Let’s talk emergencies!

Did you know emergencies start at upwards of $500 for your pet? This could include 1st visit colic call, walking in the door at a hospital for diagnostics, or the laceration repair because only god knows what your pet cut themselves on. This is just the start!

What if your dog needs surgery? What if your horse needs to be transported to the hospital? Are you prepared to pay for that upfront right now?

Just to give you an idea:
- Hospitalizing a horse, dog or cat can range from $1,000-$5,000 and just go up from there
- Colic surgery can range from $5,000-$10,000

Did you know the majority of vets take payment PRIOR to rendering services? Most veterinary facilities do not offer payment plans. This means you have to come up with the money to get treatment for your pets.

So you may ask, what options do I have?

The first option is Pet insurance!
Having health insurance for your pet, just like you, could be the answer for your unexpected vet bills. There is lots of pet insurance companies out there so be sure to do your research to pick the one that’s right for you and your furbaby!

Don’t feel like pet insurance is right for you? Well other things to consider could be carecredit , scratchpay, or an emergency credit card just for your pet. These options allow you to pay off your vet bill over time.

In summary, emergencies happen and the best solution is to have a plan in place for when they do.

Let’s talk animal transport! Moving animals from state to state or even internationally can be a stressful process. There can be many steps and many requirements. If you are planning on traveling with your pet, the best place to go for resources is the USDA APHIS Pet and CDFA Livestock Travel Website.

More than likely when traveling with your animal you will require a certified veterinary inspection (CVI), also know as a health certificate. A CVI is an official document often needed in the transportation of animals. Health certificates are a way to try and prevent the spread of disease. It is proof that a veterinarian has examined the animal and were found to satisfy the regulations pertaining to their intended movement. To sign health certificates veterinarians must have a special accreditation through the USDA, along with their veterinary license. After your accredited veterinarian signs the health certificate it is typically valid for 30 days. Once a CVI is created and signed, it is sent to the USDA office for review and approval, so it can not be edited or changed. Lastly, an exam is required by law before issuing a health certificate.

If you are planning on traveling with your animal it is important to plan ahead in order to get all the documentation and testing needed done. If you have questions, contact your veterinarian on the steps you need to take.

Hi I’m Dr Alanna Layton! I am the solo veterinarian and owner of Layton Ranch Veterinary Services. I graduated from Western University of Health Sciences in 2021 with my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. I currently practice mixed animal medicine and service Acton, Palmdale, Santa Clarita, Lancaster and surrounding areas. I see large animal appointments and make ranch calls Monday through Wednesday. Thursday through Saturday I work as a small animal veterinarian at Animal Medical Center AV. My interest lies in general practice, preventative medicine and is expanding daily. Outside of work you can find me riding my own horses, managing a local gymkhana club, cuddling my dogs, or enjoying the lake.
