12 Days of Drafts! Day 6: Haflingers
Haflingers originated from wild mountain ponies roaming in the southern Austrian Alps over 500 years ago. The modern Haflinger breed is said to have been born a century and half ago when a half Arabian stallion was crossed with some Haflinger mares. One of the colts from that cross, named Folie, became the foundation for the modern breed today.
While they are considered ponies by most equine enthusiasts, many representatives of the breed are over the 14-hand mark where a pony becomes a horse. Certainly, they do not consider themselves diminutive. Haflingers are known for their sure-footedness, strength, hardiness and easy-keeping nature.
In the photo here, Jim Buzzard drives his four-up of Haflingers at the Brush Creek Plow Day in Melber, Ky., in 2023. Jim usually drove six but had recently lost one of his mares. He spent most summer weekends at one plowing event or another in the midwest.
For many teamsters, the Haflinger makes good sense. They are shorter so easier to collar and harness. And because they are smaller, a logger or farmer has more flexibility to use, one, two, three, four or more in a hitch. And since Haflingers are such easy keepers, like the Norwegian Fjords we will discuss later, they get along on less forage than their bigger counterparts do.
Haflingers are sometimes crossed with Belgians to produce a work horse sized somewhere between each parent.
Today there are two distinct types of Haflingers, with many individuals falling somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. The drafty type of Haflinger looks more like an old sytle Belgian built at 75 percent scale. They have the muscle and conformation for working in the field or woods. The sporty type Haflinger is much more refined and lighter b***d. They excel under saddle and in light carriege driving situations. Both types are known to be smart, willing to work and quick to learn. For more information about Haflingers, visit https://haflingerregistry.com
