The proximity to water has a direct impact on the cranes' physique. The closer they live to water bodies, the longer their beak, neck, and legs are, and their toes are wider apart - this helps them walk confidently on marshy ground and catch prey. In more "terrestrial" species that live farther from water, the situation is the opposite.

The rarest cranes in the world are the white cranes, also known as Siberian cranes. They are found only in the north of Russia, mainly in Yakutia, Komi, the Arkhangelsk region and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, and their number is only about 3000 individuals. And the isolated Western Siberian population of the Siberian Crane may now have disappeared completely - a few years ago there were only about 20 birds in the wild.

Zoologists believe that they originated as a species in North America and have since spread across our planet. By the way, it is strange that they have not mastered South America - the climate there is sometimes similar to the African one, and in Africa these birds feel great.

There is an ancient legend that says that one day a crane couple, very tired from the road, sat down on a dry tree, and at night lightning struck the tree and it caught fire. The birds were sound asleep, and the flames touched their feet, burning them badly. The creatures took off in terror, but one of them could not get out of the flames. Since then, none of the birds have landed on the tree, and their mournful cries can often be heard. Of course, one can argue about the veracity of the legend, but the fact that they do not sit on trees is a fact.
