Winter is coming, and it's harder on skinny pigs than fuzzy ones! Make sure your skinnies have plenty of bedding, warm hideys, and are kept out of drafty or damp areas. They also burn more calories than usual trying to make heat in cooler temps, so making sure they always have access to high-quality hay, feed, and water in winter is more critical than ever!

I am heartbroken to announce that today I had to make the hard decision to have baby Maple humanely euthanized. Last weekend she sustained a broken leg while playing in her cage, and while it was a clean break and I tried to make sure she had the medical care and rest she needed to try to heal, today she was in such excruciating pain that it wasn't fair to ask her to hold on any longer.

She was given a sedative first and slipped away peacefully in my arms, and when we got home I buried her beside her auntie Sigyn.

I'm sorry we only got to know each other for such a short time, baby girl, but I'm so glad to have met you anyway. You were so sweet, and I know your brother, mother, and grandmother all miss you. But now you'll have no more pain, and a whole group of friends waiting to greet you on the other side.

Rest easy, Maple Seed. Until we meet again. 💔🐹🌈

Today I had to say a sudden and unexpected farewell to my very favorite piggie, ChillyPigs Mistress of Mischief, "Sigyn."

Sigyn, a.k.a. "Sigyn the Pigyn," was a female skinny pig who came to live with me on March 15, 2022, and the one who jumpstarted everything here at ChillyPigs. She was owned by a coworker who no longer wanted her, said she was ugly, and was considering abandoning her out in the country. Obviously I couldn't let that happen, so I took her in.

She had been been living alone, which is never good for a cavy, so I got her adopted sister Freya from the local pet shop the same day so she would have a friend. She and Freya were BFFs, and even co-parented each other's babies when their litters were born last year. To this day, Freya and her daughter and grandchildren would spend time cuddling with "Auntie Sigyn," who was always happy to use them as free space heaters.

Due to her origins and my love of Norse mythology, I decided to name Sigyn after the wife of the trickster-god Loki, who is a god of outcasts, the misunderstood, and the unloved (and, of course, mischief).

Sigyn was a very well-adjusted cavy. She was extremely talkative and curious, always chattering at me when I was anywhere near the cage (or the fridge), and was an absolute chow hound. She never found a fruit or veggie she didn't like, and was sure to let me know if I was running late for veggie time! She loved cuddling up with me in a warm blanket, and would even watch the television when I put on a movie or played games. She had so much personality in such a small package, everyone who met her loved her instantly.

I'll never know exactly what took her, whether it was a sudden cardiac event, stroke, or some other cause, but last night she was standing up in the cage and wheeking for dinner as usual, and this morning when I returned from work she was already gone. Whatever it was, I'm so, so thankful she didn't have to suffer.

Sigyn is survived by her four pups from her one and only litter: 2 sons named Thor and Calvin, and 2 daughters named Cinnamon and Blaze. They are all beloved by their new families, and I hope they get to live as full and joyful a life as their mother did.

Goodbye for now, my little Sig-Pig. I'll pray that Loki and even Sigyn herself watch over you on the other side of the Bridge, until we see each other again.

Today was pig-ture day for the last 2 pairs of peegs still awaiting their new homes! (Both pairs are reserved, the babies just aren't old enough to leave for 3 more weeks.)

Oak and Maple (the 2 Midnight x Valkyrie babies) are growing like weeds and getting some funky hair! Tater is getting along well with his new baby cagemate, and Valkyrie is loving the one-on-one girls' time with her daughter. 😊

It's a bittersweet day here at the caviary as we welcome the last ChillyPigs litter for a long time to come.

There are 2 babies - 1 girl, 1 boy - out of the planned litter between "Midnight" (FFF Midnight Magic) and "Valkyrie" (ChillyPigs Ride of the Valkyries).

The girl will be called "Maple," and the boy is "Oak." Mom and babies are all doing well, and both babies will be available for adoption to loving pet homes at 8 weeks of age. Welcome to the family, little beans! 😊

This isn't a post I'm excited to make, but unfortunately due to some recent health issues I'm needing to do a temporary clear-out of my caviary. I plan to pick up breeding again someday, and hopefully begin showing then too, but for now I need to take a hiatus to resolve my health complications.

As a result, the following piggies will be available for placement into pet homes. There will be a small adoption fee to ensure these babies end up in quality homes.

* Thor (11 months) and Tater (6 months) are a bonded pair of half-brothers and would do best if adopted together.
* Cinder (16 months) and Spicy (18 months) are bonded half-sisters and would do best adopted together.
* Fuego (22 months) would do best as a single piggy, as he does not get along with other males.
* Midnight (17 months) would also do best as a single piggy, as he doesn't like other males.
