Cacao flowering is usually abundant with up to 120 000 flowers per tree each year. Flowering occurs mainly between January and June in West Africa then East Africa starts in December and April. At flowering stage you need to apply a lot organic liquid fertilizer.

Harvest at the Correct Time
Harvesting involves the removal of fully
mature and ripe cocoa pods from the trees,
and opening them up to extract the beans.
The main harvesting period usually lasts from
November to April.
Pods take 5 - 6 months to become fully
mature. The ripening pods change colour.
Green pods turn to yellow and red pods turn
orange. Maintain a regular harvest schedule
(every 2 - 4 weeks) to prevent losses from
pest and diseases.

THE PROPER SPACING FOR COCOA IN DIFFERENT METHODS

First method.
Traditionally cocoa used to be planted
12 ft by 12 ft or wider. Closer spacing results
in higher yields per acre or hectare.

Second method
Examples of close spacing are 6 ft by 6 ft or
8 ft by 8 ft. It would require higher levels
of management. Fewer weeds would be
present resulting in reduced cost for
controlling weeds.

Third method.
Currently the widest recommended
spacing is 10 ft by 10 ft. This allows for
intercropping with other plants like bananas,coffee and other fruit trees. Remember cocoa needs shades from other plants.

The intercrop should be managed in
such a manner that it does not affect cocoa crop.
12 ft by 12 ft spacing with weeds
10 ft by 10 ft spacing
6 f t by 6 ft spacing: 1200 seedlings per acre
8 f t by 8 ft spacing: 680 seedlings per acre
10 ft by 10 ft spacing: 430 seedlings per acre
