*UNDERSTANDING POULTRY NUTRITION (1)*

NOTE: the best way to boost up feed utilization efficiency in poultry and all monogastric animals is by adding 1 kg of digest fast in every tonne of feed. Are your birds stunted, or not giving enough eggs? Are your animals not giving enough milk? Or the pigs are not growing as expected? DIGEST FAST is the answer. Go to joaca farmers world and ask for DIGEST FAST.

In response to several questions asked about identifying quality feeds for poultry and livestock in general, I shall commence a series that will attempt to unravel the basics of feeds and feeding.

INTRODUCTION

The importance of adequate, quality and balanced nutrition in the effective rearing of birds cannot be overstated.

Nutrition accounts for no less than 70% of total cost incurred during production .
Any error in this area will result in failure of any poultry Venture-- whether egg or meat production.

Your flock of birds are as healthy as the feed they consume.

A poorly formulated feed impedes growth and predispose to diseases.

A defective feed leads to poor tissue and organ development.
Stunted growth is a consequence of a shabby feed.

Decide for the best for your birds, they deserve it.

Vet aviana bring you Coccilip L, a water suloble treatment against blood diarrhea, black diarrhea, whitish diarrhea, brown diarrhea.
Coccilip is used in poultry, piggery and rabbits to treat against coccidiosis. Find Coccilip in all veterinary shops countrywide

*WATER QUALITY AND QUANTITY IN A POULTRY FARM.*

NB: LIPTOBAC L PLUS is a good solution to dirty water , rain water, reducing bacteria population in water, protecting birds from disease that may result from dirty water, improving animal health, improving production.

The amount of water taken by the birds should be twice the amount of feed eaten or thrice during hot seasons.

However, the quantity of water taken may be determined by the quality of water that we provide to the birds.

My recent visits to kapeeka farms, entebbe farms and isingiro have proved that birds take water depending of quality!

In kapeeka, we had an outbreak of collibacilosis disease. The water looks cloudy, from a very shallow well, when it rains this running water perlocates into the well. After pumping the water into the main tank that is outside in sun, the water turns black.

From this observation, it shows that the Nitrates found in the running water join the water well when it rains. A high load of Nitrates cause a reduction in performance of the birds. Bacteria that depend on nitrates turn the water black! After a day, this very water started smelling like rotten eggs!

Cloudy water is an indication that water has a lot of clay and organic matter in it which increases chances of bacteria survival in the water....and they eventually make the birds sick! The same issue happens in entebbe coupled with a lot blockages in ni***es and automatic drinkers.

Lesson: cloudy water contains a lot of organic matter and clay which blocks water pipes and cause high multiplication of disease causing bacteria.

We tested the pH of water in kapeeka and it was pH8. Such pH favours high multiplication of bacteria which will cause disease, the water had a bad taste and water consumption was low!

For long, we have been battling with collibacilosis, not knowing that water was the major cause! We have now decided to start applying an Acidifier in the water to reduce the pH to 6. We have recently observed that:
-water consumption has improved
-we nolonger have cases of diarrhea.
-black diarrhea has disappeared and the little cough that used to dist6is no more!
-egg production has just started going back to 82%.

To you who wants to copy the same, you must have a pH kit to control the amount of Acidifier (LIPTOBAC L PLUS) that you add to the water, because all water sources are not the same! So in some farms you may find that you need more acidifier to reach pH6 others you need less.

Recently, we picked water samples from a farm in Munyonyo from three different points ( reservoir, cistern and ni**le level) and were taken to makerere for testing. It was found out that there was a very high bacteria load in the water picked from ni**le level. In this farm we had treated with tetracycline 25%, 50%, tyrosine, gentylo.....but the infection kept on re-occuring.....
Supplements, vitamins, antibiotics etc that we use in water leave expedients in water pipes which become food for bacteria leading to higher multiplication of bacteria in the water pipes. During the process of multiplying, the bacteria product fats which attach on the pipes to form slurry, blocking the water pipes, ni***es and drinkers.

