Here are the benefits;
a). You don't need academic papers to start.
No qualifications to start and manage. Anyone can start the farming and convert it to a business.

b). You don't require a license to start
Unlike other businesses which will require license certificates, chicken farming business can be started without it. Certificate will only be required maybe at the time you want to sell your products to the market after you have increased your business to a large scale chicken farming, and you will have enough time to do so.

c). Requires less capital to start and run
Unlike other businesses which will require large amounts of capital to start, chicken farming business only require a small capital. You therefore don't have to take high risks of taking loans or borrowing from friends and relatives.

d). You don't need a lot of pace to keep chicken
As compared to other livestock animals, say cows or sheep, chickens will only require a small space to build their structure and another small space to free range.

e). Continuous source of income
When well managed, chicken farming business will never allow your pockets to run dry. I will also teach you on how to comfortably manage this.

f). It's a source of employment
You first become your own boss and as the business thrives, you get to employ friends or relatives or children and so it becomes a boost to your family.

g). Gives quick returns on your initial investment
I do advise people especially the youth that the best place to invest your money is through businesses such as this. Where you don't have to wait for so long to start enjoying profits. Imagine starting this business today and start seeing great profits at 2 month... very possible. Keep in touch. I will teach you how.

h). Demand for chicken products increases each time.
Many people have developed a taste in chicken products and prefer them to other livestock

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT POULTRY FARMING:

First like the page , let's learn together 😊
There are a number of factors that anyone interested in commercial poultry farming should take into account. These include breeds, feeds, housing and disease management.
Poultry farming is increasingly becoming lucrative not only in Uganda, but globally. However, most of the literature about this enterprise tend to surround about the profitability side without tackling the how question.
This has attracted many to take on the enterprise by bandwagon, only to end up in losses.
In this article however, you will measure up whether taking on poultry farming is a worthwhile investment since it is more focused on the economics of rearing birds. How much you will spend on each bird daily and what are the expected returns?

Starting out:

You must start with the idea (business plan). Whether you have the money, you must first seek information. Plan carefully to comfortably manage a small or large farm.
Many farmers start rearing birds out of excitement, someone will buy chicks without adequate preparations because a neighbour’s flock is doing well. Poultry farming requires time and keen observation of the flock, and the owner has to be involved in the business.
Those intending to invest in poultry farming should hire a person with interest in farming and maintain the highest level of record keeping.
The hired person must record whatever is happening at the farm; also work out the security issue, for instance, the feeds, vaccines and eggs can be stolen by workers. Poor planning results in low quality products, poor marketing and inconsistent production.
Farming should be practiced as a business. If you target 5,000 birds because resources are available, still start small at least with 500 birds for consistency in production.
If they are layers, once they start laying, then it is time to stock another batch. Stocking in batches saves a farmer from suffering heavy losses in case of disease attacks.

Housing:

Stocking many chicks than the house can accommodate will definitely adversely affect the end results. Interior space should be adequate: 10 broilers per square metre and 6-7 layers per square metre.
The height of the house should be 9-10 feet (3 feet wall; 7 feet open vent). Inappropriate ventilation will affect the growth patterns of your birds.

Major costs excluding housing:

Broilers: Broilers bring in quick returns as they are ready for sale at six weeks. The market for broilers (chicken meat) is also ever available notably in supermarkets, restaurants and hotels especially if you can supply on a consistent basis. There is also potential for export.
From day one to three weeks, each chick will have consumed 1-1.5kgs of broiler start feeds. From four to seven weeks, each broiler will have consumed between 3-3.5kgs of broiler finisher. From week six when the birds weigh 2-2.4kgs, a farmer will start minting money. Other costs include brooding and vaccination expenses.

Layers: If you have money and looking for an investment avenue, then layers will make you smile all the way to the bank. However, you must be ready to inject in a lot more since they require huge start-up capital.
Layers feed on chick and duck mash for the first two months and within this period, each bird will consume at least 2kgs.
From two to five months, they feed on growers mash and within this period, a bird will consume at least 6kgs.
From production (when they start laying) at 20 weeks onwards, they are fed on layers mash. Once production falls below 60 per cent egg production, a farmer is advised to dispose them off.
Vaccination will include vaccines against diseases such as Newcastle, Infectious Bronchitis, Gumboro, Fowl pox, Fowl typhoid—given at different intervals as directed by a professional extension/veterinary officer.
On average, 500 birds will give you 14 trays per day for a period of 40 weeks. On average, well-looked-after layers will have a production capacity of 85 per cent, each bird will lay 300-320 eggs throughout the laying cycle.

Getting the best:

The quality and the quantity of feeds and water, stocking density, the quantity of drinkers and feeders and disease control strategies will greatly affect the laying capacity of the flock. One drinker will cater for 50 birds while one feeder will cater for 25 birds. Drinkers and feeders vary in designs and so do the prices.
Biosecurity measures (a set of measures designed to reduce disease incidence) for disease control are highly recommended, for example, clothes used in poultry farms should not leave that place.

Reducing costs:

Getting a good breed, sourcing quality feeds and the highest level of hygiene will keep your costs low. Medication always corrects mismanagement.
On mixing your own feeds, you must know what you are doing, you must pay particular attention to the purity of the materials you are putting together.
If the formula does not add up, you must look at the costs involved in acquiring the materials including transport, the particle size may be bigger than your chicks and they end up blocking the digestive system and you lose out. Farmers are advised to at least use factory feeds for the first four weeks.

