Rugrat’s Story
One day, an ultrasound technician named Rachel was driving when she came across a deceased opossum. Knowing that this could be a mother with babies, she decided to check it out. While the pouch was empty, Rachel found a lone straggler under the mama’s armpit - a tiny, helpless rugrat.
Rachel knew exactly who to call and took the baby right up to Chadwell, where she handed him off to lead wildlife technician and licensed rehabber, Krystal. Having taken care of many babies before, Krystal knew that the vulnerable baby had a long road ahead of him if he was going to survive.
Throughout busy days and sleepless nights, Krystal saw this baby fight. And so she pushed on. After a while, the little guy began to open his eyes! Ever since then, he has not stopped being curious about the world around him.
Being that Rugrat was a single opossum being raised without siblings, we asked Irvine Nature Center if they were interested in a future ambassador animal. Due to him “imprinting” on humans, Irvine decided that he would be a great fit for them when he was old enough!
All of his aunts and uncles at Chadwell became the perfect things to climb on, lick, nibble, and play with every day. We learned he loves blueberries and hates face scratches.
While we already miss him terribly, we know he has an amazing home and an exciting adventure in store.