Using acidifiers like *LIPTOBAC L PLUS* in water reduces the burden of biofilm and slugs that build up into the water pipes and tanks, stops over multiplication of bacteria and some other effective acidifiers kill the bacteria by eating up their energy sources in the cell.

Much as you now understand that birds need acidic water, too much acidity will affect vaccines , drugs, and may corrode metallic parts of the water equipments.

I encourage you to pick water samples from different points and take them for testing atleast every 6 months just to be sure that your birds are taking good quality water.
However, some of the key factors to consider( using your eyes and nose) for water quality are:
1. colour ( water should not be turbid. You should be able to see through it when put in a transparent glass. It should not be cloudy or reddish or brown.
2. Taste. Water should be tasteless.
3. Smell. Water should not have any smell.

Another danger is having a water source surrounded by toilets or manure pits. Automatically you will have contaminated water.

In Isingiro, I found farm boys complaining that whenever they put soap in water for cleaning drinkers, the soap could just turn into spoilt milk, breaking the soap into small white particles seen in the water. Soap and water could not Foam!
The high level of magnesium and calcium caused this. Such Hard water reduces the effectiveness of disinfectants and soaps....and can cause blockage of water pipes hence reducing water intake and overall performance!

Poor quality water is very harmful! It can cause vomiting, profuse diarrhea mostly seen in cages , high disease challenges ( diarrhea, cough, flu) , reduced water consumption, poor growth rate.

Farmers should take the burden to know their water quality in details ie. Water pH (acidity and alkalinity of water), bacteria load in the water, mineral content in the water.

*If the water is contaminated with a lot of organic material, find another source of water.*
Also adding good acidifiers to water help to improve water quality since it alters the pH to a range of 6 to 6.5 which is mostly desired by poultry.

Acidification of water reduces the burden of biofilm and scales in water pipes, stops bacteria multiplication, improves efficacy of antibiotics , soaps and disinfectants.

KENBRO

Kenbro is a free-range bird that is robust to disease and possesses a well-rounded conformation. This birds can be used for sustainable or commercial farming for meat or eggs.

Kenbro if managed as a layer, starts producing at 25 weeks and can be managed as a free- range with minimum supplementary feeding and be ready for consumption/sale after 10 to 14 weeks. This bird is ideal for live market sales, and as a replacement for indigenous chicken.

It is important to note that this bird is not meant to replace the commercial broiler or layer as it will not attain the production levels of these specialized hybrids. This bird is more suitable for replacing the indigenous bird or for a farmer who would like to manage his/her flock with less intense inputs and have an organic product which has tastier meat.

**RAINY SEASON* 💦💦
is here to reduce on our water bills on the farms. Its such a blessing which we should embrace because any coin saved during this tough period maters a lot.

But we shouldn't forget to treat our rain water with *Liptobac L plus* *8* *MLS in 20 ltrs* because it will help to kill all the disease causing agents which might be spread in our rain water because of the contamination of our gutters, tanks plus atmosphere as well as stabilising the water PH.

This will improve on the health of your birds and control the spread of disease related to poor water quality such as collibacilos among others as well as protecting the digestive system of your birds hence improved digestibility and improved returns.

Agribusinesses especially Livestock farming is going through trying times.
The harsh effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and Ukraine-Russia war with their attendant economic toll did not spare the Agriculture sector.

Challenges currently bedevilling Agribusinesses include but not limited to:

1, High inflationary trend.

2. Increased loss of employment due to the downscaling of Farm activities.

3. Low purchasing power of consumers, leading to inappropriate/incongruent pricing of Farm products.

4. Unpredictability of the economy, making planning difficult.

5. Rising cost of inputs such as chicks, poultry feeds, drugs, fertilizers etc.

6. Shrinking market due to lockdown and restrictions.

7. Loss of man-hours due to actual health challenges or as a result of inactivity due to the enforced social distancing policy.

