We have a certain way that we introduce dogs to each other. People sometimes question why we do this.
This explains not only why, it also explains what the body language you are seeing can mean.
Please keep this information in mind when introducing your dog to another dog. Give them the best chance possible to become friends. 😊

WHEN SECONDS COUNT

This post is not advocating that dogs meet every other dog, but about how to go about it, if and when it does happen, in a safer way.

The 3 second rule for dogs meeting each other is used as a guideline to help foster positive introductions, prevent either dog from feeling overwhelmed or trapped and prevent any potential reactivity and stress.

A short 3 second introduction is enough time to provide important information to both dogs.

Enough information for dogs to know – “are you a threat?”, “do I like you?”, “do I want to learn more about you?”, “do I really dislike you?”, “do I need you to go away?” etc. Both dogs may not feel the same way – one may not be happy to engage while the other may want to.

All interactions should ideally happen like this, not just initially. Just like us, dogs can have off days – things like pain, trigger stacking, lack of sleep or a host of other reasons can influence whether a dog wants to interact or not.

There are countless times I have witnessed meetings or introductions between dogs that have gone on just a few seconds too long and have not ended well. This can have long lasting effects on future behaviour when meeting other dogs.

Understanding body language is critically important. If we are going to share our lives with another species, protect them, advocate for them and help them feel safe, then we need to understand and respect their language.

The examples in this post of red and green flags are just a few general ones to look out for – there are many more and these will differ depending on the individual dog, context and circumstances.

Archie is needing a foster family! 💖🏠

Archie's BD 6/24/2020 and he comes in at a whopping 9 lbs. 😁

He is a very adorable, confident, friendly, and intelligent poodle. He was started in the house as a puppy.
He has since been in a kennel environment so he isn’t potty trained. We can use belly bands to help with house-training.

Good with dogs and probably cats.

Foster home needed to save his life!!

This guy is in a pound with employees who really don’t care what happens to the animals. They just euthanize for space. 😔
They barely give any information beyond the dog is friendly or not friendly. This older guy is deemed friendly. ❤️

His face (those eyes) is begging to get him out of there.😢We know it’s a big ask, but if you are in a position where you could foster this guy-please reach out to us. He would be eternally grateful! And you would save his life. 🐾🐾

We have two cuties that are looking for their forever families!

Piper (black and white) and Callie are around 14 weeks and have been around cats and dogs.

Their favorite pastimes include playing, using the litter box, eating, cuddling, and sleeping.

PUPDATE: Boris is with a new family and doing great!

Needs a fosterer now! PLEASE-he has nowhere to go. 😢😢😢 Adoption also available.

Located in Aberdeen,SD. Transport available.

Boris’s foster family cannot foster him any longer due to a change in family circumstances. NOT due to Boris at all.

We have no place for Boris to go!! He is a great dog. He is smart, trained with cues, housebroken, crate trained, and loves people (including kids) and other dogs! ❤️❤️

However, he prefers not to live with small animals. Small dogs are good though. 🐾

He’s an easy dog to have around. He would love a fenced in yard to romp in!

Meet Lil Sprout! He is looking for a family of his own. He is about 3 months if not a little younger.

He is quite a character! He has to know everything that you are doing because of course-he’s there to help. 😉 He will hold his own with other cats. He’s like a pestering little brother. 😁
He has been around dogs too. 🐱🐶

He is very entertaining to watch because you never know what he is hanging off of-or what other predicament he’s gotten himself into. He’s then exhausted and falls asleep purring in your lap like a little angel. 😏😴

Beautiful Foxie Roxie Cocoa Bean is up for adoption. The name is a long story. 🤷‍♀️

She was trapped and brought into rescue. She is a nice girl and walks on a leash. She is young and has been spayed and is utd on shots. She isn’t with any animals currently, but was caught on a farm with semi-feral cats. So she might do okay with another cat. Dogs are unknown.

Minature Poodle, about 12 lbs. DOB: 03/05/22

He is rocking his Mohawk. 😂 Rip is good with other dogs and kids.
However, he is shy around strangers and he hasn’t been in a house before- so he would probably appreciate older dog savvy kids.

Not sure on cats but he’s 12 lbs-so some cats will be bigger than him. 😉

This guy needs some affection and a place to feel safe.