Attention
Poultry farmers globally are facing a major challenge; drug use and abuse, which is dangerous to human health. Farmers tend to avoid cheaper preventive measures and opt for curative measures.
Farmers are failing with basic management (like vaccination, biosecurity etc) and end up using a lot of drugs which puts human health at greater risk. Drugs used for treating birds make human beings become resistant to drugs because of animal drug residues in their bodies.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE STARTING A POULTRY FARM:

1. Housing system:
This is a very important factor you need to put into consideration, no matter the number of birds you are keeping the housing can make or destroy your success in poultry farming.
If you have successfully worked on the housing system more than 40% of problems have been solved.I have met some farmers who have poorly constructed houses. Some poultry diseases are as a result of poor housing.Ensure that you source for the services of a good poultry house mason.Note that housing is the second most expensive of the poultry venture after feeds.

2. Feed and feeding:
You need to map out a feasibility studies on poultry farming before you kick-start anything this will go a long way to help you achieve your goals and succeed, feeds and feeding carries larger part of the expenses in a poultry farm and adequate plan towards feeding
can help make the journey easier. You can choose either to produce your own feeds yourself or buy various stages feeds from feed mills.Proper feeding makes the birds grow well and to a larger extend their health is secured.Making your own feeds can cut the cost of production by 50%.New farmers should not make their own feeds until they break -even.Remember feed making increases the cost of raw materials as you will have to buy machineries like feed grinder/hammer mill and feed mixer which are very expensive.Farmers with over 500 birds can make their own feeds as this will prove economical.

3. Record keeping:
this is another very important factor in poultry system management.A proper record keeping can foster your poultry business development, record keeping will help you determine your success and failures, flaws and where amendment is needed, keep a proper record for your poultry farm in order to increase your production level always. Some farmers don't even know how many birds they have or the mortality level in their flock.I have been to some farms where a farmer requests me to count the birds for him/her during vaccination or debeaking because of poor records.

4. Changes and differences:
You need to be sensitive to changes and differences in your poultry farm,
which includes the growth, feeding, their droppings, the laying capacities, number of birds, sound amongst others.
This will help you as a farmer to be sensitive to changes in the system. For instances: when layers are about to start laying, they makes a lot of noise, feeding rate and body weight increases, and sometimes when there is disease outbreak you can quickly take note of this happenings by their droppings,if it changes from what it use to be when they are healthy then something is wrong, you can call on your vet doctor for inspection.Be sensitive to regular changes in your poultry farm always.

5. Types of birds:
This is another important factor you should consider in a poultry farming business what are the types of birds you want to raise? Chicken? (Layers or Broilers as applicable to other birds) Turkey? Goose? Duck? You should source for quality chicks from breeders.First generation chicks f1 are the best.Only source chicks from reputable breeders.
6. Areas of concentration:

This is a very important factor to consider in a poultry farming business. Do you want to keep them for:Egg production, meat production, breeding (hatching of
eggs into chicks),feed processing and production, packaging of poultry products,
marketing and lots more?

7.Capital
capital is one of the major factor that determine what happens and what goes on in the system. Capital is the fund (total amount of money you are investing into a business)the main reason why poultry needs enough fund is that you can't be managing poultry birds you have to provide the best for them in order for you to get the required products at the end of your production.

8. Poultry Equipments and facilities: It is very important to get adequate equipment ready and set before starting a poultry farm so that you don't get stocked on the way. Some of the necessary equipments includes:
-Feeders,
-Drinkers,
-Egg trays
-Heat source,
-Waste disposal,
-Incubator,
-Culling cage/ Sick bay (for keeping sick birds),
-Clean water,
-Feeds,
and so on.

9. Poultry location:
Should be in a place the smell can not affect people living around them and disposal of waste is easy, actually you can run a poultry farm at home as well in your backyard but in a situation where you are considering thousands of birds, try and locate the house in an environment with less population of people and settlement so that you can run your business without any interference and disturbance.

When all the above factors are looked into then farmers in Uganda and Africa at large will be successful at farming. We will no longer take poultry farming as a hobby but as a serious venture just as real estate and other serious business. All I can say is that I wish you well in your farming ventures.

STEPS TO FOLLOW WHILE PLANTING CABBAGES

ƥ Soil analysis

For farmers planting a larger area, a soil analysis is certainly worthwhile. An analysis will show what nutrients are in the soil and what fertilisers are required. Irrespective of what this report says, you should apply nitrogen.

◾️If it is available, use cattle manure; it improves the structure of the soil, stimulates healthy growth, and provides macro- and micronutrients. Manure makes growing cabbages far easier. Apply 30 t/ha to 50 t/ha before preparing the soil. If no manure is available and you do not have a soil analysis to guide you, apply 600 kg/ha of 2:3:4 (24), broadcast it, and work it in.

ƥ Soil Preparation

The soil preparation used in producing cabbages does not have to be very fine. Spacing will depend on what size head you require; wider spacing will produce larger heads sooner. The general rule is to space rows 60 cm apart. The in-row spacing should be 35 cm—slightly further apart for larger heads, a bit closer for smaller heads.

◾️Most important are the amount of nitrogen you apply and the timing of its application. The best form of nitrogen for most vegetables is NPK.

◾️First application: Administer this a week after transplanting. Ensure that it is applied close to, but not touching, the plants. The most efficient method of administration is probably by hand; use one handful of NPK for every 12 plants. NPK can also be applied through a pipe tied into the corner of a fertiliser bag that is rolled halfway down; walk down the rows with the fertiliser flowing out of the pipe, near the plants. If using this method, apply between 150 kg/ha and 200 kg/ha.

◾️Second application: Administer this two weeks after the first application; it does not have to be sprinkled as closely to the plants. Apply 200 kg/ha to 250 kg/ha.

◾️Third application: For the third application, use 250 kg/ha, two weeks later in summer or three weeks
