So I want to share a very UNIQUE situation that’s associated with breeding. My mare was ultrasounded by vet on day 17 for pregnancy check. She was confirmed in foal with 1 fetus. At day 33, vet was back out for heartbeat check. Vet confirmed at this appointment that there were 2 viable heartbeats. My mares follicle had split into 2 sometime between day 17-33. Therefore she is carrying IDENTICAL twins. The fetuses are sharing one external chorionic membrane and have separate anmiotic sacs. Twin reduction is not an option under this circumstance. Due to the poor prognosis/outcome of both babies and mom we had to make the sad decision to terminate her preganancy. 🥲
