Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know? Secretary birds have the longest legs of any bird of prey, and they must crouch to drink or feed. Their lower legs are covered in thick scales that protect them from bites when walking through brush or attacking prey.

☀️🐶 Hot Pet Summer? Let’s Keep It Safe 🐾💦

Summer heat is here, and while we love the sunshine, it can be dangerous for our furry friends. Here are a few ways to help keep your pet cool, comfortable, and safe:

💧 Hydration is everything
Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, cool water—especially after play or walks.

🔥 Check the pavement
If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Walk your dog in the early morning or evening when the ground is cooler.

🥵 Know the signs of heatstroke
Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, red gums, vomiting, or collapsing are signs your pet may be overheating. Seek immediate veterinary care.

🚶‍♀️ Adjust your walk schedule
Avoid mid-day walks or playtime. Choose shaded areas and avoid overexertion, especially for flat-faced breeds or senior pets.

🌬️ Fans, frozen treats, cooling mats, and shaded spots can go a long way in helping your pet beat the heat.

If you’re ever unsure whether the weather is too hot for your pet, play it safe and stay cool indoors. 🏡

With the next few days looking to head to the top of the thermometer...it's crucial to pay attention to your pet's well-being. Extreme hot weather can be deadly for pets ( any species or size), and prevention is key. Take this opportunity to reach out to your neighbors to lend a hand if needed, and make sure everyone stays cool and comfortable this week!

🌟 Patient Spotlight: Layla 🌟

Meet Layla, one of the bravest pups we’ve had the honor of caring for. 💛

Layla was diagnosed with lymphoma on September 28, 2024, and began her chemotherapy journey just a few weeks later on October 15, 2024. Since then, she’s been visiting us bi-weekly—not only for her treatments, but also for overnight boarding with our team, as her mom works late nights in healthcare.

Though Layla had to come in for many visits with us, she still wags her tail every time she walks through our doors! 🐶💕

Throughout her journey, Layla was lucky to have a dedicated veterinary technician, Taylor, who sought her out every time she came into the hospital to oversee her care. Taylor made sure Layla was as comfortable and loved as possible during each visit. 💚

Layla completed her final chemo treatment on June 3, 2025, and we couldn’t be prouder of her strength and resilience. 💪🐾

Her story is a beautiful reminder of the bond between patients and their care team, and the unwavering love from families like hers.

This Turtle Tuesday, we have a very special story to share.

A good samaritan came across a musk turtle on her property and, concerned about something on his shell, brought him into us. A couple of our technicians thought the little guy looked familiar…and sure enough, we concluded that it was our old friend, Onion, a turtle we treated and released last season! When we assured the finder that what was on his shell was epoxy (that would eventually work its way off), she happily agreed to re-release him back in a stream near where she found him. We can’t normally say that we’re able to get updates on our released wildlife, so being able to see that this spunky turtle is doing well was a very special moment for us.

We wish Onion the best of luck on his journey in the wild!

We’ve got a super cool guest to highlight for Wildlife Wednesday!
This Baltimore Oriole was brought into us with a wing injury. He’s currently doing great and enjoying plenty of berries, oranges, and seeds. While this is the state bird of Maryland, they’re not super common around here, so he’s been an exciting patient for us.

Let’s go O’s!

🐾A Kind Reminder About Wildlife Drop-Offs!🐾

At Chadwell Animal Hospital, we’re proud to help local wildlife in need—but we kindly ask that any wild animals brought to us be truly injured or orphaned.

Every spring and summer, we see an increase in well-meaning people bringing in baby animals they found in their yard. While we know your heart is in the right place, many of these babies are actually healthy and still being cared for by their parents—who may just be out gathering food or watching from a distance.

Unfortunately, removing them from their environment can cause more harm than good. If you’re ever unsure whether an animal truly needs help, please call us or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator first. We’re happy to guide you through what to look for.

Together, we can make sure every wild creature gets the right kind of help, at the right time.

Thank you for your compassion and continued support!
