Attention poultry owners:

Officials with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) have detected a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in the state.

In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NDA confirmed an instance of HPAI within a commercial broiler farm situated in Gage County, Nebraska.

“Nebraska hasn’t had any reported cases of HPAI for a few months so while we are disappointed, we are not surprised, to see another case, as there have been several confirmed HPAI cases in surrounding states,” said State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley. “Poultry producers need to continue to be vigilant in protecting their flocks. It’s important for producers to know the signs and symptoms of HPAI and to continue to practice good biosecurity measures to help prevent the spread of this disease into their flocks.”

HPAI is a highly contagious virus transmitted easily among birds via nasal and ocular secretions, as well as f***l matter.

Transmission avenues include contact with infected poultry, wild bird exposure, contaminated equipment, and even inadvertent carriage by caretakers on clothing and footwear. While wild birds can carry the virus asymptomatically, domesticated birds often exhibit severe illness and mortality rates.

There were 102,000 birds affected in Gage County, according to data published by USDA.

For many of us, pets are loved ones on scale with some of the most important people in our lives – when they often die before us, it’s not an easy loss. We’re not alone in remembering some of our favorite pets for the rest of our lives ❤️

September is Animal Pain Awareness month. Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Pain comes in many forms: surgical pain, arthritis and cancer related pain, just to name a few. Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle, and masked as “getting old” or “slowing down.” Old age is not a disease, but pain is. There are many options to treat the various causes of pain in animals including pain medications, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, laser therapy, and therapeutic massage. Schedule an appointment to talk to one of our vets about pain relief options for your pet. 402-988-2222

The holiday season is almost here and the 4th of July means… Fireworks! 🧨🎇
Are you Interested in medication options to manage your dog's anxiety around fireworks?
Check with your vet NOW before the holiday weekend about medication options!
For most dogs with moderate or severe storm phobia, anti-anxiety medication is essential to manage the dog safely. The only person legally permitted to prescribe medication is a veterinarian.
A few ways to decide if you should check with your vet:
1. Does your pet stress during even minor storms or events?
2. Does that stress ever manifest as more than hiding behavior?
3. Is their behavior worsening with each progressive storm or firework season?
4. Do they ever hurt themselves or others while exhibiting symptoms of these related events of anxiety?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above – particularly to number 4! – meds might be in order.
Fearful dogs often display these symptoms: Panting; pacing; whining; salivating; trembling; urination and defecation (including diarrhea) in the house; digging and clawing at floors and walls; chewing household objects, woodwork or walls; attempts to hide or escape (which may include digging and chewing); running away if escape occurs; attempts to stay near a family member, and redirected aggression to other household pets or family members.
💥Please note we are not suggesting medication should be used for all dogs but are just offering tips and suggestions for those considering medications.💥
Many owners find that behavior modifications and desensitization can address most if not all of their dog's fear related anxieties.

Big changes are going on in the animal world! Pharmaceutically speaking, that is. Due to concerns of antimicrobial resistance, it is now required to have a prescription for drugs that were previously available over the counter. This will primarily affect owners of food-producing animals, and companion animals to a lesser extent. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? Your animals or herd will need to be seen by a veterinarian at least once yearly to maintain a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). Establishing a VCPR generally requires, among other things, that the veterinarian has become familiar with the management of the animals on a given farm or ranch by examining the animals and/or visiting the facility where the animals are managed.

For more information, please visit the FDAs website at https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/antimicrobial-resistance/gfi-263-frequently-asked-questions-farmers-and-ranchers for more information.

FDA addresses frequently asked questions from farmers and ranchers who may be affected by the changes recommended in Guidance for Industry (GFI) #263.
