There are two primary types of vaccines for dogs: core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are recommended for all dogs due to the widespread prevalence and severity of the diseases they combat. They include vaccines targeting rabies, canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, and canine adenovirus (hepatitis). On the other hand, non-core vaccines are advised based on factors like a dog’s lifestyle, environment, and risk of exposure to specific pathogens. Examples encompass vaccines against Bordetella (kennel cough), Leptospira, Lyme disease, and canine influenza virus.

Parvovirus infection, commonly known as parvo, is a highly contagious viral illness that affects dogs, particularly puppies. Canine parvovirus (CPV) attacks the gastrointestinal tract, cardiac and immune system of affected animals, leading to symptoms such as severe vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), fever, lethargy, and dehydration. Parvovirus is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in dogs, especially in young puppies who haven't been fully vaccinated.

Early exploitation of animals for human use likely dates back 10,000 years. Some skeletons of domestic dogs (assumed to be pets ) date back to this period. There skull structure was quite different to that of wolves, which adds to the evidence that these were of the domestic variety. It is likely the dog adopted man, not the reverse.