8. Incessant attacks of pest and diseases.

9. Multiple taxation and levies.

10. Theft or Pilfering.

Tools For Advancing Despite Challenges:

Many Farms have closed down and several others are operating at a loss.
Very few farmers are breaking even despite all odds.
The following are suggestions for stability in these perilous times:

1. Sound knowledge of the aspect of Agribusiness you're engaged in.

2. Constant training and retraining for effectiveness.

3. Economic wisdom for cost-saving.

4. Sound and profound understanding of how to navigate through tough times and seasons.

5. Negotiation skills.

6. Ability to network with other farmers.

7. Being law-abiding to promptly fulfil obligations to the government, contractors, suppliers and staff.

8. Optimizing your management practices.

9. Purchase inputs in bulk to help minimize the shock from the constant increase in cost.

You can Survive despite the challenges.

*SOME FARMING TIPS DURING THESE TOUGH TIMES IN FARMING* 😔.
Farming has turned out to be a stress factor during this period due to a drop in prices for poultry products such as eggs despite the fact that on the other hand agricultural inputs are high which makes books not to balance.
® Please as we approach this festive think about the security status of your farm since this is period when thieves start planning to reap where they never sowed, plan in advance to avoid tears.

®In this period when things are not moving on well make it a point to monitor the health conditions of your birds by checking for signs of any disease since treating a disease in it's early stages is way a bit cheaper compared to when it's in advanced stages,
All we want is avoiding high expenditures since incomes are low.

® Selling eggs at a bit lower price is way better than storing eggs waiting for prices to shoot and they end up going bad since most people don't have proper storage facilities.

® Strong biosecurity is now crucial around your farm to prevent any unwa ted problems that's why now strong disinfectant such as viruchoc should accompany you in this fight against diseases around your farm.

® However much things are tough don't let your birds miss out supplementation after certain activities such as deworming, vaccination among others.
You know such activities depress birds so much,so you need a reliever which will bring them back to moods with out delay which is Sangrovit.

By this terminology, I am referring to a Farm that is relatively calm, peaceful and whose owner's mind is at rest.

A farm with limited or no heavy disease burden or crisis.

A farm with teachable, pliable, responsible and easy to lead manpower.

A farm that is gradually but steadily moving towards goal realizations.

Success in any farm establishment has a lot to do with how serene the setting is.

Farm Owner or Visioner Perspective :

If a Farm must attain the serene status, a lot depends on the owner.

He must have palpable passion for the enterprise. This will keep him/her going in the face of daring and daunting challenges.

The Owner or visioner must do due diligence. This involves undertaking a thorough study into the business to understand all prospects and constraints.

Asking all necessary questions from experts and practicing farmers is a sine quanon to success. Call me or whatsapp me on 0788289811 , 0703617508

Read several books on the subject matter.

Visit successful Farms to interact with all concerned.

Be innovative!
2 years ago, I was called to check on a farm where birds were dying with broken eggs inside and broken legs.

I observed that at the time of adding fresh water in the drinkers, farm workers were throwing the drinkers and jerrycans towards the door! Injuring some birds

A lot spillage happens mostly in broiler houses when farm workers decide to change water or wash drinkers from inside the poultry house.

Be innovative

By Vet Charles Ssekatawa

*7 POULTRY RULES TO FOLLOW*

Vet Aviana services smc LTD cornerstone plaza rm AB77 kafumbe mukasa road.

Do you have passion for poultry and really wish to stay long in the business? Then, obey these rules!

Rule 1
.."Only order for birds you can conveniently take care of".
This is the most important rule of all.

Instead of stocking 500 birds and then struggle to feed them or give them medication, buy 200 ,feed and give them good medication.

Trust me, you'll make more profit than keeping 500 and struggling to feed and give the medication. If this happens, you'll battle with stunted growth, recurrent morbidity or disease outbreaks and high mortality.

Rule 2
.."Never borrow money to start poultry business unless you are an expert".

Of course, there is no expert in poultry business. In fact, we learn everyday. Every stock you take in will always teach you something different. However, Having learnt from all the different characteristics displayed by each stock, you get to know more and won't be excited when challenges come. You'll know how to handle them without much damage.

