid forms.

In 2008, a primitive blind species of ant Martialis heureka was discovered in Brazil, which has unique structural features, and it was allocated to a separate new subfamily of ants Martialinae[27][39]. Another example of a living fossil is the "dinosaur ant" Nothomyrmecia macrops from Australia. It was found in 1931, it was described in 1934, and again[40], despite numerous attempts and expeditions, it was found only in 1977[41]. At one time, it was even separated into an independent subfamily Nothomyrmeciinae[26][40][42].

The sizes of the representatives of the family are diverse — from 1 to 30–50 mm and more. The smallest ants include representatives of the genera Monomorium (working individuals 1–2 mm, females and males 3–4 mm)[16], Mycetophylax (1–3 mm) and Cyphomyrmex (1.5–3 mm) and the endemic species Leptothorax minutissimus USA, parasitizing in Leptothorax curvispinosus ant colonies[17] and reaching a length of up to 3 mm[18].

Ants are the most evolutionarily advanced family of insects[12] in terms of ethology, ecology and physiology[13][14]. Their colony families are complex social groups with a clear division of labor and developed systems of communication and self-organization that allow individuals to coordinate their actions in performing tasks that do not favor the individual. Some species of ants have a developed "language" and are able to convey complex information. In addition, many species of ants maintain highly developed symbiotic relationships with other insects, fungi, bacteria[15] and plants.

agree that they destroy many insect pests, ants still remain a dangerous neighbor for humans and pets. And the problem does not arise in their danger, but in everyone. From 5 to 10 million insects can live in one anthill, as this is a social type of insect.

The scale of the disaster with a large number of ants is visible only to those who are actively engaged in gardening and horticulture.
