Skunks and Opossums were released on the perfect property the other evening. We want to thank the Reaugh family in Hawley for offering their 2000 acre ranch for our native wildlife. We appreciate the support! Their property offers the perfect habitat for our wild neighbors with multiple tanks and the Brazos River.

Our “Wildlife in Education” has been a huge hit. We would like to get to more schools this year but we can’t do this without your help. Our children are our future. We are planting the seed to educate our youth on respect and coexistence with our native wildlife. We have a big goal.

Searched for a skunk den this afternoon and the nest was quickly found. 3 babies have been rescued and taken to Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center where they are receiving care and groceries. After scoping under the feeder no other babies were found. We hope we got them all. We are not sure what happened to the mother skunk but the babies have been rescued. Team work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Contact us for issues with nuisance wildlife, wildlife in need of rehabilitation as we are partnered with Big Country Wildlife, and any other concerns. We are here to help you.

Due to their low body temperature, it’s just not common for a Virginia opossum to get rabies. Their body temp is too low to sustain the virus. But they play the part of “rabid” very well. They open their mouths wide to show their 50 teeth and even drool. This is one of their only defenses . Another defense or “offense” is playing dead. However, the opossum isn’t “playing” dead. It is an involuntary response to fear. They release an odor that smells like death in hopes the predator moves on. They are our only native marsupial! Virginia opossums are pretty cool animals.

More skunks received freedom today on this beautiful afternoon. The weather was perfect and these little ones are off to do what skunks do best.

Did you know that skunks rid your yard of unwanted pests and rodents? They enjoy mice, roaches, beetles, and even yellow jackets. They also enjoy small reptiles and snakes!

Enjoy our wildlife from a distance. Do not approach or try to pet wildlife. Do not provide food or shelter for wildlife. This will keep them from living to close for comfort. It’s not common for skunks to have rabies like we believe. In fact, it’s just over 20%. That’s it. Keep your pets current on vaccinations.

"If we can get people excited about animals, then by crikey, it makes it a heck of a lot easier to save them."
- Steve Irwin

September 4, 2006, 17 years ago we lost a legend in conservation.

I grew up watching this man share his love of wildlife with the world. He changed my life at a very young age and I am blessed to able to do what we do with the rescue and the Wildlife Rescue Team. I share my love of animals with the same excitement that he taught me. I've seen the power that passion can have on our wildlife, and I'm proud to say that we have partnered with the most passionate wildlife people in the big country to continue our mission. Together we are stronger, together we can change the world. I love what we do and I love that we get to carry on his legacy half way across the world. Many school trips on the schedule this year and we will be teaming up with Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center doing school events as well. Going to be a busy school year which wouldn't be possible without the support of our amazing community!

We released this beautiful porcupine today. He arrived for care at Big Country Wildlife after being found confused and weak. He was treated for heat exhaustion and after a week in care he is ready to return home in the wild as nature intended. This is so rewarding for all involved in the care and transport of these animals.

We picked up this young badger after he was spotted injured by a kind family in Mullin. They found him feeding on a dead deer and noticed him limping. They watched him for a few days & were able to trap the animal. We made the trip this morning to pick up and transfer to Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for medical care.

This young man is in the care at the rescue where he was found to have a fracture to his hind leg. You can follow his progress at Big Country Wildlife.

Partnerships as this ensure our native wildlife get the best medical care, rehabilitation, and release so when they are released back in the wild they are healthy and have the best start at life in the wild. All animals are vaccinated and treated for parasites. This is to decrease the chance of disease spread at release; but most importantly, gives the animals the best start. You won’t find that anywhere else.

For the best approach and care for our native wildlife- give us a call.

More skunks were released this evening and they did not waste any time sniffing and digging. They have the perfect environment and access to a pond. These skunks were vaccinated prior to release. As you can see in their coats, they are very healthy and ready for life in the wild. We certainly enjoy doing our part helping our native wildlife see freedom once more.

Let us know how we can help you with any wildlife concerns.

We released skunks this afternoon after they were raised at Big Country Wildlife Rescue. They were released on property that provides their natural habitat and access to water.

Skunks provide natural pest control as they eat unwanted pests like cockroaches, yellow jackets, grubs, and rodents. Skunks tend to mind their own business and prefer to stay away from humans.

We are a humane wildlife removal service partnered with Big Country Wildlife Rescue to ensure nuisance wildlife get medical care, quarantine, and vaccinations prior to release. We are also permitted with Big Country Wildlife to assist in rehabilitation of native wildlife. We have many years experience with wildlife rehabilitation of small mammals and reptiles.

If you need assistance with wildlife removal please contact us. Our top priority is to ensure public safety and also that the animal receives humane treatment, that the entire family is removed together, that no one is left behind or orphans created. If the animal needs care we transport to the wildlife rehabilitation center. To learn more about our services please message here or email us! We want to serve you and our native wildlife.

Two Texas wildlife rescue groups took to social media to call out the alleged actions of a mall manager that led to the cruel and preventable death of bats.

Let’s tackle the confusion between hares & rabbits.

We received a newborn jackrabbit (hare) in yesterday evening at 120g. A young hare is also called a leveret in its first year of life.

Unlike rabbits, who are born without fur and eyes closed, hares are born fully furred with eyes open. Hares can move on their own within an hour after birth!

The baby we received looks like a 4-6 week old eastern cottontail rabbit. Don’t let it’s large size fool you.. 😉