Rule 3.
.."Be vigilant".
The little things you don't take as anything matters.

If you want to succeed in poultry, you must take it as a real business. Do you know what a business man does every morning when he gets to his store? He pray, then open the store and go round to check if everything is in its place. He take stocks of what he met there and relate with his records yesterday before closing the store.

Don't just open your open your Poultry house and start rushing to give your birds feed and water and rush out again. Check around. Watch how they behave when you came in. Check what fell and what is no longer in its place

Rule 4
.."Never ignore warning signals".

Yes, I call them warning signals.
Bad smell
Withdrawal from feed
Moodiness
Withdrawal from water

There are numerous warning signals i can't mention here. In fact, they are so many

A farmer must know how his birds behaves when they see him enter the in the morning. How they behave when he serve them feed. He should know the very active terrors and gentle lambs

If you keep these signals, you'll easily spot when something is not right

Rule 5
.."Never change feed indiscriminately!"

I know you do this. Yes, you.😅

When farmers talk about changing feed from this to this and that then this all in the name getting better result, I'm always scared for them.

Whether you are changing from a bad feed to a good one, you must be very careful.

Do you know every change in feed affect your birds negatively first before gradually bringing in the results you desire? Most of the times, you may suffer withdrawal, coccidiosis, feed wastage, stress and more.

Imagine changing from mash to Pellet or vice versa indiscriminately. Do you know what that means? Have you studied the difference between mash and Pelleted feed and the process of digestion?

They may contain the same ingredients but the formulation process varies so is the digestion process.

Note:
I don't mean changing from starter to grower or finisher but changing from one commercial feed to another .e.g change from DUFAMIX to other brands....stick to DUFAMIX😁....If you know, you know👍🏿

DUTCH FARM INTERNATIONAL use their own unique ingredients to make their feeds although they may give the same nutritional content. Before using any feed for your birds, find out first about the feed and make sure you stick with it.

Rule 6
.."Never let your birds run dry of water".

Have you heard of heat stress? If it has happened to your birds then you'll understand what I'm saying.
Heat stress can wipe your entire flock. And it may leave your birds vulnerable to all kinds of infection as their immune system get weakened and may take more than 14 days to fully recover.
Your birds can survive 48 hours without feed but they can't survive 7 hours without water.
*Instead of running out of water, please, run out of feed.*

Rule 7
.." *If you can't drink that water, don't give it to your birds* ".

Some farmers takes chickens as they are just animals and nothing matters. Maybe they've forgotten they are dealing with delicate live animals.

Waterborne diseases are some of the deadliest disease and most difficult to control. Imagine a tiny drop of harmful substance inside the drinking water; it'll contaminate the whole water. If it was feed, it may not be that bad. Bacterial infections spread through drinking water like wild fire.

Please, if you can't drink that water, don't give it to your birds. I'm not talking about medicated water.

*☎️RING RING FARMER CALLING VET AVIANA☎️*

📞hello....

My birds have watery droppings

my production is not good 65% at 8months of laying

And my birds are vomiting (regurgitation)

Some are lame they can't walk and yet I put recommend calcium

Vet Aviana: 📞Answer

🌽When we have mycotoxins and aflatoxins there is what we call detoxification in the body system by the help of the liver and bile duct
The to toxins are deposited on the walls of the intestine there by covering microvilli that woul help in absorption
Hence reducing the nutrient absorption

And that's why you see watery droppings with undigested feed

Dehydration also comes in due to too much loss of water through watery droppings and regurgitation

This will also reduce the calcium intake in the long run

To correct this add at least 1kg of *Active D* per 1 tonne of mixed feed to help u clean the digestive system , this also improves on calcium metabolism and u can use *Active in feed incase of prolapse, cage layer fatigue and damaged eggs*

Ensure the bran ur using is dry enough and is not caked to reduce on aflatoxins

For those using automated water always clean the pipes with *Decagri* to breakdown biofilms which ends up being toxins in the body

Avoid water contamination and dumpnes in the poultry house.
farms should have these supplements for calcium metabolism of the birds, flue and cough break out , and to also get rid of the 🐀 rats

*Respir fresh* a solution to flue . It removes mucus / Decongests the respiratory system. Can be mixed with any other antibiotics in flue treatment.

