The stay challenge at the end of class on Monday was a little different. The dogs practiced stay with their front paws on obstacles followed by only back paws. This is not easy! Amazing work everyone ⭐.

That was way too much fun!

The scent dogs know what they are doing around here. Can you believe they had to find the target odors while ignoring pieces of hotdog? 🌭 That was tonight's distraction challenge.

The "Intro to Scent" workshop was also a success. Lily passed her scent test to move into scent league. Congratulations 🎉

Happy Saturday!

We have a few puppy class success tips this morning to help you prepare.

Bring a toy and your pup's kibble:

While a few treats are fine, you can also use regular kibble early on. Make the food more interesting by dropping a few high value treats in the same bag you are bringing the food in.

A great training toy is usually not the kind with stuffing. A ball on a rope or tug works well, but bring whatever you have available. You should bring at least one toy, but it is even better if you bring two.

Work at your own level:

While we train as a group, you should adjust the skills to match the training level of your puppy. For example, if you find your pup is not quite ready for a one-minute stay, release with "break," after 10 seconds instead of waiting for a mistake.

Don't rely on the leash:

More on what this means will be discussed today, but think about this, if you are unaware of when you are using a tight leash or guiding your dog with the leash, you are going to struggle to train for a very relaxed leash. We want to train puppies to understand what it means when they reach the end of the leash and that involves the handler skill of being aware and soft on the leash.

Have fun:

Puppy training is fun! Don't forget to enjoy this time with your puppy as it is such a short window. You are making memories with your puppy and bonding. 🐕

Thanksgiving Week Obedience Run-Thrus 🍁

We have a busy week ahead as we gear up for Thanksgiving! Before taking Thursday off to spend time with family, join us for Obedience Run-Thrus tomorrow night.

Returning Participants: No need to pre-register. Simply arrive around 5:00 PM to reserve your spot.

First-Timers: If this is your first run-thru, please complete the entry form on our website: mjspettrainingacademy.com under Competition Obedience.

Who Can Join?
All skill levels are welcome! Whether you're a seasoned competitor or trying something new, this is the perfect opportunity to test your dog’s skills in a supportive environment. We especially encourage those in regular training classes to participate. Pat will be there to guide you every step of the way.

Cost:

$10 for the first run (pay at registration when you arrive)

$5 for additional runs

We’ll provide the ring, judge, and jumps—you bring your dog and anything else you need!
