Unlike their deer relatives, moose are reclusive and do not form herds. Despite their slow movements and good-natured disposition, moose can sometimes become very aggressive and move surprisingly fast if they are angry or frightened.

The elk is markedly different from other deer in appearance. This animal has a tall, hump-shaped withers, short body and neck, strongly elongated legs, a large, humpbacked head with a hanging fleshy upper lip, and a soft leathery growth ("earring") under the throat, reaching 25-40 cm.

In the wild, only wolves and bears are dangerous for elk, but even they do not always risk attacking an animal armed with horns and sharp hooves.

Moose are excellent swimmers, and can swim at speeds of up to 10 kilometers per hour - not bad for a creature with four legs. Moose can even dive and hold their breath for up to 30 seconds.

Moose have good hearing and smell, but poor eyesight: they cannot see a stationary person at a distance of ten meters.

Modern elk are divided into two species: the common elk and the American elk. The former is found in Ukraine, where its population has declined sharply, so on November 9, 2017, the elk was included in the country's Red Data Book by the decision of the National Commission for the Red Data Book of Ukraine after a proposal in May 2017.