*BRODIFACOUM PELLETS* are very effective at reducing rat population on farms , factories and homes.
Apply BRODIFACOUM pellets in all rat baits at the premises.

BRODIFACOUM PELLETS are available at JOSCA FARMERS WORLD BRANCHES, MILLENNIUM FARM SUPPLY WAKISO , A and R vet pharmacy, mulchick, agroserve mukono, farm care point and all other vet shops

*David Expert*
Vet Aviana services smc LTD

Brooding is the management of chicks from day old until they are 2 weeks. During this period the chick's THERMO-REGULATORY sytem would not have developed so they definately need TLC-"TENDER LOVING CARE"

FACTORS TO CONSIDER:-

-Have recommended stocking densities-10 birds per square metre. For birds 21 days +
-Provide feed ad lib
-Manage your temperatures 33-35°c initially
-Ensure good quality fresh air flow into the brooder and throughout the growing phase.
-Litter management- up to 10 cm depth for bedding and shud be turned regularly.

Follow the right supplementation.
On your farm you must have:
1. Viruchoc disinfectant
2. Hepalip the immune booster
3. SANGROVIT the weight booster.
4. Coccilip for preventing coccidiosis

You can access all these from JOSCA FARMERS WORLD CONTAINER VILLAGE, BWEYOGERERE, JINJA AND MASAKA

• There must not be any residual matter from previous flocks. Feed sacks, litter, feathers, etc must have been all removed.
• Prepare adequate heaters, drinkers, feeders, thermometers and lighting with intensity of 20 lux. JOSCA FARMERS WORLD has good equipment. They're at container village bweyogerere, masaka and Jinja. They're also the suppliers of kenchic chicks.
• Put up the side curtains at minimum ventilation (double curtains in winter) and false ceiling. You can use tarplins or black polyethene.
• Put litter/bedding evenly to a depth of 10cm and remove foreign objects e.g. wires, papers, nails etc.
• Apply disinfect on the litter. I said Viruchoc disinfectant is the best

A day before chick arrival:
------------------------------------
• Partition the brooder to place at an initial stocking density of 33 chicks per square metre.
• Preheat brooding area to 33 degrees Celsius for at least 24 hours.
• Feed and water (with LIPTOVIT MULTIADVIT) to be placed at least 6 hours before placement.

During the first 7-days:
--------------------------------
• On day 3, drop side curtains by 10cm from the top to create air vents, But not permanently....just for 2 hours and close back.
• Maintain a temperature of 32-33 degrees Celsius during the day and during the night.
• Mortality to be below 1%.
• Target an average weight of 177g on day 7 for broiler, and 120g for later chicks
• Encourage the chicks to move around and must be evenly spread out.

*DO’S AND DON’TS ON CHICK COLLECTION DAY*

Vet Aviana services smc LTD
Cornerstone plaza rm AB77 kafumbe mukasa road.

*Do’s:*
-----
• Clear your schedule for the day to concentrate on chick collection.

• Before leaving the shop, verify number of chicks and check for chick deformities.

• Ensure chicks are evenly distributed in compartments of the chick box to avoid suffocation and injuries.

• Transport the chicks in a stable mode with good ventilation.

• On arrival, take time to place chicks cautiously into the brooding area.

• After placement, take enough time to observe chick activity and assist struggling ones.

• Crop test and warm feet inspection to be done after 24 hours of placement.

*Don’ts:*
--------
• Don’t expose chicks to adverse weather conditions (sunlight, wind, rain) while in transit.

• Don’t close all windows of the motor vehicle. Leave a sizeable opening for ventilation.

• Don’t tilt the chick box. Place the chick box on a horizontal platform so that they can still move around inside.
